Wawasee golfers off to rousing start
By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor The Wawasee Warriors’ 1985 golf team has a tough act to follow. Their predecessors finished sixth at the state meet last spring and 17th at state the year before. “Last year’s team was the best I’vp had,” said Rudy Cesco, who’s coached Wawasee boys’ golf for 14 years now. “They proved that. They started out ranked sixth in the state and then almost fell out of the rankings with their play in the middle of the season. Then they came back and proved themselves in the state tournament.” Four of the top six graduated in Jeff Atwood, who played in the No. 2 spot, David Schacht (3), Kim Zurcher (4) and Jeff Dunnithan (6). Those four, along with 1985 returnees Bryan Beaty and Keith Burbank, led the Warriors to a duel record of 13-4, a sectional championship, a third place regional finish, a ninth place semi-state finish and, as said, a sixth place state finish. The Warriors finished third in the NLC tourney, trailing Rochester and Warsaw. Despite the graduation losses, Cesco knows he has back two quality players in Beaty and Burbank, who are both seniors. The key is finding No.’s 3-4-and-5. “This year we have a blend of some good experience and youth,” Cesco said. “I know what my seniors can do. If I can fill the 3-4-5 spots with players who can handle pressure, that’s the key in high school golf. Handling the pressure away from home. If we find those players, then I think there’s another possibility of getting to the regional and semistate.”
Trackmen finish 7f
By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor The Wawasee Warriors may remember the 1985 Goshen Relays as the day that John Hapner learned how to run a 400. Hapner, a senior, did not go out for high school track until this spring. Granted that running is not the most strategic of athletic events, Hapner still had a lot of catching up to do on the nuances of the sport. He did a lot of catching up — and passing — on Saturday at Goshen. He ran the anchor leg on Wawasee’s two winning relay teams, the 1600 meter relay and the Sprint Medley relay. Those two wins, combined with Mike Goodspeed’s victory in the 110 meter high hurdles, helped the Warrior trackmen accumulate 47’4 points, good for seventh place in the 24-team Class B division of the Goshen Relays. Norwell won Class B with 65 points, barely edging Manchester, Culver Military

Cesco says he is looking for players to fill “roles.” By that, the coach wants simply for the players to “play to their potential.” “There are players who I can play in those spots who have the potential to help the team do those things,” Cesco said, referring to the team’s goal of advancing in the state tournament. In Beaty, the Warriors have a player who is “a candidate for possible all-state honors,” according to the coach. The senior three-year letterwinner has made the All-NLC golf team three years in a row and should become this spring the first player in conference history to make it four years in a row. Beaty was suffering from an allergy problem when the Warriors competed at the state meet last spring, but he still was their leading golfer that day. “His eyes looked like hamburger, but he still shot two 82’s,” Cesco recalled. Keith Burbank, the team’s No. 5 player the last two years, moves up to the No. 2 slot this spring. “He’s a scrappy little kid,” Cesco said. “He’s got a good short game and a good putter.” Talented Underclassmen No less than seven players are in competition for the remaining three varsity jobs. They include seniors Brian Keim and Jay Baumgartner, junior Jeff Taylor, sophomores John Nemeth and Rob McKibben and freshmen Derek Smith and Darin Atwood. Nemeth has grabbed the early lead in the race for the third spot in the varsity lineup.. “From what I’ve seen so far, Nemeth has improved greatly,” Cesco said. “He’s playing longer off the tee
