Track team wins three-way meet
By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor The Wawasee Lady Warrior track team finally opened their 1985 season last Thursday, and the Warriors made it a successful debut by defeating a pair of NLC opponents, Bremen and host Concord. The Warriors, whose scheduled season opener against Westview three weeks ago was rained out, finished with 55 points to 45 for Bremen and 36 for Concord. The difference in the outcome was that Wawasee had more scoring depth than did Bremen. The Warriors and Lions both took home six first place ribbons, but the Warriors had five seconds to one for Bremen. The host Minutewomen had one first place and seven seconds. “Some of the kids didn’t perform as well as I would have

Summer football camp
Registration is underway for the first annual Wawasee Football Skills Development Camp to be held this summer at Wawasee High School. The camp, for boys currently in grades 5-6-7-S, is a non-contact camp. Emphasis will be on football skills development. Each of the 22 positions, along with specialty skills such as kicking and passing, will be coached. The camp director is-Myron Dickerson, head football coach at Wawasee High School. Instructors will include members of the Wawasee coaching staff as well as members of the Warrior football team. Leesburg Fire Department wins benefit game Leesburg Fire Department was the winning team in the North Webster Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary Benefit Basketball game Friday, April 19 at the North Webster gym. Proceeds from the benefit game totaled approximately S6OO and will go towards the purchase of fire fighting equipment. Leesburg defeated the North Webster Teachers in round one, 52-43, and the Kosciusko County Enforcers in the final round, 40-25, to become the champions. The Enforcers earned their berth in the finals by edging the North Webster Fire Dept, team, 43-38, in the second round. Members of the teams were: North Webster Teachers — Dick Long, Jay Smith, Jim Hite, Ken Webster, Larry Pletcher, Tony Vermillion, Mitch Willaman, Mike Hall and Kirby Staley. Leesburg Fire Department — Scott Kammerer, Max Deatsman, Jerry Kammerer, Terry Eppley, Clark Charlton, Scott Charlton and Mitch Rader. Kosciusko County Enforcers — Eric Coburn, Craig Allebach, Dave Kolb, Leonard Massenburg, Tom Perzanowski, Lance Grubbs, Aaron Rovenstine, Ed Kipker, Scott Quillen, Ken Shepherd and Steve Embree. hoped,” Coach Barb Brouwer said, “but some of them aren’t in shape yet after coming back from spring break. I’m happy. We’ll take the win and when we have to have ’em, hopefully they’ll be there.” Wawasee’s six firsts were all accomplished by different girls. Senior Sandy Payne breezed to a win in the 100 meter hurdles, freshman Marcie Coy won by a whisker in the 1600 meters, junior Jeannine Gunn took top honors in high jump, sophomore Kristina Lange won the 400 meters, junior Patty Routson won with relative ease in the 800, and senior Christy Speicher had the best heave in the shot put event. But one of the Warriors’ heroes last Thursday did not win any events. She did, however, finish second no less than three times. That was freshman Steffani Jamiel, who was runner-up in high jump, long jump and in the 400 meters. “She’s a good athlete,” Brouwer said. “She had butterflies tonight and her highjumping was not very good. She was only over at 4-8 and she’s been over five foot in practice. Her 400 was pretty good and her long jump was very good.” Jamiel was second in high jump to Jeannine Gunn, who cleared 4-10, and she trailed teammate Kristina Lange by less than a second in the 400. Probably the best or closest race of the meet was won by another Wawasee freshman when Marcie Coy edged Long of Concord at the finish line, 6:11.2 to 6:11.8. Right behind those two was Wawasee senior Sherri Mock, and Warrior sophomore Ann Vitaniemi came in fourth. “I was really surprised we went l-2-and-4 in the mile,” Brouwer commented. While Christy Speicher won the shot put for Wawasee, an added bonus, Brouwer said, was in junior Michelle Harter’s second place toss. Speicher threw 34-5% feet, Harter 33-5%. “That’s her best by far,” the coach said. “She was throwing consistently about 30 feet last year, so she improved a lot.” Sandy Payne easily won the 100 meter low hurdles, as her time of 16.5 was a second faster than that
Paul Schudel, the newly named head football coach at Ball State University, will also be on hand for the July 15 camp session. Schudel was an assistant coach under Bo Schembechler at Michigan before accepting his new post. The camp will be held from July 8-12 and July 15-19. Practices will last one hour and 30 minutes each day. Fifth and 6th grade players will practice from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on the above dates, while 7th and Bth graders will practice from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. Cost of the camp is S3O. If more than one member from a family enrolls in the camp, the cost is S3O for one member and S2O for the second family member. All campers will receive a Wawasee Football Camp t-shirt. Registration forms are available now at the Syracuse, Milford and North Webster schools. The sign-up form and fee should be mailed to: Myron K. Dickerson, Wawasee High School, R.R. 3, Box 6628, Syracuse, IN 46567. Youngsters may also register by going to the high school on Saturday, May 18 between the hours of 9 and 11 a.m. Players should bring shorts, jogging or sweat pants, supporter, sweat socks and either tennis or soccer-style shoes. Skills will be taught at the camp by using drills on flexibility, foot and body control, speed improvement, all phases of individual and team concepts of offense and defense, and kicking game drills. Instructors are needed The summer swimming program will be held at Wawasee High School June 17-July 26 and there is a need for certified Red Cross water safety instructors. If anyone is interested contact Kim Lobsiger at the high school, 457-3147. No Saturday Registration This year there will be no Saturday registration sign-up for the swimming program. To eliminate the waiting in long lines, a registration form will be printed within the next two weeks in The Mail-Journal. This is die only way a registration form may be obtained so be. sure to watch the paper closely.

