Snow and ice blamed for rash of accidents
Snow and ice on the roads were to blame for many of the following area accidents investigated by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deparmtent that did more property damage to area mailboxes and fences than anything else. Monday, Feb. 11, 5:55 p.m. a property damage accident was reported when David J. Schlabach of r 1 Syracuse lost control of his ’72 Ford in the ice and snow running off the road into a fence owned by Stanly Hoopingainer of Syracuse. Damages to the Schlabach auto and the fence were individually estimated at between S2OO-sl,ooo. Also reported on Monday at 6 p.m. was an accident in Milford, one-fourth mile west on CR 200W at 1350 N. Tony J. Fisher of r 1 Nappanee ran through a pile of snow that had been plowed into the road from a driveway in front of the Wayne Miller residence in Milford. As Fisher hit the snow he spun around and hit two mailboxes owned by the Ada Miller and Allen McDonald. He then drove into a fence owned by Wayne Miller. Damage to both mailboxes was under S2OO and damage to the fence was estimated at S2OO-sl,ooo. A snowmobile collision occurred on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 3:45 p.m. when Scott Knispel of r 2 Leesburg was traveling north near 300E with an occupant on his 1980 Skidoo snowmobile when he hit a parked vehicle owned by Donald Kintzel of Warsaw.

been buzzing all week as excited Warrior fans have been calling relatives living in other states to tell them about the girls’ basketball team. I. • . . And, calls have been coming to Indiana too. This editor received one such call on Monday morning. It came from Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and carried good luck wishes to the Lady Warriors from Amy Bucher’s grandparents, Wayne and Irene Bucher; and from her aunts and uncles, Don and Peg Bucher and Cindy and Stan Harper. All are r 5 Syracuse residents. Amy is also a member of the girls’ basketball team and is a forward. She is the daughter of Junior and Sandy Bucher of Henry Street. THERE ARE stories out there on each of the Lady Warriors, each of whom is having a veryspecial week. This scribe joins 'the residents of the Lakeland area in sending good luck wishes to Sandy Payne, Anita Swope, Christy Speicher, Michelle Harter, Lori Galloway, Sheila Kleinrichert, Karla Stichter, Ann Vitaniemi, Becca Stiver and Belinda Whitridge, as well as the two girls listed above. DAY cards may arrive late for many sweethearts due to the extreme weather conditions, but not for those on Leon Newman’s route. Working for the Milford post office, Leon Newman, and his daughter, Andrea Weybright, in a team effort, saw to it that another
Norman was driving a truck equipped with a sand box spreader heading east on 450 N when he told county police he turned the corner with his snowplow and was going to back up to clear snow from the intersection. He looked and didn’t see anyone and started to back up when he heard the horn of the vehicle driven by Arnett. Arnett told the investigating officer she had pulled up to the corner and stopped. She saw the truck sitting there and she didn’t realize he was going to back up. She attempted to drive around him when he backed up and hit her 1981 Olds. Damages to each vehicle was set at between S2OO-SI,OOO.
in 365 days. Freven Conductor Ellen, owned by Fred and Pat Beer, is the 237th member of the same club. She is also the daughter of Wapa Arlinda Conductor and produced 23,533 pounds of milk, 4.5 percent butterfat and 1,063 pounds butterfat in 322 days. To qualify, a two-year-old must be sired by a Select Sires bull and must produce over 1,000 pounds of butterfat in her first lactation. MABC-Select Sires awarded both Beers with a certificate and rosette for this accomplishment.
day would -not go by with undelivered mail. On the morning of Feb. 14, Andrea set forth in her mail car, as usual, to make the deliveries. A slight twist to this day was the assistance of her father,'-Leon, on his snowmobile. Whichever roads were impassable by car were handled by the snowmobile. Through this joint effort, the 63-mile route was covered in hours; only one hour longer than usual for that particular route. Over 90 percent of the mail made it to the proper destination thanks to their ingenuity. A bit tired from the long journey, and tipping over once or twice on the snowmobile, Leon was able to take his well deserved vacation as planned on Feb. 15. THIS COLUMN received a letter last week from Gloria Cudney of South Bend. She states: When I subscribed to ybur paper for my mother, Ruth Speicher Crepeau, in December of 1983, one of the first issues she received had a picture of her old fmaily home in Milford Junction submitted by Tom Speicher.

Needless to say, she was very excited about it. My mother, 91, and her sister. Hazel Speicher Winkler, 96, are the only remaining membrs of the family group shown in the picture. Since that picture was shown, my aunt Hazel Speicher Winkler lost her youngest son, with whom she lived, and is now in a nursing home in South Bend recovering from a fractured hip. Her mind is still very active and she has many happy memories of her days in Milford and the junction. However, she is quite lonesome as her other two children live in Texas and California. My purpose in writing this letter is in hopes that some of your readers might remember Hazel and find the time to send a greeting to her. Her address is: Hazel Winkler, Regency Palace, 52654 North Ironwood Road, South Bend, IN 46635. THEN CAME this letter: “Would you mind answering my questions about my relatives?
“1 was born in Milford on February 22, 1893. My grandfather was Milton Groves. Uncles were Wilbur Groves, Avery Groves, Albert Groves, and an aunt and cousin. Belle and Eloise Pinkerton. I am also related to the late Ike Groves and Hattie Gibson. My mother was a Feikner and I had lots of relatives in Milford. “I would enjoy hearing from you.” If anyone remembers the people listed above Mrs. Lura Elkerton’s address is 1013 Meeker St., Fort Morgan, Colo. OBSERVATION: BUD and I have done a lot of traveling since we’ve been married but I can honestly say there is no place like home. Quite often after we have been to a big city like Chicago, New Orleans or San Francisco, someone will comment on how small Milford is and how large those cities are. We’ll take Milford any day. There is a caring here. A helping hand that is not found in a city.
An example: Last Tuesday morning I was on my way to work and hit a slick spot. The ice won and I ended up in a bank of snow in Stewart Coy’s front yard. Stew was just leaving for work and said I could ride to town with him. Before Stew and I could walk to his car, Ron Barley, a former neighbor who now resides in Milford, stopped. He said they could get me but. . P GJ is Before I knew it, a man I don’t even know stopped with his truck and tried to help. Then two of the Beers stopped. A school bus driver on his way past stopped to see if we needed more help.

We waved the bus driver on and a short time later the car was out and I was on my way to Milford, a, very grateful driver. Having missed the trees on the south side of the road and landing in the Coys’ front yard was something in itself. Someone noted that the Good Lord must have been with me! My answer was no, he took over after I lost control. The object is that in a big city who would have cared about my car being it that bank of snow? Who would have helped? Here, not one vehicle passed-without the driver stopping and offering help. That’s a caring community. Thanks again fellows for all the help — JRS