Academy, Plymouth and North Wood for the team title. It was one of the closest-ever points battles in the history of the Relays. The Class A competition was equally close. Top-ranked Gary Roosevelt won the division with 99 points. Seventh-ranked Fort Wayne Northrop was runner-up with 90 points, fifth-ranked Elkhart Central was third with 75 points and second-ranked Gary West was fourth with 67 points. Wawasee coach Jerry Minton could not recall the Warriors winning three events at the relays since at least 1976, and he couldn’t recall Wawasee ever winning more than one relay event at the track extravaganza. * “We did real well compared to what we usually do here at Goshen,” Minton said. “We usually don’t run very well at the Goshen Relays because it’s early in the season. We don’t make an all-out effort to win it. There’s too many other things around that we’d rather win.” Minton would certainly have liked to win over a certain official
and he’s sharpened up his short game.” Besides any of the above players who aren’t playing varsity on a given day, Cesco has a number of talented underclassmen with which to fill out his lineup card for junior varsity matches. That list has seven freshmen, nine altogether counting varsity candidates Derek Smith and Darin Atwood. The other 9th graders on the team are Tim Keim, Dave O’Neal, Doug Parmerlee, Bruce Jackson, Brett Harter, Rich Freeman and Steve Sweatland. Asked what he is able to do as a coach to help the players improve, Cesco said that there isn’t much he can do for them — now. “The improvement in their game has to come from what they did the summer before,” the coach said. “And then when the weather warms up, that improvement shows up. To expect it to happen in 3-4 weeks — it just” doesn’t happen. Golf is a longterm sport. “I think the most important thing I do as a coach is to work with them on their attitude,” Cesco added. “Their attitude towards good shots and bad shots is very important. They have to be very patient. They have to have confidence that if they have two or three bad holes in a row, they are going to come out of it.” That’s somewhat more of a problem this year than in past years because the Warriors’ weekday matches this spring are only nine holes instead of 18 as before. A new state law prohibits early dismissal from school for extracurricular events. “Nine holes is really like kissing your sister,” Cesco. com-
with his verbal appeal after that official disqualified Wawasee’s Steve Galegor in the 300 meter low hurdles. Galegor finished second in his race — in most Class B races there were two or three heats — but was disqualified for hitting too many hurdles. That in itself is not cause for disqualification, but the official ruled that Galegor was not trying to jump over them. Had Galegor not been disqualified, the Warriors would have had an additional eight team points, moving them up to sixth place at least. “Bad call,” Minton grumbled. ““Nothing you can do about it, but losing eight points like that bugs you, especially on such a chintzy call.” Mike Goodspeed’s winning 110 meter hurdle time of 14.75 seconds broke his own school record and came within .05 of tying the Class B record for the event, set by Plymouth’s Howard Menser. Goodspeed also ran the third
mented. “It doesn’t prove too much.” However, the Warriors still play matches or in invitationals on most Saturdays, and those matches will be 18 holes. The Warrior golf team hiked its record to 7-1 on the season by upending lOth-ranked and previously undefeated Rochester in a triple-duel match held at South Shore Golf Course in Syracuse Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors finished with a team score of 151. Rochester, now 9-1 on the year, had 155. Concord, now 1-5, finished with 169. Wawasee senior Bryan Beaty tied with Chris Smith of Rochester for individual medalist honors. Both carded 36’s. The Warriors will host the Wawasee Invitational this Saturday, April 27 starting at 9 a.m. at South Shore. The Warrior golfers had a busy week prior to last night. They split a three-way match last Thursday at Bristol, participated in the Lafayette Invitational on Saturday, then had a match with Fairfield on Monday of this week. The team suffered its only duel loss of the season so far last Thursday in the three-way match at Bristol. Elkhart Central, with 164, took first place. Wawasee had 164 and LaSalle had 177. On Saturday, the Warriors placed a very respectable sixth in the Lafayette Invitational. The field included 15 teams, including three teams — Lafayette Jeff, Kokomo and Warren Central — that are in the state’s top five in the rankings. The Warriors’ team score was 340. The Warriors had little trouble Monday at South Shore, posting a 24-shot victory over Fairfield. Bryan Beaty led the way with a three-over-par 38 for nine holes.

