COMMUNITY SUPPORT was felt throughout the Lakeland area last weekend as the Lady Warriors’ basketball team placed second at state on Saturday. After the semi-state win, banners were placed in Milford, Syracuse, and North Webster to let the Lady Warriors know how proud the Lakeland community has been of them. M-J photographer Leslie Miller took the photo of the banner at the top of this column in Milford. The banners were donated by Jon Sroufe and painted by Dave Butler. Pat Speicher directed traffic as Bill Yahne and Doyle Butler hung the signs. It was a time for pride . . . pride in the girls and in the Lakeland community. NOW IT’S time to shift gears and turn attention to the boys’ basketball program as the Warriors head into sectional play on Friday with all of the support that went to the girls’ team in the past several weeks. "Citizen of the Year?” The deadline is March 18. SCHOOL BOARD members will be doing something a little different the next time they hold a meeting. They will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Milford Elementary/Junior High School cafeteria on March 13. Dr. Kenneth Webster, the new superintendent, said the board meetings will be held every other month in a different community. This will allow school patrons a chance to attend meetings without driving to the central office and will allow the board members to visit the schools at the same time. a Q EVERYTIME THIS reporter sits down to type this week thoughts of the girls’ basketball team come to mind. One reader told us of the tears in her eyes when the bus with the Lady Warriors passed through Milford on Sunday. They were not tears of sadness because the girls lost the championship game but tears of pride because they had
gone so far and had done so much for the good of the school and the community. An older fan remembered when she had played ball in school years ago when bloomers were the style on girls’ basketball players. OBSERVATION: THERE is an old saying that you can’t do anything about the weather but if you wait long enough it will change. That’s all it seems to be doing lately ... changing! The middle of the month everything was off schedule because of the high winds and blowing snow. School was •. dismissed for an entire week because of the weather. Then the snow began to melt and fog returned to the state of Indiana. Many going to Indianapolis on Friday evening or returning to the Lakeland area on Saturday evening found their driving time extended because of the heavy fog. Even with the light rain, which fell from time to time in Indianapolis, the weather was warm and spring-like there basketball fans found only a little snow on the ground. It seemed like spring! In fact, one of the ushers at Market Square told us she went home between games and raked her yard becuase it needed it and because it made her think positive about spring being close at hand. With the warmer temperatures and the rains, the snow in this area melted too and high water
became the thing to watch out for. At the Fort Wayne Semi-State Wawasee fans were told that blowing and drifting snow was closing north-south roads, including SRs 13 and 15. Snow plows were waiting for the bus on SR 13 to insure the Lady Warriors’ safe arrival at Wawasee. A like announcement was made at the state tournament on Saturday. This time fans were advised to return to the Lakeland area via SR 15 as high waters had closed SR 13. And, for our readers in the south, when we got up this morning winter had proved it’s not quite ready to give up. There was a light blanket of snow on the ground. Although, since the boys’ sectional play begins tonight and it always snows during sectional time it was no big surprise for many Hoosiers. It does, however, make one wonder what next week will bring, doesn’t it? — JRS
