Theology Night Out at Saint Martin's
The book of Revelation raises many questions for us in today’s world. We ponder its relevance in the light of global news reports and we wonder if it really does foretell the future. Is the author giving us a picture of how the world will eftd? Is there a message in Revelation for us today? On Thursday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m., St martin de Porres Catholic Church, Syracuse will be hosting its spring “Theology Night Out” in the Parish Hall. The Program, “The Book of Revelation: What is it really All About?” will be presented by Sharlene Csanyi, associate director of the religious studies program for the South Bend area of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
A pot-luck dinner in St. Martin’s Parish Hall rather than dinner at a local restaurant will be a new format for this fourth “Theology Night Out”. Each person is asked to take his or her favorite pot-luck recipe — rolls, salad, vegetable or dessert and the parish will furnish the meat and beverage. Tickets for the pot-luck dinner meeting are available at the door or discounted tickets may be purchased at St. Martin’s this weekend. Reservations can be

Teachers are a dedicated group who get little credit for their hard work
There is a dedicated “group of people in the churches of the Lakeland area who get little if any credit for the hard work and long hours they put in. Most of them aren't seeking credit. They are doing their job out of a special love for the Lord and his people. Who are these people? They are the teachers who Sunday after Sunday are in the classrooms teaching youngsters who can't even talk, teaching school children, teaching teenagers, teaching young adults, teaching middle-aged people, or teaching senior citizens the lessons of the Bible. Most teachers are concerned about what they are teaching They are also concerned about the people they are teaching.

The public is welcome. Al Hamilton to speak at Christian Church Al Hamilton of Mission Outreach will be speaking this Sunday morning, April 28, at the 10 morning worship service at the Christian Church of Milford. Hamilton works with the churches and mission fields in helping missionary recruits to go to the mission field where there is a need of more help, or where the recruit might have interest. He will be informing the Milford congregation of this work. Miss Kerri Augsburger, formerly of Milford church and resident of this area, went out from Mission Outreach to Seoul, Korea, where she worked with Christ’s Korean Mission there. The ministers and church invite all to attend.
Teachers of younger children use chalkboards, magnetic boards, bulletin boards, murals, panoramas, objects, specimens, models, puppets, flannel boards, pictures and snapshots, maps, mobiles, handwork, art and the like. Teachers of older children use films, film strips and slides, transparencies, tape recordings and music to help in a lesson presentation. All use the Bible. Teaching a Sunday School class is more than an hour’s job on Sunday morning. It is hours of study, knowing the subject and how to present it. It is deciding the right aids to use for the right lesson. A good teacher knows the people in his or her class and trys to understand their needs.

Day Apart at Oakwood
The Elkhart District United Methodist Women spent the day of April 23 at the Oakwood spiritual life center in Oakwood Park at Syracuse. The meeting was titled “The Day Apart” and was a time of spiritual renewal.
Just as Jesus used symbols and imagery in his teachings, so do the people teaching his lessons in today's churches. The New Testament rewritten without imagery would be less subject to misunderstanding, but it would be stale and flat. Try to state the meaning without imagery of “Ye are the salt of the earth... ye are the light of the world.” Such an effort reveals how Jesus saved the words, packed words with meaning, featured them with imagery and set them flying on the winds of the world. He taught with emphatic seriousness: “And I say unto you. that every idle word that men shall peak, they shall give account thereof . . .” (Matthew 12:36». Just as Jesus taught by per-

sonal association, so do the teachers today. It is a truism that “we teach more by what we are than by what we say." Such is the influence of personality. We learn best by association with persons. If a young child sees a Sunday School teacher do something he knows is wrong ... the child will assume that “because teacher does it, it’s ok for him to do.” One of the most outstanding features of the method of Jesus as teacher is that he told stories. They are called parables, though some of his sayings regarded as parables are not exactly stories, but rather short comparisons, as “A city set on a hill cannot be hid." (Matthew 5:14. There are about 28 of these short comparisons and perhaps 25 different

stories. About one-fourth of all the spoken words of Jesus recorded in Mark are parables in this double sense of the term, and in Luke nearly half. The proportion is largest in Luke. The term “parable” occures some 50 times in the new testament. What a blessed privilege the teachers have to tell again the stories Jesus told so long ago and make them live in the lives of the people in their classrooms. In each of the parables people can see themselves. Parables, to teachers, become living, vital and meaningful and they try their best to pass this along to those in their classrooms. Effective Teachers Following is a list of ways to make teaching more effective:

National Day of Prayer
Thursday, May 2, will be the United State’s 33rd consecutive year few a National Day of Prayer. It is an occasion that all Americans should note. President Reagan has set the 1985 National Day of Prayer date and plans are under way to observe it on the national, state and local levels. Governors and many mayors have been alerted to this observance and asked to initiate appropriate activities in their areas of influence. “We are all God’s handiwork and it is appropriate for us as individuals and as a nation to call to Him in prayer.’’said President Reagan in his proclamation. Observances of a national day of prayer date back to 1775, when the Continental Congress declared the first one. Through the succeeding decades other national days of prayer were declared from time to time until 1952, when by joint action, the two houses of Congress established the custom of a national day of prayer on an annual basis. By this action, the nation’s Chief Executive was instructed to set aside one such day each year. Churches, synagogues and those in charge of public buildings are being asked to take part by ringing their bells at noon on May 2 as a reminder of the day and as a call to united prayer. On an individual basis, Americans are being encouraged to observe the National Day of Prayer in ways appropriate to their own traditions. All citizens are being asked to “Take 5 at 12.” Meaning to take at least five minutes at noon, wherever they happen to be, to thank God for the blessings we enjoy, including our freedom itself and to ask God’s continued blessing on our nation in the days ahead. .
Demonstrate whenever possible. The lesson is for the class, not the class for the lesson. Use drama, suspense, surprise. Exposure is not teaching. Always be well prepared. Avoid monotomy in the manner of presentation. Begin at students' level. Be aware of physical comforts. Set a comfortable environment; establish rapport. Use many visual aids. Make the room attractive. Plan special events. Visit absentees: Know the lesson well. Make the lesson practical and usable this week. Use language the class understands.

Prayer has given strength and courage to Americans as we have endured war and built our nation in freedom. Hopefully, all Americans of all faiths will respond strongly to the National Day of Prayer appeals and especially to the call for at least “5 (minutes) at 12” on May 2. In the tradition started by the Continental Congress, let’s once again give thanks and recognize our need for God’s continued help and guidance. Win-Some Women Retreat begins Over 1,000 women are expected to take part in the 34th annual Win-Some Women Retreat, beginning Wednesday evening, April 24.
