Defending champs favored at state
Continued from page 13 try to stop us inside we can go outside," said Rushville coach Cinda Brown. “I’m hoping that maybe we’re a little bit quicker, but they have a size advantage on us with (Sandy) Grabowski. She’s really a mule on the boards." Grabowski, a three-year starter at forward, averages 18.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, 4 steals and 2.3 blocked shots per game. She’s 5-11. However, Crown Point’s best player is 5-10 senior Anne Kvachkoff, who was voted MVP of the Final Four tournament a year ago. She’s a Miss Basketball candidate this year, averaging 23.2 points, 7/4 steals, 10.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists. She will play collegiately at Purdue. Coach Tom May’s Bulldogs are minus three starters from last year’s state champions, including Nancy Cowan, a firstteam all-stater in ’B3-’B4. She is playing now at Kentucky. Crown Point’s starters, in addition to Kvachkoff and Grabowski, include Collin Wirtz, a 5-10 junior averaging 9 points and 6 rebounds. Senior forward Penny Thomas averages 9 points, and junior guard Rachel Gabato averages 5 points and 7 assists. Crown Point’s opponents, the Rushville Lady Lions, have a 19-game winning streak entering the weekend. Even so, Coach Cinda Brown says that inconsistency has plagued the team this year. “We’re yet to play as well as we’re capable of playing,” she said. “We’ll play excellent basketball of stretches of five or

Calling the shots
AFTER PREDICITING BASKETBALL GAMES for the past two months, our special prognositcation panel has set the next several months aside to rest up for the next football season. But there is some unfinished business before we close out this portion of the prediction panel. It should be noted that history was made in this basketball section of picks. First off, never has any panel member fallen from the heights of victory to the agony of defeat like Rich Rhodes has. Rhodes was on top of the pile when football season concluded this year, and now, after the basketball season, he is in the basement. I can see Tom Charles right now, talking with a patient of his in the Pennsylvania Mental Health Hospital, laughing at Rhodes for his terrible finish. Now as the predicting season is over, lets look at the final standings one more time:

We’ve been known to let people come back on us.” Like Wawasee, Rushville is a team without any superstars, but one which prides itself on its balance. Subrina Davis, a 5-10 senior center, is Rushville’s leading scorer and the player that the Lions look to for big baskets. “We call her, ‘Big Basket Bri,’ ” Brown said. “She’s won several games for us this season with last-second shots.” Davis averages 14.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 6.5 steals. Kris Harpring, a 5-9 senior forward, averages 7.8 points and 6 rebounds, and Missi Nelson, a 5-11 freshman forward, averages 10.2 points and 7.3 rebounds. One guard is Ann Moster, a 5-3 senior who averages 9.5 points and leads the team in assists. The other guard has a local connection. She is Suzzanne Hauntz. The 5-7 senior could be playing for the Wawasee Lady Warriors, it develops. Her father, Tony Hauntz, worked at a Dana Corporation plant in Rushville until about a year ago. Swimmers hope to advance to state meet
Although nothing is official, it appears that Wawasee’s 200 medley relay team will advance to this weekend’s state meet in Indianapolis. The relay team, consisting of Steve Rozow, Jon Shoemaker, Nils Haugland and Rob Jewson placed second in the Elkhart Sectional last week. “As a team we did not swim bad at all,” admitted coach Tim Caldwell. “We had a goal of finishing third, and that’s were we finished.” The Warriors, scoring 148 points, placed third while Northern Lakes Conference foe, Warsaw, placed second in the sectional with 236 points. Central was the team champion, scoring 255 points. Even though it seems likely that the relay team will advance into the state meet, the fate of Jon Shoemakers still looms over head. The outstanding senior did not have one of his better days at the sectional when he placed third in the 100-yard butterfly. “Jon just did not have one of his better days,” said Caldwell. “He was not strong, like he would have been if he wasn’t sick. But he still has a shot at state.” According to information provided by Caldwell, he is expecting to hear how many Wawasee swimmers will advance by Thursday evening.