leg on Wawasee’s Sprint Medley relay team, as did Tim Mangas and Brian Popenfoose. Hapner was in third place when he got the baton for the final lap. He stayed close, then he and Mike Snyder of Goshen passed the lead runner from St. Joseph’s with about 120 meters left. Hapner was able to out-sprint Snyder down the stretch to secure the win. “I’m not sure what time he had, but it had to be an awful good 400,” Jerry Minton said. "Any time you can beat Snyder in a race, it’s got to be good.” Earlier in the meet, Hapner simply kept the lead passed to him as the Warriors wrapped up the 1600 meter relay. Popenfoose, Jeremy Corson and Troy Boyer ran the first three legs of that relay. The Warriors also scored with a third place efforts in the Sprint Relay (Mike Meek, Steve Galegor, Mike Goodspeed and Tim Mangas) and in the 800 Relay (Brian Popenfoose, Troy Boyer, Jeremy Corson and Tim Mangas). The 3200 Relay team of Mike Ballinger, Troy Minton, Steve Hapner and Carl Rouch placed fourth. In individual events, Todd McCulloch tied for fourth in pole vault with 11-6 feet, tying his personal best for this season, and Mike Ballinger finished sixth in the 1600 meter run. Also, the Warriors came within four inches of scoring in the discus competition where junior Jay Rhodes had a personal best heave of 137 feet and one inch. The sixth place discus thrower had a heave of 137-5. GOSHEN RELAYS Sat., April 20 Team Scoring CLASS A— l.Gary Roosevelt 99, 2.F.W. Northrop 90, 3.Elkhart Central 75, 4.Gary West 67, 5.F.W. Warrior netters lose two
The Wawasee Lady Warrior tennis team dropped two NLC matches this past week to fall to 2-5 on the season, 0-3 in the conference. The Warriors lost to Concord last Thursday and to Goshen on Monday of this week. The score was 5-0 on both occasions. There were few highlights for Wawasee in either of the two matches. Os the 10 individual matches, the only one to go more than two sets was Kelly Rensberger’s match at No. 2 singles against Concord’s Nancy Orn. Rensberger lost the first set, 6-2, but won the second set 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreaker. The two players divided the first 10 games of the rubber set, but Orn won the last two games for a 7-5 victory.

Warriors stay busy on the diamond
The Wawasee Warrior baseball team defeated visiting Northfield Tuesday afternoon to snap a fourgame losing skid. The win gives the Warriors a 4-8 record. In their other games this past week, the Warriors lost to Concord last Wednesday, 13-2; defeated Fairfield last Thursday, 11-5; lost to North Wood on Friday, 12-3; lost both ends of a doubleheader at Manchester on Saturday, 15-5 and 18-8; and lost to Plymouth on Monday of this week. 5-2. Walks and errors hurt the Warriors in the two losses at Manchester. Eighteen of the Squires’ 33 runs were unearned as the Warriors made 11 errors. And Warrior pitchers issued 11 bases on balls in the first game alone. “The walks hurt us more than the errors,” Coach Scott Siler reported. In the second game 18-8 loss, the Warriors battled back from a 6-2 deficit to tie the game in the fifth only to see Manchester explode for 12 runs in the final two innings on three errors and six hits. Scott Baker had two hits in the first game for Wawasee, and Tracy Ryman belted a three-run

homer and a double in game two, driving in four runs. Chris Yoder and Todd Roberts also doubled in the nightcap. Monday night at Plymouth, a 5-2 loss, Todd Roberts bounced back from a rough outing at North Wood and pitched respectably against the Pilgrims, who are 3-1 in the NLC, tied with Goshen a half-game behind 4-0 Bremen. Roberts went the distance and allowed nine hits, but only three walks. Chris Yoder poked a pair of singles for Wawasee and scored one of the Warrior runs. That was in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Erik Sharp. The Warriors had several scoring opportunities against Plymouth pitcher Jeff Harford, now 3-0, but left nine men on base. “We had a lot of chances offensively, with our big guys up, but we couldn’t come through,” Scott Siler said. In the 11-5 victory over Fairfield last Thursday, the Warriors lashed out 12 base hits, including home runs by Yoder, Dave Kistler and Bill Hutchinson. Yoder, Ben Beer and Tracy Ryman all added doubles to the attack. Kent Enyeart went the distance for the win, evening his record at 1-1.
