Football League with innovation. The USFL has decided to use television replay to prevent gross injustices via mistaken calls. USFL umpires stress that this utilization is limited. It relates to status of the ball. Did the receiver catch it? Was he in bounds? Was the ball fumbled? Etc. Instant TV replay can settle this when officials have been fooled. This step, which will have to be taken by the NFL eventually, also, is progress. It has been recommended by many sports columnists, including this one, for years. Another change by the USFL is to move to fall for next year’s play. The feeling is that fall is football time. The fact that the USFL is playing this spring meant Doug Flutie of the New Jersey Generals, and others who came from college, didn’t have much time for the transition. Flutie faced heavy pressure in his debut against Birmingham. While he didn’t complete a pass until the third quarter (one was earlier negated by a penalty), he then settled down. That 28-38 loss to the Stallions may have been the right start. It eased the pressure; one suspects he’ll have his day. Area wresfiers travel to tournaments Area wrestlers continued to travel the tournament trail over the weekend, with grapplers competing in tourneys in Fort Wayne and at Madison, Wis. Brad Traviolia, a junior at Wawasee High School, competed in the tournament at Madison. By winning three of five matches, Traviolia qualified for the central nationals. Also competing at Madison was Jeff Welborn, who won two matches and lost two. A tournament was also held by the Southeast Wrestling Club at Harding High School in Fort Wayne Saturday. Mitch Price and Tom Mangas were there from the Wawasee Wrestling Club. Price placed fourth at 121 pounds. Local wrestlers will be in action again this weekend at a Bantam-Senior wrestling tournament at Bellmont High School in Decatur.
