At Zion Chapel — Mosciline Deaton has been a teacher for over 60 years
By JO STURGIS Staff Writer A young man recently asked Mosciline Deaton of Syracuse, “How many summers have you lived?” while she was eating in a local restaurant. It is easy to see why the man would ask Mrs. Deaton such a thing after talking with her. ■ K. ■ Mrs. Deaton is a spry 83-year-old, despite her recent bout with sickness and an extended stay in the hospital. . She hasJgflTa member of the Zion Chapel United Brethren cflth at the corner of Syracuse-Webster road and all her life. She hasn’t just been a member, eiWer; she has been an active participator in the church’s activities. Don Ross is now serving as the pastor at the church. Through-out the years, Mrs. Deaton has served as a Sunday School teacher for over 60 years. She said she mostly taught the “little folks” and enjoyed them the most. She has also served as the church secretary and started playing the piano in the church at age 10. She retired from playing the piano in 1980. At that time her grahddaughter, Robin McCaula, took her placet the keys. Mrs. Deaton said it-would have been unbearable to give up playing the piano to anyone except her granddaughter. Her other activities have included serving as church librarian and on a host of committees. Mrs. Deaton is the oldest member of the church and said only a very few of the original families are left. “The congregation is completely new.” The church hasn’t really grown that much, though. Mrs. Deaton said they have added a few classrooms and remodeled, but that has been about the extent of the changes. Mrs. Deaton doesn’t think the church has changed
Baldwins report from Africa
A letter was recently received from Chuck and Debby Baldwin and their daughter, Julie, who are serving with United World Mission in West Africa. The Baldwins are originally from Syracuse. The letter reads as follows: [ “Life is fragile — handle it with prayer . It was a Friday night. Chuck had gone to bed early with an annoying head cold. Julie was asleep, too. I sat at my desk with the Mali Field’s financial books opened. As I stared out the window, I saw Greg’s pickup pull up in front of our nurse Shirley’s house. I saw someone set a lantern on her front porch. And I could see several youngsters in that dim light . When I heard Mary’s Honda 90 putting around, I realized someone was sick. I took our flashlight and headed down to see what the commotion was all about. Both nurses, Mary and Shirley, and five of the boys from the Boys’ School were standing over their little friend, Sambu. Sambu had fallen six hours earlier and hit his abdominal area on a cement bench. He had lain in his hut all afternoon in pain before anyone came to get a nurse. By 9 p.m., Sambu was dead. Perhaps a punctured spleen fr&m a b&ken rib caused the internal bleeding which killed him. Later, at 11 p.m, that night, we heard our group of pastors heading toward the graveyard behind the mission property. singing said it all. “Yesu sara, Yesu sara, an Matigi don. . Yesu kunuwa. .” (Jesus

very much, either. “What is it we have that doesn’t change at all? But it is just like everything else,” she said. Mrs. Deaton’s life has always been very full and busy. She was on television for nine and a half years as a homemaker. The Syracuse Home Ec Club was organized in her home. She owns the House of Friendship, across the street from the church, and the home ec meetings used to beheld here. She and her father went to school in thehouse and she met her husband, Sherman, there when he taught her in school. Home for Mrs. Deaton has been in the same location all her life, also. She was born at home and in 1922, her mother, husband and she tore down the original home almost completely and built a new home. Now, she lives in the home with her son, Bud Watkins and his wife, Edith. Mrs. Deaton said, “I’ve never known anything else than to live with family and I wouldn’t have it any other way." When asked about an outstanding event that has happened at the church, Mrs. Deaton answered, “Everything that has happened at the church has been outstanding to me.” After a little more thought, Mrs. Deaton said her granddaughter’s wedding was one of the most outstanding things, she remembers. Her granddaughter, Robin, married another member of the church, Larry McCaula. Mrs. Deaton played the piano for their wedding. The only thing that worried Mrs. Deaton was whether she could keep from crying enough to play. “This community has been my life,” summed Mrs. Deaton. As for the future Mrs. Deaton said, “Whatever the Lord wants me to do, I want him to tell me and I will do it. I don’t plan on just sitting around, I want him to tell me. I don’t know exactly what it will be yet, but I'm sure I will.”
died. Jesus was raised. He is our Saviour.) Death is so uncomplicated out here. One minute you're working, playing, living. The next you’re gone. There’s not much in between waiting. And it’s accepted. The exciting part for us is seeing the Christians actually celebrate when a brother is taken home. The next morning I asked our houseboy, Fassega, if he knew Sambu was in heaven. He answered, ‘Oh, madame, Sambu came to school to learn of Jesus. I think he's with Him now.’ We are slowly learning how fragile life is; what a gift each day is to us from the Lord. Thank the Lord with us for these blessings we have experienced lately: Protection over Julie as she plays. We realized this week that the cement slab where Julie sits in the back yard has several holes under it. We killed two snakes there one day. The large debt for the airplane repairs in 1982 has at last been paid off. We don’t always understand why some things take so much time. In the past three months, Chuck has flown 6,541 miles. Thanks for praying him through thunderstorm weathker') In His Love, Chuck>Debby and Julie Baldwin The Baldwins’ field address is B.P. 15, Kenieba, via Bamako, Mali, West Africa.

Calvary circles hold Christmas meetings
The Calvary United Methodist Circles of Syracuse met for their Christmas meetings recently. The Martha Circle met at 9 a.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church with 16 members present. A new member, Margaret Myle, was welcomed to the circle. Hostesses for the coffee hour were Helen Miller and Mary Jane Bowton. The tables were decorated in tune with the holiday season. Prayer was offered by Betty Eaton, circle leader. » The business meeting opened with a few comments from Rev. Maish. A Christmas wish was read by the leader. Lillian Disher gave the lesson, “Christmas”. Scripture and hymns were read and sung by the group and the meeting closed with the singing of “Silent Night”. The Lois Circle met in the youth room of the church with Wava Witmer and Pauline Fawley as hostesses. Millie Shively, circle leader, opened the meeting by reading an article about Jesus. Then she presented the lesson entitled, “Celebration of Joy”. Roll call was answered by 13 members. The report of the recent executive committee meeting was read. Prayer partners from the past year were revealed and gifts were exchanged. It was announced that the January meeting date has been changed to Jan. 16. Joan Sharp opened the Ruth Circle meeting and welcomed 12 members and two guests. Dorothy Thomas reported on Visions of Peace by Shirley Heckaman. Thomas studied at School of Missions. Reports were read from the different officers and a business meeting was held. The group decided to send money from their special offering fund to Mr. and Mrs. Marple of Cloumbia, Mo. This money is for place settings of dinnerware. Priscilla Juday read the Christmas Story from the scripture and the story “The Littlest Angel”. While listening to music, the group exchanged gifts and assigned Prayer Partners for 1985. The Ruth Circle’s next meeting will be Jan. 15.
