Warriors win, Kobie gets record

By CHRIS CAULEY Sports Editor I Bremen coach Dean Foster probably knew his Lions were in trouble as they ran into the locker room at halftime. The Lions made 12 of 19 shots from the floor in the first two quarters of their game with Wawasee Friday night, but the Lions still trailed by one at halftime, 29-28. “It was either a turnover or a score,” Foster said later of the Lions’ first half play. It was, in fact, pretty much that way for all four quarters. Bremen made over 50 percent of its field goal attempts in the game (22-for-40), but the Lions also-made 25 turnovers and the net result was a 70-57 Wawasee victory. “Turnovers killed us,” Foster said. “They’ve killed us about the last 3-4 games. Until recently we’d been averaging less turnovers than our opponents, but now we’ve made 52 turnovers in our last two games. It’s been a shambles.” Brooks Kobie also contributed in no small degree to Bremen’s undoing, particularly in the second half. The sharp-shooting senior forward tallied 22 of his game-high 34 points in the latter 16 minutes, helping the Warriors pull away down the stretch. Kobie made 11 of 22 shots from the floor in the game and 12 of 14 free throw tries. As a team, the Warriors finished 24-for-28 from the charity stripe, including 16-for-20 in the fourth quarter. “The big guys have those games where they go to the foul line a.lot, and tonight he got to the foul line,” Foster said of Kobie.

“We rely on Kobie to do a lot of things for us,” said Warrior

coach John Wysong. “A couple times in the first half he forced shots, but he constantly kept pressure on them defensively by taking the ball to the basket.” Not incidentally, Koble’s 34 points raised his season total to 507 points, a new one-season record at Wawasee. The old mark of 505 was set in the 1971-72 season by Jeff Hughes. Kobie has averaged just over 25 points per game this season. “That (the record) is nice to have out of the way during the regular season,” Wysong said. “For him to set a scoring record is pretty unusual for as deliberate as we play. We don’t rack up a lot of points.” When they weren’t turning the ball over, the Lions used their height advantage over the Warriors to full advantage, especially in the first half. Taking the ball inside and scoring several times on rebound baskets, Bremen led by 26-21 with less than three minutes remaining in the second quarter. Then, however, the Warriors’ motor started running. A fullcourt press led to several steals and fast-break baskets as Wawasee scored eight of the last 10 points in the first half for a 29-28 lead. The Warriors continued to run and gun and play pressure defense in the second half. Turnovers, meanwhile, kept Bremen from fully utilizing its inside game. “The thing was, in the second half, it seemed like every turnover led to an easy score,” said Dean Foster. Some of those easy scores came on layups after the Warriors stole the ball. Even when they didn’t steal it, the Warriors

wasted little time in going to work on offense.

“Bremen plays a game where you can’t be real, real patient on offense because they constantly trap,” John Wysong noted. “So you have to look to attack and be more aggressive on offense.” Junior forward Carey Jones, the Lions’ leading scorer in the game with 16 points, banked a shot off the glass early in the fourth quarter as Bremen closed to within two points (44-42). Then the parade to the free throw line began. Bremen outscored Wawasee by 12-10 from the field in the final quarter, but the Warriors won the battle of the free throws by 16-5. The Warriors also won the war, 70-57, raising their season record to 13-7 entering the sectional. The victory also enabled Wawasee to finish 5-2 in the NLC, tied for second place with Concord and Plymouth. The defeat dropped Bremen to 5-14 overall and 1-6 in the NLC. HARDWOOD NOTES - “I think the big difference in the game was their 25 turnovers and us hitting our free throws down the stretch,” Wysong said. Missed free throws had cost the Warriors dearly the week before in an overtime loss to Westview, but this time the team came through in the clutch. The Warriors stepped to the line in a one-and-one situation seven times in the fourth quarter, and they converted those opportunities into 13 points. .. Os his team’s mistakes, Bremen coach Dean Foster said, “We’ve been playing a lot of young kids most of the year, but it’s the time of the year when those kids should be getting older.” Juniors Carey Jones (6-2) and Mark Grove (6-5) will return

The Warriors’ win capped what has been a surprisingly successful season, at least to many. “John does a super job,” praised Foster. “At the end of last year I never would have guessed he’d have the season he had.” Four of five starters graduated from Wawasee’s 1983-84 team. WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a matter of days Major League baseball teams will begin playing exhibition games. Major League baseball should add a few teams soon, and probably will. That’s the only way for top baseball to expand. Playing 162 games a year, it’s very hard for anyone to establish a new league. This year players and management will again be negotiating. In the last decide management has given up so much, to avoid strikes, there isn’t much more to give up. Thus there’s a mood among many players, and owner-ship-that a strike must be avoided in 1985. March 8. For a month most clubs will play every day, occasionally a training game and sometimes two exhibition games with a split squad. The regular season begins the second week in April, after these thirty or so (or fewer) exhibition games. If it’s delayed by a strike or strike threat, stemming from more demands from players, public opinion would likely turn much more strongly against the players this time. Four years ago, surprisingly, striking youngsters already averaging in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for nine months of play, didn’t cost the game much fan support.
