World Day of Prayer reminds all to pray
People all over the world will be observing World Day of Prayer on Friday, March k. “Lord, teach us to pray,” says Luke 11:1. One of the finest spiritual foods by which the new creature can “grow unto salvation” is prayer. Jesus is the example. Although he was the perfect son of God, he devoted much time to prayer. If he needed this time, how much more do the people living in this world today need to take the time to pray. David Livingston, the famous missionary to Africa, was found dead on his knees. He died praying. Prayer has always been a precious privilege and great power for all the children of God. Someone once said, “You’ll never rise very far in this world unless you rise from your knees.” Jesus prayed at his baptism (Luke 3:21); in a solitary place (Mark 1:35), in the wilderness (Luke 5:16), all night before choosing the Twelve (Luke 6:12), Before his invitation, “Come unto Me,” (Matthew 11:25-27), at the feeding of the 5,000 (Matthew 14,23), at Caesarea-Philippi (Luke 9:18), before his Transfiguration (Luke 9:28-29), for little children (Matthew 19:13), before the raising of Lazarus (John 22:41-42), in the temple (John 12:27-28), at the last supper (Matthew 26:26-27), for Peter (Luke 22:32), for the disciples (John 17), in Gethsemane (Matthew 26 : 36, 39, 42,44), on the cross (Luke 23:34) and at Emmaus (Luke 24:30). The Bible tells us many things about prayer and how to pray. Jesus’ disciples were much like every one of us. They didn’t really know how to pray. So one day, after Jesus had finished praying, one of his disciples said unto him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” He then taught them (and us) to pray: Our Father which art in Heaven. The first line of this prayer says everything ... if you can call God your Father you are saying you are one of His children and what father doesn’t hear the crv of his child? Hallowed be Thy name. The word hallowed means holy, reverent, set apart. People should never use God’s name in any way but to bring honor and reverence to Him. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. God’s kingdom comes to that group of people, or that individual, and into the lives of those people who let God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. When a person says, “Thy will be done,” he or she should do so with acceptance, surrender and commitment. Give us this day our daily bread. This line begins to focus more on the person doing the praying and his or her needs such as food and clothes and shelter and material things as long as they don’t become that person’s goals in life. God wants us to depend on Him. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Having asked God to help us to continue to live, we immediately ask His forgiveness for not having lived better. The person saying this prayer confesses that he or she does not deserve to live, that it is only by God’s mercy that he or she can hope to live. He demands that we hold the same merciful attitude toward our fellowmen which we ask Him to have toward us. How many times does a person say, “Lord, you forgive my sins against you, as I forgive others their sins against me?” Is that what the people of today want? Would you really want God to forgive you only as much as you forgive others? God has a big heart. He will forgive anybody who wants forgiveness and who will be forgiving to others. But let us not expect God to forgive us if we are not forgiving and willing to forgive one another. Many people, in praying the Lord’s Prayer will use, “and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive

those who trespass against us,” here. The word “trespass” means to transgress or sin. This is why most of the translations will use debts or sins here. Tresspass was the old English word used many years ago, but has changed meaning to us now. Probably the best translation to use here would be, “and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.” And lead us not into temptation. The word “temptation” does not mean what it meant in 1611 when the King James Version was translated. It means “testing.” “Don’t test us too much,’ is what Jesus is teaching in this prayer. “Don’t put too heavy a load on us, Lord. Father, don’t make it too hard for me to carry the cross. Help me.” God does not tempt num, but he permits man to be tempted by Satan. This petition is an appeal that we may not be tempted above our strength and that with every temptation, there may be away of escape. (I Corinthians 10:13) With God’s help, as Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” But deliver us from evil. This actually means deliver us from the evil one — the devil. God knows the weakness of the person praying and how much he or she needs help to be delivered from the devil. The devil is trying to get everyone. He has bombarded all of us with burdens and problems. Sometimes each and everyone of us wants to throw our hands up and quit. Psalm 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength. Those who pray can be sure of His help, if they are doing their part. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. This is omitted from a number of manuscripts and is placed as a footnote in others. But what a message it is! It seems as if the Heavenly Choir joins the redeemed of the earth and the congregation of the Lord to add the final lines of the Lord’s Prayer. When saying the Lord’s Prayer, there is worship, submission, petition, confession, dependence and faith. Many have questioned what position a person should be in when saying a prayer. There is no specific position. The Bible tells of people praying while standing, sitting, bowing, on one’s face and on one’s knees. It is the heart that counts. Luke 21-36 tells us when to pray. Here Jesus tells the people that they should pray always that they may escape many of the things that will come to pass. Christians should pray that they will be able to stand before the Son of God saved, rather than condemned. Roman’s 12:12 has good advice for those who pray. Paul tells the Christians they are to continue in constant prayer. The Living Bible says we are to be “prayerful always.” These Roman Christians knew the value of prayer, as many of them were being persecuted for their faith. When to pray? Anytime. Jesus prayed early in the morning (Mark 1:35). David prayed at noon (Psalm 55:17). Peter and John prayed late in the afternoon (Acts 3:1). The Psalmist prayed in the evening (Psalm 141:2). Paul and Silas prayed at midnight (Acts 16:25). Who can find a virtuous woman? She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

one brought a friend last month and then there were two. Two church members each won one more. Now don’t you see? Two plus two equals four! Four church members worked early and late. Each one brought one and now there are eight. Have you got the message, pointed and true? Come on folks, we’ve got a job to do. For you see, these eight church members, if they double as before, in just seven weeks would have 1,024! In this little jingle there is a lesson true.
