Warriors come from behind to top Eagles

By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor The Wawasee Warriors’ baseball team spotted visiting Columbia City a quick 4-0 lead Friday afternoon, but battled back to score a 7-5 victory behind the arm — and bat —of Rob Jewson. t Jewson, one of only three seniors on the Wawasee roster, pitched 6% innings to earn his first victory of the 1985 season. At the plate he went 3-for-3, including a pair of doubles, three runs scored and a run batted in. The win gave the Warriors a 2-0 record and provided a confidence

boost heading into Saturday’s twinbill against Northridge. “Even though we’re young (five sophomores in Friday’s starting lineup), we’ve got some good ballplayers,” Coach Scott Siler said. “The kids showed a lot of guts. They were down a lot early and they could have just folded up, but they hung in there. You get a team dominated by seniors, you expect them to do that, but not sophomores.” It was, however, the Wawasee upperclassmen who provided the impetus for the comeback win. The top four in the batting order, all juniors or seniors, combined for eight of the Warriors’ nine

base hits, and they scored all seven runs. “Those are the guys we’re going to have to count on to hit the ball,” Siler said. Leadoff batter Billy Signorelli, the senior centerfielder, had one hit and scored once, Jewson was 3-for-3 as mentioned, junior shortstop Dave Kistler was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the third spot of the batting order, and clean-up hitter Tracy Ryman, a senior, was 2-for-2 with three RBl’s. The Warriors’ only other base hit came from sophomore Chris Yoder, who delivered a clutch two-out single in the fifth to

climax Wawasee’s winning fourrun rally. First Inning Disaster The Eagles came to Wawasee with a 2-0 record — wins over North Wood and Carroll — and they jumped on top quickly against the Warriors with four gift runs in the top of the first. Six of the Eagles’ first seven batters reached base safely in the uprising, and three Wawasee errors made the four runs all unearned. After the rough start, however, Jewson settled down and retired 13 of the next 14 batters he faced before his control deserted him late in the game. The lefthander walked four batters in the sixth and seventh innings, and sophomore Todd Roberts, the winning pitcher in Wawasee’s opening day upset of East Noble, came on to get the last out. “I think I was warm enough at the beginning, but I think I was trying to throw too hard,” the senior southpaw said. “I think that’s what happened at the end of the game, too, when I was walking a lot of people. I was throwing past my potential, trying to throw harder than I actually can.” Coach Siler seemed pleased as punch with Jewson’s outing, as he had been with Todd Roberts’ effort against East Noble two days earlier. “Our pitching has been outstanding so far,” Siler said. “That’s what we’re going to have to have. If Rob and Todd can keep doing the jobs they’re doing, we’re not going to have to score a lot of runs to win.” Jewson walked five and struck out five, and all five runs he allowed were unearned. He said his curveball was his best pitch against the Eagles. “Whenever I was down in the count, I could bring that in,” he

& said. “My fastball wasn’t working that great, so I decided I’d throw the curveball and go down under a little bit with the sidearm stuff.” Huntley Tough Early Down by four before many spectators had even settled into their seats, the Warriors got one run back in the bottom of the first off the Eagles’ hard-throwing righthander, Lee Huntley. Rob Jewson scored it, doubling hard to left-center with one out, then coming around to score on a pair of passed balls. Huntley had struck out four straight Warrior batters and five of the last six when Jewson came to the plate again with two outs in the third inning. This time Jewson beat out a roller into the third baseshortstop hole, and he took second when the throw bounced away from Eagle first sacker Rod Zorger. Dave Kistler, the next batter, rifled a single into Centerfield to score Jewson, and, after Kistler stole second, Tracy Ryman singled up the middle for his first RBI of the day. That drew the Warriors to within one run at 4-3, and they took the lead for good with a fourrun fifth. The Warriors punched out five hits in the uprising, four of them consecutively. Billy Signorelli started the rally with a single to left. He was breaking for second base on a steal attempt when Jewson ripped a double to center, and Signorelli raced all the way home with the tying run. That brought up Dave Kistler, who singled to left to put runners on the corners. Kistler stole second without a play, and both he and Jewson danced home on Tracy Ryman’s base hit to center. One out later, Ryman scored on Chris Yoder’s clutch

Signorelli, a senior centerfielder, ignited a four-run fifth inning with a single. He scored shortly afterwards on Rob Jewson’s booming double to center. The run tied the score at 4-4. Diamond Warriors drop three games

