Drug quiz Question: Have any long-term studies been conducted to determine whether a link exists between early use of tobacco and alcohol and later use of illicit drugs? Answer: A 13-year study of 10th and 11th graders, which began in 1971, finds teenagers who drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes are more likely than non-drinkers and non-smokers to use illicit drugs later in life. Dr. Denise Kandel of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons interviewed more than 1,600 high school students in New York. Over 81 percent of participants were tracked down and questioned nine years later. The study concludes: “Illicit drug use generally begins with using a legal drug, tobacco or alcohol, and progresses on to use marijuana. Marijuana then serves as an entry to drug abuse for many people.”
