Wawasee netters victorious in matches

By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor Going into Tuesday afternoon’s match against NLC foe Bremen, the Wawasee Lady Warrior tennis team was already two-thirds of the way toward winning as many matches this spring as last spring. The Warrior netters opened the season last week by defeating first Westview, 3-2, then Lakeland, 4-1. They suffered their first loss of the season this Monday when visiting Fairfield took a 4-1 decision. Their 2-1 start looks pretty good when it is compared to last year’s 3-10 ending. But it has not left any illusions of grandeur. “Last year was a different bailgame because we were snowed out the first three matches, so we wound up moving right into conference play,” Coach Cindy Peterson observed. “We’re tough in non-conference. It’s the conference matches that are so tough. Our conference is tough, there’s no other way about it.” Through the team’s first three matches, none of the Lady Warrior players was undefeated but all had won at least once. In last Wednesday’s seasonopening 3-2 win over Westview, both Wawasee doubles teams came through with victories, as did junior Kelly Rensberger at No. 2 singles. In the Warriors’ 4-1 triumph over Lakeland, sophomore Jennifer Tuttle was a winner at No. 1 singles, with Lisa Hunter, the only senior on the team, winning at 3 singles. Kay Stackhouse and Christi Weaver also won at 2 doubles. “The Westview match was, for both teams, kind of a very slow match,”, Cindy Peterson said. “Nobody was outstanding or aggressive. It was just that we kept the ball in play more than they did. “The Lakeland match was more intense,” the coach added. “They had excellent girls at No. 1 and 2. Our kids really became aggressive and hustled.” At No. 1 singles, for example, Jennifer Tuttle came back from a 2-4 deficit in the rubber third set to post a 6-4 win. Falcons No Slouch The Warriors probably entered Monday’s home match against Fairfield with confidence as the Falcons are not a traditionally strong team in girls’ tennis. They were 0-1 entering their match with the Warriors, but that doesn’t count their runner-up finish in an invitational over the weekend. The Falcons lowered the boom on the Warriors quickly, winning

at 1 and 2 singles in straight sets and at 2 doubles in straight sets. “We were out-played,” Peterson said. “Their No. 1 and 2 players were really tough hitters. Our kids couldn’t get the racket on the ball.” Wawasee’s lone winner was the No. 1 doubles tandem of Christi Carmichael and Shawn Anderson, both juniors. The win upped their record to 2-1. “They’ve played together for a couple years,” Peterson said. “They pretty much know each other. Christi is very aggressive. Shawn’s very consistent. That makes a good team.” Meanwhile, Lisa Hunter and Fairfield’s Karmen Miller were engaged in a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles. Fairfield had already clinched a team victory, but both players scrapped and hustled as if the match were on the line. The momemtum swung back and forth in all three sets, but Miller of Fairfield escaped with a 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 victory. “Lisa’s playing a good match,” Coach Peterson noted during the third set. “She’s becoming a little bit more aggressive, which I like to see from her because with her height it’s hard to come to the net against a lot of kids.” Gotta Keep Hustling The way Hunter was playing — aggressively — is how Peterson

would like to see all the Wawasee players do it. She said that they tend to quit moving their feet when things aren’t going so well on the court. “They gotta move their feet,” Peterson said. “You saw that just watching them. They’re flatfooted. They know it. I don’t know how to get them to move. We’ve done everything. We’ve done all types of drills.” Lack of hustle, however, is not what caused Jennifer Tuttle to drop a quick 6-0, 6-1 decision at 1 singles. Donna Bender’s line drive serve was a factor. “Tuttle’s a sophomore,” Coach Peterson said. “She’s young, she’s got ability, she’s inexperienced. But she can actually beat anybody on the team because of her aggressiveness. Tonight she was flat-footed?’ At 2 singles, Kelly Rensberger lost for the first time this season when JoAnn Yoder managed a 6-3, 7-5 win. “Kelly came back the second set,” Peterson said. “She actually should have won. When she got used to hitting against her, she got back in the ballgame. But she got down that first set and couldn’t get back up.”

Peterson said the Warriors should improve once the conference season starts, though the team’s record may not improve — because of the caliber of play in the NLC. “Individually, they know what they’ve got to do,” the coach said. “They know what players they’ll have trouble matching up with, but they’re gonna have to give ’em a good match anyway. “As a team goal, we’d like to come up in the conference,” Peterson added. “Our record last year was 3-and-10. It was a very poor record for us. I’d like to at least see that come up to around .500, which it could.” VARSITY RESULTS Wedn., April 10 Wawasee 3, Westview 2 No. 1 Singles - Kerri Wilt (We) def. Syracuse man competes in Boston Marathon

