Zoa Metcalf: She'll be 100 years young July 27
By JIM BRODERICK Staff Writer On July 27, Zoa Metcalf will hear “Happy Birthday to You” for the 100th time. Mrs. Metcalf, longtime resident of the Lakeland area, will hear the congratulations of her son, Bill; her two grandsons, Doug and Phil; and her six great-grandchildren as she achieves this milestone. Born in 1885, Mrs. Metcalf has spent the better part of her life in Kosciusko County, interrupted only by her marriage and career as a legal stenographer in Illinois. M Profile Mrs. Metcalf said she moved out of the area whdtf she was 13, a move made more out of necessity than anything else. “My stepfather was a railroad man,” she said. “We had to move when he did.” The family relocated in Illinois, giving Mrs. Metcalf the opportunity to pursue an education at a business college in Chicago. She then became a legal stenographer, a job which she held until her return to the Lakekand area in 1932. While living in Illinois, she married a farmer and moved to Momence. In 1932, the pair moved back to the region where Mrs. Metcalf was born and raised. “I love this area,” she said. “I like being around water.” , , When her husband died in 1951, she went to work for three years at the hospital in Warsaw. Since then, she has slipped into a relatively quiet lifestyle, reminiscent of her younger days. “People didn’t used to be so tense,” she says, referring to the first half of this century. “Now,

everybody’s ready to jump. Nobody takes the time to visit their neighbors. ’ ’ Mrs. Metcalf says the neighbors she used to know are not around anymore. “I used to know quite a few people around here,” she said. “Not too many now. I’ve outlived just about every one of them.” Although at a loss to explain her longevity, Mrs. Metcalf thinks it might be due to her upbringing. “We didn’t have TV, or cars, or telephones,” she explains. “I was a walker. Anywhere we wanted to go, we had to walk.” She admits, however, that times have made it impossible to continue that trend. “There’s a lot more crime today. It’s really not safe to walk the streets. I wouldn’t walk today, even if I could.” What she does occupy her time with are such things as television, “even though I don’t see too good anymore,” and talking books, which are put out by the government. “I still putter around in the kitchen,” she said. “I cook all of my own meals.” Although she uses a walker to help her around the house, Mrs. Metcalf remains quite mobile, insisting that she is still able to take care of herself. “I can still do a lot of things. When I can’t take care of myself, then I don’t think I want to live any longer.” Except for a few other health problems, Mrs. Metcalf claims she’s getting along well. “If I could hear good, and see good, I’d be doing OK,” she said. j Lunetta Metcalf, her daughter-in-law, offers assistance whenever the elder Mrs. Metcalf needs help. “I don’t know what I’d do without her,” said Mrs. Metcalf. “She really helps me a lot.” Mrs. Metcalf will be celebrating her birthday in the presence of her family and friends at the First Baptist Church of Oswego. Plans include a small celebration, complete with birthday cake, and al dedicatory mass. “I’m looking forward to it,” said Mrs. Metcalf. “Now all I have to do is make sure I live long enough to be there.”