LAST HURDLE — Wawasee’s Sandy Payne, at right, goes over the last hurdle in a virtual tie for first place in the 300 meter hurdle event during the Lady Warriors’ double duel win last Thursday at Concord. Payne, after jumping over the hurdle, tripped and fell to the track, but still took second place in the 300 meter lows. Monhaut of Bremen, at left in the picture, won the event in 49.7 seconds. Payne, a senior, had a time of 50.4 seconds. Earlier in the meet, Payne won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.5 seconds. (Photos by Chris Cauley)
of the runner-up finisher. Later in the meet, Payne was running neck-and-neck with Monhaut of Bremen in the 300 low’s going down the stretch. Just after she leaped over the last hurdle, Payne tried to extend her body as she approached the finish line and wound up losing her balance and falling to the track. She still managed to get second place. “That was really, really a gutsout effort in the 300 hurdles,” praised Payne’s coach, Barb Brouwer, who was also happy with Payne’s winning effort in the 100 meter hurdles. “She ran a 16.5, which is not a fantastic time, but it’s a fantastic time for her for this time of year,” Brouwer said. The Warriors placed first and/or second in all individual events except the 100 and 200 meter dashes and discus. They did get a third place from Jeannine Gunn in the 100, a fourth place from Belinda Whitridge in the 200 and a third place from Shelley Brumbaugh in the discus. Brouwer’s main concern, however, had to be the two relay events, the 400 and the 1600. Wawasee finished last in both. The Warriors led halfway through the 1600 but simply ran out of gas on the third leg, and bad handoffs were the team’s ruin on the 400 relay. “We ran a 53.8 in the 400,” Brouwer noted. “The school record’s 53.4, and we had rotten, rotten handoffs. We could have easily had the school record tonight if we would’ve had good handoffs.” It was, however, a good start for the Lady Warriors. And once the Florida tans start peeling, the team should get even better. “We’re not in great shape right now,” Brouwer said. “But as time goes on, we will be.” Girls' Track Results Thursday, April 18 (At Concord) Wawasee 55 , Bremen 45 Concord 36 100 HURDLES — I.Sandy Payne (W) 16.5, 2.Hatcher (C) 17.5, 3.Wirt (C> 17.8, 4.Monhaut (B) 17.9. 100 DASH - I.Barrett (C) 13.5, 2.Luttman (B) 13.6, 3.Jeannine Gunn (W) 14.0, 4.Burgese (B) 14.1. 1600 RUN - I.Marcie Coy (W) 6:11.2, 2. Plymouth Tops Lady Warriors The Lady Warrior track team had two more meets following last Thursday’s double victory at Concord. On Saturday, the Wawasee girls participated in the Northrop Invitational in Fort Wayne. Only two local girls were able to place in the meet, but both of them earned points in two events. Sandy Payne scored with a fifth place finish in the 100 meter hubdies and with a fourth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Her times were 15.1 seconds and
50.3 seconds, respectively. Jeannine Gunn was third in the long jump with a leap of 15-11% feet. She also tied for fifth in high jump with a jump of 5-0 feet. On Monday night the Warriors travelled to Plymouth for an NLC meet, and the Warriors lost for the first time this season in duel competition as the Pilgrims escaped with a 61-48 win. ‘ Jeannine Gunn was a double winner for the Lady Warriors. She took first place in long jump (15-10%) and in high jump (5-1). Her effort in the latter event was her best of the season so far. In shot put, both Christy Speicher and Michelle Harter established personal bests as the Warriors finished 1-2. Speicher’s first place heave of 36-0 feet was only four inches off the school record, and Harter’s put was 35 feet, 10 inches. J Another highlight for the Lady Warriors was the blue ribbon performance by the 1600 meter relay team of Kristina Lange, Julie Schmahl, Jeryln Sponseller and Steffani Jamiel. Their time was 4:34. The Warriors trailed in the race by 15 yards when Jamiel got the baton for the anchor leg — she led by about the same distance when she crossed the finish line. Wawasee’s only other first place was by Sandy Payne in the 300 meter hurdles. Her time was 50.3 seconds. HOT HITTER — Chris Yoder is greeted by his Wawasee teammates after clouting a two-run home run in the Warriors* game at North Wood last Friday. Despite Yoder’s muscle, the Warriors lost to the Panthers, 12-3. Yoder also singled in the game, and he doubled and homered in Wawasee’s 11-5 victory at Fairfield last Thursday. North Wood rocks Wawosee's apple
