Genealogy of Syracuse co -founder, Henry Ward, unearthed
By JACK ELAM Henry Ward; of the Samuel Crosson and Henry Ward duo that co-founded Syracuse, Indiana, has been referred to as the “Mystery Man” of the founders. Much has been written (including an outstanding, recently published, History of Syracuse, + by Ronald and Joan Sharp) about men covering their activities in the earlvxdays of * Syracuse. Up to Ih/s time, nothing was known/of-’Mr. Ward m before he arrives in Turkey Creek Township in t|ie 1830’s. The book named our Henry Ward and his family all the way back to the first Ward of this ancestoral line to settle in America An early., ancestor, William Ward, coming from England is the first of this family-line to live, in America. According to family tradition, he came from Yorkshire or -Derbyshire, England. He is recorded in America, as early as 1639, when his name appears on land documents at Sudbury, Massachusetts. His second wife Joanna, who was only two years older than Obadiah’s eldest child, survived him. Mr. Ward and his first wife Mary had a total of thirteen children. The next generation of this line is represented by the third child of Obadiah and Mary Ward. His name was Obadiah, too. This Obadiah Ward was born September 18, 1672, in Marlboro, * Massachusetts. He and his second wife had six children, making a total of nine. This Obadiah Ward held the distinction of being the first of his line to be bom in America. Representing the fourth generation is the third child of Obadiah and Elizabeth Ward. His name was Jabez. Jabez Ward was born in Marlboro, * Massachusetts in 1707. His widow Phebe died in 1775. Jabez Sand Phebe had eight children. The popular name of Obadiah again appears in this Ward line making generation number five. West Stockbridge, Massachusetts which is located near the New York state line. In West Stockbridge he served as a Magistrate. Obadiah died July 10, 1816, in his seventy-fifth year. His wife Molly died September 22, 1807 in her fifty-eighth year. They had two children. Generation number six is headed up by another Obadiah Ward. The eldest child of Obadiah and Molly Ward was born April 11, 1771. In 1791 he ’married Lydia Smith, daughter of Amos Smith of New Marlboro. Obadiah and Lydia moved to West Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1802 about the same time that his father made the same move.

Lydia died in West Stockbridge, February 15, 1828. Obadiah was stilHjving in 1851. They had eight children. The second child of Obadiah and Lydia Ward brings us to generation number seven. This child is HENRY WARD. Hepry was born May 1, 1799 in New\ Marlboro, Massachusetts. Tfie young lad moved with the family to West Stockbridge when he was three years old. Henry Ward * “went to Indiana, married there and died at Syracuse, Kosciusko * Co., in that state September 1846, leaving no issue. He was surveyor of the public lands many years, and at the time of his death, Judge of the court for the above mentioned county. ”
