10 YEARS AGO, MARCH 12,1975 Paul Miller of Milford passed his tests and all requirements last week and received his private pilot’s license. Paul is 17 years of age and is president of the senior class at Wawasee high school. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. T.A. Miller of Milford. He has applied for admittance to the U.S, Air Force academy at Colorado Springs. Milford was among the fire units which were called to assist the New Paris firemen at a factory fire on Sunday. The major fire was at Parisian Industries on Railroad street in that town. “And they keep telling me it’s an honor” are the words of Della B. as she tells of having a cow and newborn calf named after her during the past week. 20 YEARS AGO, MARCH 11,1965 The Milford Lions club met at the Melody Case for the last time on Monday. Due to the closing of the restaurant on Saturday they must find a new meeting place by the March 15th meeting. Due to the tournament and other activities of the evening few members attended and a very short meeting was held. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Baumgartner returned to Milford Tuesday night from California where they had been visiting for the past few weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Cleo W. Estep at Ventura. Mr. Estep and Mrs. BaumgartLamp shades Cellophane should be removed from lamp shades before using them because the heat from the bulb shrinks the cellophane and tends to pull the shade out of shape.
The world of colecting
By JOHN SCHANBACHER Guest Feature. Writer The world of collecting is a hobby for young and old. There are so many different items that people collect. Most collectors terui to collect older things as thejL were made to last. Also, they' were made out of glass, wood, compressed paper, or different types of metals. As a youngster, I collected match covers. They were readily available and at no cost. I had quite a batch but I didn’t bother to display them as so many collectors do today. Now I still collect but in a different category. Today it’s rulers. I don’t have a very large collection as I haven’t really gone out of my way to procure the out of the ordinary ones. At one time, I had a fruit jar collection which I thought was great until I learned there were close to a thousand different types of this collectible. I had nearly 90 different ones so this was a “drop in the bucket” in collecting jars. When a person begins a collection, you have to consider the space it is going to take to store, display, or to repair or keep in working order. My fruit jars took up considerably a lot of space. Think what 900 jars would take! For those thimble or hatpin collectors, you have the right idea for small apartments or homes. 1 had a cousin in Pennsylvania who had a collection of clocks. He had some that were worth three or four thousand dollars. The local police were always trying to get him to take his collection to a museum. They knew they couldn’t stand guard over his home. He had most of them working and had them set a little slow or fast. Think how it would sound if all were allowed to strike noon NEW LISTING X * HK3BI: Utt 4.69 ACRES — Large family home, over 10,000 sq. ft. of out buildings used for boat storage business. Call now! ner are brother and sister. The Ancil Geiger post 226 of the American Legion of Milford met Monday evening for the 46th anniversary of the Legion with 20 members present. The food for the supper was prepared by a committee from the Legion auxiliary. 30 YEARS AGO, MARCH 10,1955 The main feature of business at the March meeting of the Milford Parent-Teachers’ association held Tuesday evening at the school assembly room was an election of officers for the coming year. They are as listed: Donald Arns, president Mrs. Joseph Judkins, vicepresident Mrs. Richard Smith, secretary Mrs. George Haab, treasurer United Telephone Co. employees began placing dial telephones in the homes of Milford telephone subscribers this week in anticipation of the forthcoming conversion to dial service in the Milford exchange. Captain Ralph R. Disher, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph R. Disher, JJr., Milford, arrived in the U.S. Sunday night after being stationed on the island of Formosa for the past 10 months. 50 YEARS AGO, MARCH 14,1935 Baltimore and Ohio passenger trains were detoured at Milford Junction Saturday morning, passing through Milford over the Big Four tracks on account of a freight train wreck at Gavelton. Dr. and Mrs. V.G. Hursey have gone in for chicken raising in a big way, as they now have about 1,250 chicks in their garage which they have converted into a brooder house.
at the same time! Some were imported from Germany as he had originally came from there himself. A good source for buying collectibles is at an auction. Watch for sales that list antiques and collectibles. There is something for everyone at an auction. I sat down once and listed over 100 items that people collect. Then there are variations? in each category. Take for instance plate collectors. They may specialize and only collect commemorative plates, or only Bavarian, or Haviland. A bottle collector may only collect bottles that have their name on them like Thompson Eye Water, hence Thompson bottles. I’ve seen various displays of collectibles and some have really made an impression on me. However, it would be up to the individual as to the style of display. As to the valuable collectible items, I’d advise theperson not to display them at.all. I have a ■small coin collection but it is in a safety deposit box?. It is not worth getting broken into to have a valuable collection lying around. I’m sorry to say not all people are honest either. Even a friend might take an item if he thought he could turn a profit from it. Collecting is a great pastime. It can be expensive and even heartbreaking if you drop a piece and >it breaks. But I believe there is a sense of satisfaction to have a collection of something that isn’t manufactured anymore. The older items were made well and were made to ’last. This in itself gives me pleasure. Happy is the person who gets a collectible that is in good shape and at a bargain." Codeine Codeine, a derivative of the opium poppy, was the key ingredient in 65 million prescriptions dispensed by American drugstores in 1983, the most recent year for which figures are available, says National Geographic. Other products oi the little flower are morphine, opium, and heroin.
