Lent clarified
By GLEN LONG . Staff Writer Lent is a word, a period of time related to church, about which most of us are aware. However, some of us would be hard pressed to explain it to others. The Reverend David L. Hyndman, Vicar of All Saints Episcopal Church on a south shore of Lake Wawasee does an excellent job. He clarifies Lent by explaining its history in the church, pointing out that the Episcopal Church observance is the one he knows best. In the early church the two major celebrations were Easter and Pentecost, Easter being the time of the Jewish Passover. Since the early church was a secret fellowship due to danger of punishment, various signs, symbols and practices developed to draw and help hold the church group together. Baptisms were done just before Easter. The worshippers “in training” for baptism were called catechumens. The training time was a time of spiritual and intellectual instruction and preparation. This period, of varying lengths of initially, gradually became telescoped into roughly a 40-day time frame. The church leaders came to realize that the catechumens benefitted greatly in their spiritual lives from this time of study. So they decided this value should be available for all church members once a year. Thus the 40-day period of Lent evolved, beginning on Ash Wednesday each year. The 40 days takes you right to Easter if you exclude the Sundays, which in the Episcopal Church are not observed as being part of Lent. The whole liturgical year evolves around Lent. The season of Lent and Easter is the pinnacle of the Episcopal phurch year. Lent has, in the past, been referred to as “The season from ashes to fire.” Ash Wednesday, as the beginning of Lent, is a very important ceremony in the Episcopal Church. Ashes are used in the ceremony to signify the cross on the forehead of each believer. These ashes are from the palms which were used the previous year to commemorate Palm Sunday. Father Hyndman prepares these each year after Palm Sunday. This ceremony thus ties one year to the next in the churches life. A tradition which All Saints Episcopal Church observes is that of veiling the crosses during Lent. This comes from an old Anglican Church tradition of veiling crosses at certain times. The color of the veils signifies a specific item in the beliefs of the church. The images in the church

are presently all veiled with purple cloths. Next Sunday, which will be Palm Sunday, the veils will be red. On that Sunday The church commemprates The Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Also recounted in the service is one of the passion narratives, thus the red veils signify the Passion of Christ. The narrative this year will be from the Gospel of Mark. The service of Maundy Thursday. just before Good Friday, is a joyful experience for the Church. The veils will be white to signify two events, the institution of the Last Supper and Communion and the act of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. After this service • the altar will be stripped of all items and black veils will replace white during Good Friday. Violet veils are in place on Holy Saturday until noon. All veils are then removed and altar items replaced for Easter Sunday. There is a growing tradition in the Episcopal Church of observing an Easter vigil. This service begins about 11 p.m. on Easter Eve. It begins with a candlelight service in which the sanctuary is initially dark. A lonO candle is carried in and used to light the candle of each worshipper. At this service an ancient hymn, “The Exalted.”is recited and

followed by a series of lessons which are prophesies of salvation. Baptisms are then completed and the altar party leaves. They return shortly with Easter vestments, the Church lights come on and all is ready for Easter morning. Father Hyndman feels that the Episcopal Church offers a rich tradition of symbolism which helps people hold onto their religion. Fasting, colors in the church, texts studied and the sermons all give them constant reminders of the their faith and the period of Lent. He states that some of the best the church can offer are art, * music and drama to provide some of the “joys of religion” and its richness. Father Hyndman has been a large part of the growth of All Saints Episcopal for the past 19 years. He was the first full time pastor, it having been a summer only church previously. He is very pleased, and it shows, to have been able to stay at this beautiful church by Wawasee Lake for so long. Father Hyndman wishes to remind his parishioners that next Sunday will be the annual visit of Bishop William Sheridan from South Bend.

Power with words
The following was received from Pastor Steve in Bloomington, 111., by Steve Whittinghill, North Webster Church of God. What does this look like to you - ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ? The alphabet, you say. Well, you’re right. But this collection of 26 letters is so much more than that. Let’s take a look. I can pick letters from this alphabet and write the word good or bad. Look at your hand. You can curl it into a fist and shake it at someone, make an obscene gesture, plant flowers, pick up and fix a child’s broken toy, cany food to a friend in a nursing home, pat your children on the backhand encourage them, write someone who needs a letter — the list goes on and on. The hand of a murderer looks and functions just like the hand of a doctor. Are you beginning to see the point I’m trying to make? The only difference with most things

in life is how the owner or possessor chooses to use them. So this little alphabet is an illustration of life. It can spell life or death, happiness or sadness, peace or war, positive or negative. What does the scoreboard of your life show? Who is winning in your life, good or evil? Are your hands building bombs or teaching children? Your life is what you make it! Circumstances may catch you off guard and others may direct your life to a certain extent, but you alone will be responsible for your life when you stand before God. If you’re not satisfied with the way your life is heading, seek Jesus. I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He (God) will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” That is a promise from God! Read Acts 16:31. Your life is a book. Each thing you do is written in it. What does your book say?