The Wawasee Warrior baseball team, fresh off upsets of both East Noble and Columbia City last week, could not maintain that momemtum over the weekend or early this week. The Warriors dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader with Northridge, 10-3 in the first game and 10-2 in the nightcap. The Raiders, who improved to 4-1, lashed out 17 base hits in the twinbill but they were also aided by Wawasee’s defense, which committed 13 errors. “Our defense just completely broke down against Northridge,” Coach Scott Siler reported. “It wasn’t one person in particular. We had 13 errors, and I don’t know that any one person had more than two. We weren’t concentrating well Saturday.” In the opener, Wawasee grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Billy Signorelli, Dave Kistler and Travis Reiff all had singles in the inning. However, Northridge bounced back with one run in the second inning and four in the third, then put the game away with a fiverun seventh. Singles by Erik Sharp, Rob Jewson and Tracy Ryman helped the Warriors score a run in their last at-bat. Kent Enyeart took the pitching loss for Wawasee. He pitched the first 6% innings with Kevin Parker finishing up. As they had in game one, the Warriors jumped on top 2-0 in the initial inning. Walks to Jewson and Kistler and a single by Ryman set the table for Todd Roberts, who singled to drive in two. Again, however, Northridge stormed back, this time with three in the second, two in the fifth and five in the sixth. Starter Ben Beer took the defeat in his first start of the year for Wawasee. Kevin Parker pitched the middle three innings of relief, and Erik Sharp finished up the last two innings. The Warriors played their first NLC contest of the season Monday night against Bremen, and the Warriors fell to 2-3 by losing, 7-5. The game, played at Wawasee, featured four home runs, two by each side. Wawasee golfers open on winning note The Wawasee Warriors’ 1985 golf team opened its season successfully on Saturday at the Raber Golf Course in Bristol. The Warriors won a four-way meet also involving Michigan City Marquette, Elkhart Memorial and Lakeland. The Warriors’ team total of 325 edged secondplace Marquette by two strokes. Bryan Beaty of Wawasee was meet medalist with an 18-hole score of 72. Teammate Keith Burbank tied for the second-best score with a round of 77. Following are results: WAWASE E (325): Bryan Beaty 37-35 - 72. Keith Burbank 3S-39—77. John Nemeth 46-40 — 06, Darin Atwood 46-44 — 90. Jeff Taylor 45-46 — 91. M.C. Billy Signorelli slammed a solo shot to left field in the seventh for Wawasee, and Tracy Ryman belted a two-run homer to right field in the fifth. Dave Kistler, who’d singled, scored ahead of Ryman. Both Bremen home runs were good for two runs. The Warriors’ first run was scored by Todd Roberts in the fourth. Erik Sharp got the RBI with a groundout to second. Roberts suffered the pitching defeat, evening his record at 1-1. Kevin Parker, for the third straight game, pitched in relief. Roberts, who went the first 5%, was plagued by eight bases on balls. “I told the kids that I thought we lose those games Saturday, but that yesterday (Monday) we just got beat,” Scott Siler said. “They made their hits count and we put too many on with walks. We just gave them too many chances to hit with men on base.” Despite the fact that Wawasee’s pitching staff has surrendered 17 runs in the last three games, Siler says he is not worried about it. “Our pitching’s doing all right,” he said. “We’re hurting ourselves with walks right now. But up until yesterday we’d only given up seven earned runs — we gave up five yesterday. So we’ve given up 12 earned runs in 35 innings. That’s not bad.” Bright spots in the Bremen loss would be that the Warriors made only one miscue in the field and pounded out nine hits on offense. “I thought we hit the ball better yesterday than we have all year so far,” Siler commented. “Even our outs were solid, and they robbed us of at least three hits.”

single to center. / Jewson worked out of a twp on, nobody out situation in the t :Xth, but ran into more trouble/n the seventh. An error, a doiple — Columbia City’s first hit sr ice the third inning — and tw4 walks forced in a run to 7-5, and Siler relieved Jewson with sophomore Todd Roberts. It took Roberts just two pitches to get the third out, a fly ball to center field. ROUNDING THE BASES — After two games the Warriors had fanned 22 times while Jewson and Roberts hatfa total of only seven between them. However, the Warriors were doing a better job of hitting in the clutch than thein opponents as Wawasee left only eight men on base in two garnet, the opponents 16... Dave Kistleij stole two bases against Columbia City to give him three for the season. Tracy “Wheels” Ryman stole his first of the season Friday, catching the Eagles napping and stealing third without a play during the four-run fifth. He was rewarded with a 'O” by the Warrior bench... Rob Jewson had the kind of game players dream about having, a pitching win and a good day at the plate, but he wanted to give credit to his Supporting cast. The only Wawasee error after the first was] by Jewson himself in the seventh inning. “I was real happy with what I did, but I couldn’t have done it without the rest of these guys because they (the Eagles) hit some balls on me,” he said. “After the first inning was over, they played a super bailgame.”... Was Scott Siler surprised at being 2-0? “Let’s say I’m excited about being 2-0,” he said with a laugh.
