Bowling Called ‘World’s Best Kept Secret’ by Chuck Pezzano Roger Tessman, executive-secretary treasurer of the American Bowling Congress, doubles as president of the federation Internationale des Quilleurs, the international amateur bowling organization. The FIQ has Deen around a long time, since 1952, and the recent addition ot two more countries. India and New Zealand, brought the membership total to an impressive 71 nations. After a month long tour that took him to most parts of the world, Tessman had to admit, "Bowling is one of the best kept secrets in the world." But he hastened to add that many programs are underway, to let the rest of the world know what the bowling world already knows, that there are more than 100 million bowlers actively rolling their little globes somewhere on that big globe called earth. / One of tne goals is to become part of the Olympic Games. More than 40 countries have Olympic committee recognition, including the ABC and Women’s International Bowling Congress here in the United States. Bowling is a girt of the World Games, the Pan American ames and the Asian Games. There are such amateur events as the AMF World Cup, a 20 year veteran of the international amateur scene and one that draws the best men and women from close to 50 countries. Tessman notes? “The interest has always been there, the drive to make bowling an Olympic sport, but it seems as though not enough horses were available to pull the wagon. Since the United States is one of the stronger horses, we have to take the lead.” The groundwork is underway and ABC and WIBC rules have been expanded to include the standards Olympic recognition demands. Help is on the way to improve high school and collegiate bowling. Plans are being made to give any qualified bowler in any bowling center the opportunity to represent the United States in one of the many various international competitions we seem destined to take part in or conduct in the near future. s Tessman, an eloquent speaker, is also a good listener, and during his trip abroad, he kept his ears and mind wide open. “After all, we’ve been around bowling since 1895. That’s a long time, maybe too long, because we might have a tendency to think we know it all, without trying to understand the bowling problems of other countries around the world.” Tessman is determined to build a staff, to educate, to create more knowledge and more cooperation so that this huge bowling family can do the most for its adherents. International sports officials, including Olympic committees, are beginning to recognize bowling. So maybe it won’t be too king before it no longer is one of sports hidden amateur giants. Yet, as Tessman emphasized, “The sport is for the players, not for the administrators." And that will be proven in the not too distant future when bowlers will be going for the gold, with full blessings from their native lands.