By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor 9 Tony Clouse went east ready, willing and able to put forth his best effort in the Boston Marathon. It’s too bad, as far as he’s concerned, that he wasn’t able to. Heat, too many runners and a crowd that didn’t give runners enough room kept Clouse from running his best race. • “I told the kids, ‘lt’s like running in a phone booth,’ ” Clouse said of the race. Clouse lives in Syracuse but teaches 7th and Bth grade social studies at Milford Junior High, where he is also the girls’ track coach. He and eight other members of the Fort Wayne Track Club participated in Monday’s 89th Boston Marathon. One of those members is Columbia City’s Betty Nelson, the 15th place finisher in the women’s race. Clouse, who’s 47, was competing in the 40-49 age division. He estimated that there were 1,500 runners in that division. The overall field included 5,546 men and women. Clouse is guessing that he finished somewhere in the middle of the pack (official results weren’t known immediately after the race). Clouse said it took him three« minutes just to reach the starting line of the race because of the large field. Only the “big name” runners are assured of a spot near the front of the pack. It was miles after the starting line before he was able to establish any sort of a running gait,~ he said. 1 “The crowds are just awesome,” Clouse reported. “You almost as a runner get scared because there’s people around you all day. You can’t run your pace. We like to run a sevenminute pace (for each mile). We never came close to that yesterday. I ran probably an 8:30. I’d say that probably only the top 200 have a chance at Boston.”

Trackmen win relays

The Wawasee boys’ track team bounced back from a loss to Goshen last Thursday to capture the team championship in the first annual Monument City Relays held at Angola Middle School on Saturday. The Warriors won the title with 106, 10 more than runner-up Angola. Seven teams participated in the relay-style meet. First place winners from Wawasee included Mike Goodspeed in the 110-meter high hurdles, the Distance Medley Relay team and the 800 meter relay team. The Warriors also grabbed seconds in four relay events and in three individual events. The Warriors returned to duel meet action Tuesday night at Plymouth in an NLC conference meet. The Pilgrims went away with a 72-55 victory, dropping the Warriors’ NLC duel meet record to 1-2 (1-3 overall). Mike Goodspeed maintained his unblemished record in the 110 meter high hurdles with a win Tuesday night, but he was closely challenged by Heaslip of Plymouth. Goodspeed won with 15.1 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than Heaslip. Goodspeed also ran to victory' in the 200 meter dash (24.2), and he ran the anchor leg of the Warriors’ winning 400 meter relay team. Todd McCollogh won the pole vault competition for the first time this season with a vault of 11

The winner was Geoff Smith, a 31-year-old Englishman, who finished the 26-mile, 385-yard course in 2:14.05. Clouse qualified for the Boston Marathon by completing a marathon in Milwaukee last fall in 3:05. He was tired and sore after that race, not so after the race Monday. “When I ran in Milwaukee, I was just plastered when I got

Also for Wawasee, Steve Galegor took first place in the 300 meter low hurdles with his time of 42.1 seconds. Carl Rouch finished second in both the 800 and 1600 meter races, and Mike Ballinger .as runner-up in the 3200 meters. Scot McDowell grabbed a second place ribbon in the shot put with his heave of and Jay Rhodes was runner-up in discus with Steve Sturgill finished third in both the shot and discus for Wawasee. You should feel real bad the next day, like a truck has run over your legs/ They say a runner ‘hits the wall-’ I didn’t hit the wall. I didn’t Wave any wall to hit.” j MayQ/tAtSO The Boston Nrarathon-was the 16th marathonr that Clouse has competed in, Znd he guesses that he’s run in lw races altogether in the past fiv/years. “I knovf someone’s going to figure ourthat that’s over SSOO in entry Clouse quipped. Thoqtgh he’s 47, Clouse is a child/ of the running boorp that has si wept the country in recent years. He’s become a dedicated runner in only the past five years. “I was concerned about my health,” he explained. “I weighed probably 30 to 50 pounds too much. I knew if I started running I could lose some weight.” He also finds that running relaxes him. “There’s just enough things to focus on, to keep your mind on, that I think it does relax you,” he said. “Then, of coursje, there’s the training aspect.” He now runs 300 days a year. In the month of training prior to a marathon, he runs about 60 miles a week. “The only thing you can’t practice is the weather,” alluding to the 75 degree temperature in Boston on Monday. His tentative plans are to run three or foi)r more marathons, then perhaps seek out something else when he’turns 50. “At 50, mgwbe you should think about skateboarding,” he said. “Or walking. I think walking is one of the better exercises.” Then again, a lot of golfers have promised to never play golf again after firing an 85. “I’m disappointed with my slow time, but I’m thrilled that I had the opportunity, the privilege of going,” Clouse said. “I’m not sure I’ll ever go back, but it’s like the guy who never catches any fish — ‘Next time, we’ll kill ’em.’