By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor The North Wood Panthers sported a record of only 1-4-1 entering their game with the Wawasee Warriors last Friday, but they’re no weak sister. Just ask the Warriors. The Panthers pounded — literally — 11 base hits pff a trio of Wawasee pitchers, including seven hits for extra bases. When the onslaught was over, they had three doubles, two triples and two home runs. It all added up to a 12-3 North Wood victory. It raised the Panthers’ record to 2-4-1 while lowering Wawasee’s to 3-5. “Some of the pitches we made were up, but they were just hitting everything,” Warrior coach Scott Siler said. “You’re going to have those days.” But, Siler hopes, not too often. The barrage of hits started in the second when Todd Richmond led off by doubling underneath the left field fence. One out later, Doyle Stump walloped a 330-foot homer over the fence in leftcenter. North Wood continued to rock the apple in the third. The first two batters in the inning, Todd Cleveland and Rob Wenger, both rifled triples to the outfield fence to make it 3-0. A double, an error, two walks and a fielder’s choice led to three more runs and a 6-0 Panther lead. They made it 9-0 with three more in the fourth. Yoder Connbets Helped by three errors, all of them by the North Wood third baseman, the Warriors mounted a mini-comeback in the fifth. They scored three runs, two of them coming on a double by Bill Hutchinson — Wawasee’s first hit of the game — and Chris Yoder’s two-run homer to left-center. It was the second homer in as

GOLF LESSONS — Members of the Wawasee High School Golf Team along with golf pros from the three area golf courses will be visiting each junior high school on Friday, May 3, at 2:30 p.m. Students will be shown the basics of golf along with being invited to a clinic on May 11 at the South Shore Golf Club. The clinic will be 9-10:30 a.m. for sixth grade students and 10:30-12 noon for seventh grade students. Those interested in taking golf lessons may sign up at the clinic. Lessons will be given during the summer through the Lakeland Youth Center. Shown in the photo are the golf team members and golf pros visiting the area junior high schools. many days for the sophomore second sacker, who also had a single and a double in the Fairfield-NorthWood games. “He really hits in streaks,” Siler said. “When he’s hot, it’s hard to get a ball by him... He showed some power on the junior varsity last year. He hit a couple home runs and a couple triples.” The three-run inning lifted the Warrior spirits, but not for long. A walk and a hit batsman put two North Wood runners aboard in the bottom of the fifth and brought to the plate Rob Wenger, who’d tripled to the Centerfield fence earlier. This time he hit the ball over the fence. Good thing, too, because if it had been a little lower it might have gone THROUGH the fence. The blast went some 400 feet and into the woods beyond the Centerfield fence. How hard hit was it? Well, it sawed a tree in half. Okay, so it only got a limb. Even so, it was hard hit, the kind of home run you see about once every three years in high school ball. Wenger’s home run ended the scoring for both teams. North Wood lefthander Scott Warren struck out only four batters, but managed to make the Warrior batters hit ’em where they were and finished with a complete game four-hitter, his second victory in three decisions. “We just can’t seem to put it all together right now,” Scott Siler noted. “One game we’ll get the defense and the hitting and we won’t get the pitching. Another game we’ll get the pitching and the offense and not the defense.
We’re getting two out of three every time. But we’ll get there. The season’s early.” ROUNDING THE BASES - Besides Yoder’s two bingles and Hutchinson’s two-bagger, the only hit for Wawasee was by pinchhitter Travis Reiff, a single up the middle in the seventh... Scott Siler admitted he was surprised at how well North Wood hit the ball. The coach said he expected the Panthers to play the type of game they had in the past — the bunting, play-for-one-run type of game. “But when they hit the two-run homer (in the second inning), it seemed like we had our backs to the wall from that point on,” the coach said... Chris Yoder’s home run, a shot of about 335 feet to left-center, came on the first pitch to him, a fastball... Wawasee’s starting pitcher, Todd Roberts, lasted just 2% innings. He couldn’t get his fastball down below the belt and didn’t have his curveball, so North Wood batters were able to wait for a fat pitch and tee off... North Wood’s 1-4 record entering the contest was deceiving. They’d lost in nine frames to state-ranked Goshen and had played Rochester to a 2-2 nine inning tie... Perhaps the most consistent part of the Warriors’ early season play has been their offense and not the pitching and the defense, which Siler expected would be the team’s strong suits. As the coach noted, the Warriors were held under three runs only once in their first eight games.
