Wawasee High School honors winter athletes
Athletes in grades 9-through-12 were honored during Winter Sports Recognition ceremonies Monday night at Wawasee High School. Letters and awards were presented to boy and girl athletes in basketball, swimming, wrestling and gymnastics. Cheerleaders, managers, statistic cians and trainers were also feted. As Wawasee Athletic Director Hal Traviolia noted in his introductory remarks, “This is one of the finest winter sports awards nights we have ever had here at Wawasee High School." Wawasee teams enjoyed a record-setting winter in 1984-85, highlighted by a Final Four appearance and State Runner-Up finish for the Lady Warriors’, basketball team. Athletes in wrestling and boys’ swimming also made appearances at state level competition. Wawasee’s five teams in winter sports captured two sectional championships, two runner-up finishes in sectional competition, and one third place finish. Four Wawasee athletes received the highest sports award possible at the high school, the Blanket Award. To earn the award, athletes must have accumulated at least 18 points during their high school careers. Two points are given for each major award (varsity letter) and one point is given for a minor award (junior varsity letter).' Blanket winners were Sheila Kleinrichert, 18 points in cross country, track and basketball; Sandy Payne, 20 points in volleyball, track and basketball; Anita Swope, 18 points in volleyball, track and basketball; and Christy Speicher, 20 points in basketball, volleyball and track. The highest number of points an athlete can earn in a career, is 24, so two of the girls can climb within two of that figure this spring. Dr. Kenneth Webster and Phil Payne of the Lakeland School Board presented special awards to athletes and coaches who achieved state level success: Lance Lantz, Brad Traviolia, Michelle Harter, Lori Galloway, Sheila Kleinrichert, Sandy Payne, Christy Speicher, Anita Swope, Kelly Brooks, Karla Stichter, Amy Bucher, Becca Stiver, Ann Vitaniemi, Belinda Whitridge, Barb Brouwer, Jim Hite and Dale Brannock.
