Lady Warriors rip two foes, await showdown at Bremen
Whitko It was bound to happen sooner or later; the Lady Warriors ran into the stall game. Sensing there was no way his Wildcats could play with Wawasee’s potent running game for four quarters, Whitko coach Tom Wood put his team in a patient slow-down offense for most of Thursday’s contest at Wawasee. While the tactic didn’t keep the Lady Warriors from rolling to a 47-24 win, their 14th straight, it did keep the Wildcats close for most of the first half. After controlling the opening tip, Whitko’s Sheila Ousley, Barb Kelsey and Kim Gregory worked the ball around the perimter for nearly a minute and a half before turning the ball over on a bad pass. The Lady Warriors took the ball to the hoop on their first possession, but Anita Swope’s r jumper was off the mark, Whitko controlled the rebound and the Wildcats .went back into their stall. Another turnover gave the ball back to Wawasee with 5:37 on the clock. This time, Christy Speicher completed a three-point play to give Wawasee a 3-0 lead with 5:24 left in the opening period. The ball-control offense didn’t stop Wawasee from building a 9-3 lead at the first break, but it took its toll in other ways. Senior floor leader Sandy

Payne picked up three fouls in the first six. minutes of play and was replaced by junior Becca Stiver. Both Payne and Swope appeared to be frustrated at times by the Whitko strategy as they tried to overplay in the backcourt and pick off passes. “I thought that we looked a little frustrated in the beginning,” said Wawasee coach Dale Brannock. “I don’t think the kids quite knew what to do at first. But they made the adjustments they had to.” The Wildcats pulled within three, 12-9, at one point in the second quarter. But Swope and Michelle Harter traded jumpers and gave the Lady Warriors an 18-11 lead at the half. The second half was all Wawasee as Swope had 10 points, Speicher eight and Harter five in the last 16 minutes. Wawasee led 33-16 at the end of the third quarter. “I was glad that they used this against us,” said Brannock. ‘‘We may see this* at some point down the line as well. It was good exposure for us. Swope had 19 points to lead the offense. Speicher added 13 points and Harter chipped in with nine. Payne, who played the second half with three fouls, picked up four points. Speicher was the game’s top rebounder with eight. The Lady Warriors travel to Bremen on Thursday night and host West Noble on Saturday night.

exercise. Other Warriors in the top three of their events were Jeanine Gunn, third in vaulting; Julie Schmahl, second on beam; Tressa Littleton, third in floor exercise; and Paula Smith, third on the uneven bars. Smith, a sophomore, was moved up from the intermediate team to fill Angie Graff’s spot. Graff was injured in the first meet of the year and may not return the rest of the year. “Moving Paula up is a good move,” said assistant coach Debbie Haab. “We needed another optional person and I think it will challenge Paula.” The team may also be without the services of Gunn, who injured her arm during her floor exercise routine. However, the extent of her injury is not known at this time. The team is back in action on Thursday with a meet at Concord. Action begins at 6 p.m.

Sports comment — Calling the shots CHARLES
AFTER 16 MONTHS AT THE MAILJOURNAL, the time has come for this reporter to bid farewell to the Wawasee area. This Friday marks my last day on the job and brings to an end what has been a pleasant association with the Lakeland Community School Corporation. Although I’m leaving this area and moving to eastern Pennsylvania, I’ll be thinking about Wawasee in the upcoming weeks as the wrestlers, both basketball teams and the swimmers head into post-season tournaments. It has been a real treat to watch these athletes work hard during the year, and I’ll miss seeing how that work pays off. Perhaps most of all, however, I will miss the friends I’ve made through my work. To all of the coaches at Wawasee High School, Dr. Howard Hull, Sally Baker and Hal Traviolia, I would.like to say a big “thank you” for the many ways in which you’ve made my job easier. You have made me feel at home in this community and that has been much appreciated. ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP There has been some talk in the area regarding Brooks Koble’s chances of becoming Wawasee’s all-time leading scorer by the end of the year. Well, the lanky senior has a long way to go to accomplish that feat. As of now, he needs to score 387 points to catch Jeff Long’s record of 1,050. With seven games left in the regular season, that appears to be an impossible task. Last week’s winners in the Big Ten were Ohio State, lowa, Illinois and Purdue. In high school action, Concord, East Noble, Plymouth, Warsaw and Wawasee were winners. Big Ten games on this week’s schedule are Ohio State at Illinois, Indiana at Purdue, Michigan State at Michigan and Wisconsin at lowa. In the NLC, Whitko is at Wawasee, Memorial at Warsaw, Goshen at Penn, Plymouth at North Wood, Rochester at Concord and Bremen at Glenn. This week’s guest picker preferred to remain anonymous. All the information we could scrape together about the disguised soothsayer is that he plays football and attends a college with a basketball team that wins very few of its contests.
