Ralph Neff tries to make others happy
By MARK WEINSTEIN Staff Writer Life has not always been pleasant for Ralph Neff, a lifelong resident of Milford. Sure he has experienced great joy, but most recently, he has been suffering with bouts of depression. Still, you will never hear him complaining about any misfortune. The main reason for his depression, according to Neff, is lonliness. You see, the youngster-at-heart lost his wife, Grace, nearly four years ago. And he has not been exactly the same since. “My lifestyle changed drastically when I became a widower.” said Neff. “It can get pretty lonely, but I try to work around that.” Now, instead of concentrating on making his wife happy, he centers his thoughts and actions around others. That is what makes Neff the happiest. And for a gentleman who has 85 years of experience under his belt, he is a shining example for others in the community. His enthusiasm about life, and honesty with people is as characteristic about Neff as the sun is hot in the summer. Neff’s enthusiasm is evident by his work-a-holic lifestyle. He always seems to be working, it just depends on the warmth of the weather as to where. In the summer and spring mon : ths. Neff can be found at Milford’s Big Boulder Golf Course. While on the links, Neff cuts as much grass as he possibly can. Once that has been accomplished. he rests. "They asked me if I wanted to come and work for them one shimmer. and of course. I said yes,”
Achievement books due Feb. 1
i By RONALD W. HOYT -H and Youth Kosciusko County 4-H members who plan to submit achievement record books in 1985 should have begun work on those records by now. Many 4-H’ers find that Christmas vacation is a super time to get their 4-H
recalled Neff. “But I laid my cards out on the table first. I told them that I can’t do as much as I once could. They understood and let me do as much as I could.’’ Even though Neff thouroughly enjoys his work at Big Boulder, there’s another side to the energetic elder. He also works at Milford’s Lakeland Loving Care Nursing facility. While at the home, Neff makes and serves coffee to the residents. He holds some additional maintenance positions, and then visits with the residents. “I enjoy working here because I can do a job and still enjoy others,” said Neff. “They let me do pretty much what I want and that is fun.” But Neff’s service to the nursing home facility goes far beyond his making and pouring of the coffee. He is a friend to the residents and seems to brighten up everybody’s day. Although Neff keeps busy with .work responsibilities, he finds plenty of time sol 6 rest and relaxation. According to the former school bus driver, when he is not working, he can easily fall asleep or go watch his grandchildren play athletic events. “I have never been into recreational events, much less athletic events.” said Neff. “But L enjoy going to watch my granddaughter play basketball. I just saw her play last night in Nappanee." A member of Milford's Christian Church, Neff, has slowed down his stride over the past few years. Still, in his heart, he is moving as fast as he ever did. "I just take things one day at a time and try to be a good fellow,” said Neff.
That seems to be very easy for him.
