Wowosee netters edged by Warsaw 3-2
By CHRIS CAULEY The Wawasee girls’ tennis team struck out again last Thursday, but there may be some hope in Mudville. The Lady Warriors’ 3-2 defeat at the hands of Warsaw stretched the Wawasee losing streak to seven matches. On the bright side, the final 3-2 verdict was the closest the Warriors had come to winning in any of those seven matches. Five of the seven losses, including the Warsaw match, were against opponents from the Northern Lakes Conference. The Warriors, 2-7 overall after the Warsaw match, got zipped by 5-0 in their first three conference matches. Then they lost by 4-1 to North Wood on Tuesday, April 30, and then they won two individual matches against Warsaw two days after that. “They are becoming more aggressive,” Coach Cindy Peterson noted. “They’re not as afraid to go to the net. Jennifer (Tuttle) especially is starting to go to the net, and that’s where you win your games. If you don’t go to the net, you’re going to sit back and play tennis until somebody makes an error, and that’s boring.” Tuttle’s match at No. 1 singles was anything but boring, especially in a close second set. A sophomore, Tuttle took the first set from Kelly Poyser, 6-2,"'but had to go the distance in'the second set before winning by 7-6 on a 7-5 tiebreaker. The Warriors’ other win came at No. 2 singles where junior Kelly Rensberger outlasted Warsaw junior Marlene Messner. Rensberger lost the first set, 6-3,

but won the second set by 6-3 and the third set by 6-4. “Jennifer played exceptionally well her first set,” Peterson said. “Her second set she started to panic a little bit toward the end, but she hung in there. Kelly played an exceptional match all the way through. They both needed the wins. I’m pleased.” Tuttle and Rensberger were the last Warrior players off the court. The other three varsity matches were all concluded in short order, but none of them to the Warriors’ liking. Warsaw won both doubles matches and the match at 3 singles in straight sets. Good Match For Tuttle After breezing through a 6-2 first set, Tuttle jumped ahead in the second set at 1 singles, 5-3, before her shots suddenly started to go awry. Warsaw’s Kelly Poyser battled back to tie the set at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. Poyser led early in the best-of-12 playoff before Tuttle regained her stroke to finally win, 7-5. “I had excellent placement today,” Tuttle said afterwards. “My cross-court placement and my lobs were good. I played much better Tuesday against North Wood when I lost and should have won, but I played pretty well today. “We were pretty even,” the sophomore added. “She had a stronger serve, but they’ weren’t going in. What I mainly did in the first set was let her make the mistakes. I just kept hitting the ball back at her. Then in the second set, I started making mistakes. Hitting them in the net and hitting them long, both. Lisa Hunter, the only senior on the Wawasee team, saw her string of bad luck continue as she

lost at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Her opponent was Warsaw sophomore Michelle Haines, who hiked her record to 5-1 by beating Hunter. “She was consistent,” Hunter said. “She didn’t make too many errors. I tried to play aggressive, but I got too aggressive.” Both Doubles Lose The Warriors’ doubles teams did not fare any better. Shawn Anderson and Christie Carmichael lost in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores, and Lisa Noble and Kay Stackhouse dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision at 2 doubles. “They (Warsaw) have two good doubles teams,” Cindy Peterson said. “They gave us a rough time. They killed us at the net.” Warsaw’s No. 2 doubles team had two seniors, Lara Lemon and Rhonda Robinson, who were playing together for the first time. Robinson had been a singles player earlier in the season. “She had great spins on her serves,” said Lisa Noble, one half of Wawasee’s 2 doubles team. “They played really well,” Noble added. “I thought we played well for the first time playing together.” The Warriors’ 2 doubles team usually has Cristi Weaver teamed with either Noble or Stackhouse, who alternate between doubles and playing JV. Thursday’s match was the first time Noble and Stackhouse had teamed together. “I wanted Kay and Lisa to play together just 4n case something would happen and they’d have to play together,” Peterson said. “I don’t know if that may have messed them up. Those two never played side-by-side. They’ve always had Cristi as that stabilizer. “The other two (Anderson and Carmichael at 1 doubles), I don’t know what their problem was,” the coach added. “They just couldn’t put it together.”
