THE WARSAW TIGERS SEEM TO BE head and shoulders above the basketball talent in Northern Indiana this year. The Tigers, 9-1, were nearly perfect from the foul line as they edged previously unbeaten South Bend Clay in the South Bend Holiday tournament championship. Although Jeff Grose scored 24 points perhaps the most impressive Tiger was Rick Fox. The sophomore center scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the championship game. He scored nine points and had a host of rebounds in Warsaw’s opening 57-54 victory ovjer South Bend Riley. • 4 JACK EDISON AND HIS PLYMOUTH PILGRIMS found the South Bend tourney a little tougher than the champion Tigers did. Plymouth, in the opening game, dropped a 72-67 decision to South Bend St. Joesph. Tony Plothow was the leader offensively for the Pilgrims as he poured in 39 points in the defeat. It should be an interesting matchup when Brooks Koble and the Wawasee Warriors face Plothow and the Pilgrims Friday, Jan. 4, in Plymouth. Plothow is averaging around 20 points per game while Koble is near the 25 point figure. —o— HE HAS ONLY BEEN A FATHER for a few days, but Wawasee’s head basketball coach John Wysong is already making plans for his daughter, Jenna Renae, to become a future basketball star. “She has to decide what she wants to be,’.’ joked Wysong a couple days after he and his wife. Dawn, became parents for the first time. “What I would like to do is have her hang around Sandy Payne, Anita Swope and Dale Brannock. Their basketball abilities would have to rub off.” Although somewhat premature, Wysong has already conceived a plan to carry this effort out. It’s as simple as fishing in Lake Wawasee in midJuly. “I thought about getting a fish net and putting Jenna in it,” laughed Wysong. “Then when Wawasee’s girls’ team plays I can drop the net into one of Brannock's huddles. She would learn a lot there.” That plan, however, will not be tested, according to Wysong. “Dawn didn’t like that idea,” he added. Whatever career Jenna decides upon, I am * sure both John and Dawn will be proud parents. Who knows, Jenna could become an outstanding basketball player like father, or a beautiful cheerleader like mother. John starred at Fairfield High School and Tri-State University while Dawn was a Fairfield cheerleader. » Congratulations to all three Wysongs, John, Dawn and Jenna Renae! ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP Games confronting panel members after their holiday hiatus are North Wood at Rochester, Concord at Fairfield, Wawasee at / Plymouth, Goshen at Bremen, Penn at Warsaw/ Indiana at Michigan, Purdue at lowa, Ohio State at Michigan State, Illinois at lowa and Wisconsin at Northwestern. The Mishawaka Invitational, held on December 28-29, proved to be a tough test for Wawasee’s •wrestlers as the Warriors took 14th place in a talent-laden field of 22 teams. The state’s number two ranked team, Bellmont, won the meet with 211 points. Eighth-ranked Goshen was second with 187*2, followed by Hobart with 186, Fort Wayne Snider with 156*2, Penn with 138 and Chesterton with 109*2. Wawasee compiled 57* 2 points. Although this year’s finish was a bit of a drop off from their 1983 ninth-place effort, the Warriors had several reasons to be pleased with the outcome. Most notably; the wrestling of heavyweight Steve Sturgill and 145-pound Brad Traviolia earned Wawasee some respect with their fine efforts in the two-day classic. Traviolia breezed to the 145-pound title while Sturgill cap.tured fourth in his class. Traviolia's performance at Mishawaka was another of his steady, smart outings that have made him one of the state’s best at 145 pounds. He breezed WHS switches time for frosh basketball game Wawasee High School Athletic Director Hal Traviolia announced that Thursday’s freshmen girls basketball game will begin at 6 p.m., rather than the previously planned 5 p.m. tip-off. The game will be played in Wawasee’s physical education annex.

through a field that included seven unbeaten wrestlers to leave his own record perfect at 18-0. ' After taking his first two matches by 17-1 and 16-6 scores, he pinned his third opponent in 4:25. He followed that with a 22-8 decision in the semifinals and beat Calumet’s Brian Buffington 6-2 in the finals. Traviolia had a total of 23 takedowns over the two days. it’s too bad that more people don’t get to see him wrestle,” said Wawasee coach Rich Welborn. “He’s smart, goes with the percentage moves, and is a potential state champion.” Sturgill, who Welborn credited with “without a doubt his best wrestling of the year,” fought hard for his fourth-place finish. He downed Goshen’s heavyweight, Jeff Borntrager, beat St. Joe’s undefeated heavyweight and then dropped two matches. Hobart’s Mickey Ellis beat him 8-2 in the match for third place. Ned Hunsberger, was the only remaining Wawasee team c member to make it into the consolation rounds. He wound up with sixth place in the 155-pound class. Eliseo Roa and Lance Lantz both advanced to the second day of wrestling, but were unable to land spots in the consolation or finals.
