IVa wasee hosts first prep lacrosse game in state annals
By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor Some may snicker when they read this, but the Wawasee Lady Warriors’ basketball team will not be the school’s only state runner-up team in this 1984-85 school year. ' Another state runner-up team is the Wawasee Lacrosse Club, which lost to Culver Military Academy, 7-5, in the state championship game Sunday afternoon at the Wawasee football field. The game was, in fact, the only high school lacrosse game played in Indiana this spring, thus making it automatically for the state championship. Not only that, the game was — as far as anyone knows — the first high school lacrosse game ever played in Indiana. There’s probably no way of verifying that without doing some painstaking research or making a lot of long distance phone calls, but Bob Williams, the Sports Information Director of the Indiana High School Athletic Association in Indianapolis, was contacted. He said that lacrosse has definitely never been an IHSAAsanctioned sport and that so far as he knows, no high school teams in Indiana have ever played each other.

Some-60 fans and parents attended what was possibly an historic occasion — if the sport ever does become a regular item on the high school sports menu — and they witnessed a surprisingly well-played contest. It certainly was even. There were four ties and three lead changes in the game, which consisted of four 10-minute quarters. Wawasee finished the game with 34 shots on goal compared to CMA’s 32 shots on goal. Brad Mitchell of Wawasee and Lee Jones of Culver Military were given MVP trophys after the game. Mitchell, with 15, took nearly half of Wawasee’s shots and he made four of the team’s five goals. Nils Haugland had the other goal for the home team. Jones made two goals for CM A. The one category that was not even was penalties. Wawasee had three the entire game while CMA had at least three times that many. “I don’t know if you could say this team is well-coached or not, but we had virtually no penalties,” noted Wawasee Coach Thorpe Mitchell, Brad’s father. “Lots of penalties,” commented CMA Coach Bob Knight (yes, Bob Knight) when asked how he thought the two teams played.

Play Rough At Times The referee for the game was Mike Hill, who played collegiate lacrosse at the University of Maryland and now works out of South Bend as an NCAA lacrosse official. It wasn’t long into the match that a Culver Military player became the first player to ever be ejected from an Indiana high school lacrosse game. The player was given a penalty for an illegal cross-check and verbally “maligned” Hill as he walked off the field. Hill said he warned the player twice, then ejected him when the player continued swearing. The play in the first half, which ended in a 2-2 tie, was too physically rough, Hill said, but the players used more finesse in the second half. “They got a little bit rough, but a lot of these kids play football and that’s where it comes from,” Hill said. “I told the coaches (at halftime) to instruct the kids to start playing the ball more within a five-yard radius, instead of playing the man, and they did. The play cleaned up in the second half. “For refereeing my first high school game, I was very surprised,” Hill said. “It was good.” The final score of 7-5 represents what would be a low-scoring game at the collegiate level where teams sometimes score 25 goals in a game. “It’s ability to handle the ball,” Hill explained. “In college ball, the ball rarely touches the ground. It’s either being cradled or being passed most of the time.” Thorpe Mitchell, who was a goalie when he played collegiately, agreed that it was a lowscoring game, “... but not for the high school level,” he said. “They don’t have the stick-handling skills and that’s why you’ll see a higher percentage of groundballs, the' scooping and the stickhandling.” While Culver Military has had club lacrosse for some five or six years — they played college teams or high school teams in other states — the game was the first for Wawasee after two springs of nothing but intersquad practices. “I was really pleased,” Mitchell said. “I really think the game could have gone either way. We could’ve just as easily won it as lost it. In fact, we

shoulda won that game.” Rally Falls Short Brad Mitchell, with an assist by Matt Line, scored early in the third period to give Wawasee a 3-2 advantage, but CMA tied it and took the lead on goals by Lee Jones and John Pittman. Nils Haugland’s goal —a shot from about 25 feet in front of the goal — tied the score at 4-4 about four minutes into the fourth period, but Culver Military took the lead for good with a pair of goals in the next three minutes. They were scored by Steve Davjp and Corey Johnston. Down 6-4 with only 3Mj minutes left, the Warriors went to Brad Mitchell whenever possible down the stretch, and he responded with his fourth goal of the game at about the mark. He was passed the ball at about midfield and weaved downfield through traffic, never looking to pass. He shot and scored about 18 feet in front of the Eagle goal. The Warriors had two chances to tie in the final minute and a half, but Mitchell and Rick Peterson both missed on shot attempts and Lee Jones, with an assist by Stephen Wood, scored an insurance goal for CMA with 21 seconds left. Brad Mitchell scored both of Wawasee’s first half goals, the first one unassisted early in the first quarter, the second one late in the second quarter with an assist from Nils Haugland. Afterwards, Thorpe Mitchell said he was pleased with most aspects of the game — the crowd, which was supportive, and the Wawasee defense. He mentioned goalie Drew Parr in particular. “He’s a little disappointed with himself because we got outscored, but his clearing and his heads-up play were very commendable,” Mitchell said. “I thought our attack would score more goals,” he added. “I was disappointed that way.” The Wawasee Lacrosse Club, which is still trying to establish a financial base to work from and is still looking for some fulltime coaches, is set to play in a fourteam tournament this weekend at Columbus, Ohio. Wawasee also has a tentative date to play New Trier High School in Chicago on Saturday, May 4. New Trier, which has a student population of about 3,000, is Thorpe Mitchell’s high school alma mater.

Wawasee boys' track win two conference victories
The Wawasee boys’ track team gained a couple of big conference victories when they defeated visiting North Wood and Rochester in a triple duel meet Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors edged North Wood, 74-73, and Rochester came in a distant third with 11 points. The double victory raises the Warriors’ duel meet record to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference. The outcome was not decided until the very end. In the next-to-last event, the 3200 meter run, the Warriors got a first place and a third place from Mike Ballinger and Troy Minton, respectively.

That gave Wawasee a 71-68 lead with one event to go. They needed to finish at least second in the 1600 Relay and got exactly that —a runner-up finish behind North Wood. Runners on that relay for Wawasee were Brian Popenfoose,. Steve Galegor, Jeremy Corson and John Hapner. Double winners for Wawasee in the meet were Steve Galegor in the low and high hurdles and Carl Rouch in the 800 and 1600 meter runs.