Much has been written about the “balance” of the Wawasee Lady Warriors’ basketball team, and justifiably so. The five starters all ■ average between 8 and 12 points. It has also been noted that because of Wawasee’s “team” concept of play, the Lady Warriors’ individual statistics are not as impressive as what they might be under a different (albeit, worse) system. How unselfish are they? Well, nearly lost in all the semi-state championship hoopla was that senior guard Anita Swope broke the 9 Wawasee girls’ career scoring record. The odd thing was that she wasn’t even aware she’d broken it until it was mentioned to her in a 1 post-game interview. s “I did?” she asked. “No, I didn’t know that. That’s news to me.” Swope, who teams with senior Sandy Payne to give the Warriors a t dynamic duo in the backcourt, entered Saturday’s semi-final game 1 against Kokomo just four points shy of Lonnie Black’s career scoring record of 629 points. Swope scored two field goals in the first quarter to tie the record, then broke it by swishing a 17-foot jumper with 5:48 remaining in the first half. And, as said, she didn’t even know she was close to the record. “We’re very unselfish,” she said of the Warrior team. “We like to play as a team and not rely on one person all the time. That helps our all-round balance.” There’s that word again: balance. It was there for all to see at the semi-state. Swope scored consistently, 17 in the first game 54-47 win •» over Kokomo and 19 in the Warriors’ 52-43 victory over Bishop Dwenger. She was 14-for-25 from the field. y Sandy Payne, the Warriors’ career leader in assists (Swope is see cond) shot only 12 times Saturday and scored just 11 points, but she n helped run the Warrior offense and keyed several opposition turnovers r with her defensive skills, especially when Wawasee used the full-court d press. Coach Dale Brannock describes Payne as “a very heady player lt who holds ’em together.” d Another senior, Christy Speicher, scored 12 points in the first game and only three points in the second, but she was the Warriors’ s leading rebounder in the Dwenger game with 10. e That, the Warriors’ strength inside scoring and on the boards, was d something that I hadn’t heard about. Saturday was the first time I’d it seen the team play, and I was impressed with how Speicher, Lori Galloway and Michelle Harter muscled around inside. h Galloway and Harter, in particular, laid some bone-crushing picks on Kokomo players in the first game, knocking players to the floor on a e couple occasions in what was a loosely officiated contest (the opposite y of game two, as Lori Galloway would attest).. The Warriors’ offense in that win over Kokomo was like artwork in motion: a constant series of picks. Players without the ball never seemed to stop moving. It reminded me of Bobby Knight’s offense at IU, but Dale Brannock disclaimed the comparison. He uses such words as “shuffle,” 0 “circle” and “City” (after Michigan City) in describing the offense, r He refers to the picks as “down-picks” and “cross-picks” and says his e coaching philosophy was influenced by Ike Tallman, who he worked ■t with at both Muncie Central and Penn. e The Warriors had to change their offense against Bishop Dwenger s in the championship game as the Saints played a zone the entire game while Kokomo, for some reason, had stayed in a man-to-man in the : first game even though the defense was getting “picked” apart. e Kokomo coach Mike McCroskey said that Wawasee’s physical

style of play was a difference in the game. “In the fourth quarter we told a couple people they better start pushing back,” he said. “The first three quarters we let them just beat us around.” It also didn’t help Kokomo any that they made only 9 of 18 free throws while Wawasee canned 24 of 30. Too, many of the Wildkats’ 22 turnovers came early in the game when the Warriors forged ahead. But the Warriors are not mainly a physical, half-court kind of team.' - v “We’ve got to get out and run,” Anita Swope said. “I think we’ve got people who can rebound and then the speed to get it downcourt.” The Warriors took a 24-21 lead into halftime of the championship game against Bishop Dwenger. Then came an interesting third quarter. The Saints, a third-quarter team all year, scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 29-24 lead. Earlier in the post-season tournament, Dwenger had come from nine points behind to beat Heritage, 11 points down to beat Jay County, and they’d trailed Bremen by 10 at one time in the first game of the Semi-State. The Saints and Warriors were heading in opposite directions. The Saints were hot, the Warriors were not. In fact, they seemed to be almost sleepwalking through the early minutes of the second half. “So much for balance,” I thought to myself. ‘Somebody better take charge out there.” Somebody turned out to be the Warriors’ junior forward, Michelle Harter. She scored on two consecutive jumpers from around the key, igniting a 12-point Warrior run that turned the five-point deficit into a 36-29 lead. Payne and Swope made steals during the streak and converted them into a pair of layups, Payne hit from the top of the key and substitute center Sheila Kleinrichert scored on an excellent effort, a rebound basket while falling backwards. “We come out slow in the third quarter,” Swope said. “When Michelle hit those baskets, everybody started getting back into the rhythm of it and we started hitting again.” “They’d been yelling at me all night to shoot the ball,” said Harter. “I finally got my confidence when I hit that first one. I knew we needed to score.” Coach Brannock was not surprised by the Warriors’ comeback. “These kids have been behind before, but they hang tough,” the coach said. “It’s not me yelling and telling them to do it. They do it on their own. They’re in charge.” The Warriors’ semi-state championship avenged a lackluster performance at Fort Wayne a year ago, a performance the players bad not forgotten. “It gave us a lot of incentive,” Swope said somewhat emphatically. “We played bad last year and we wanted to come back and show the people that we don’t play like that. That was just something that happened.” This week the Lady Warriors are preparing for their trip to Indianapolis and Market Square Arena. It’s the chance of a lifetime for a high school basketball player in Indiana: a chance to win the state championship. “I told the kids, ‘This will undoubtedly be the most exciting week of your life,’ ” Brannock said. Maybe the Wawasee girls can follow the lead of Warsaw’s boys’ team and make next week even more exciting.

For those traveling to Market Square Arena for the girls’ state basketball finals, Dale Brannock has suggested a route which will accommodate Wawasee High School fans. Leaving Kosciusko County on SR 13 south, travel to SR 37 south of Elwood. From there, proceed to Interstate 69 to Interstate 465 South, and then to Interstate 70 West. While on 1-70 West, exit on Ohio Street, and Ohio Street will take you to Market Square Arena. According to Brannock, 1-70 is well marked and motorists should have no problems locating the playing arena.
