Sports comment — Calling the shots
ALTHOUGH MUCH OF WHAT YOU have read concerning Wawasee’s basketball team centers around Brooks Koble, there are a couple , of other players beginning to make a little noise. John Evans -and Tim Mangas both scored 11 points last week against Prairie Heights. Their « offensive output was, by far, the most points any Warriors has scored this season. Os course, that is besides the efforts of Koble. But in this game against the Panthers, both Evans and Mangas looked comfortable shooting and with a great deal of confidence. To take it a little bit further, their offensive effort against Prairie Heights may have spelled the difference from Wawasee’s second win of the season to its third loss. When Mangas and Evans put up their shots, they wereteeyones. Not only did it add two additional points to Waw'asee's column, but it showed the Panthers that not the Jone Warrior that can score. -Although it may be too early to tell, last weekend’s victory may be the turning point to Wawasee’s season. The Warriors have consistently played respectable defense in 1984. The only question was its offense. Evans and Mangas may have answered sonqe very important questions for coach John Wysong. Should Wawasee keep coming up with new answers to its offensive questions, it could develop into a very competitive team. As a matter of fact, there is no reason why Wawasee can’t beat Warsaw this weekend. Warsaw has already lost, which should asssist the Warriors. Wysong’s squad knows it can play with good teams. Now Wawasee must go out .and play its hardest and see what happens. MIKE “HIT MAN’’ EASLER, the designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox was in Warsaw this past week to talk at the Christian Business Men’s Committee/Tonwßoy, President of Unlimited Potential, s' baseball organization working to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ brought Easier to Warsaw. While in town, Easier shared with the businessmen his faith in Jesus Christ. He noted that he became a Christian in 1975 and has benefited since. He broke into professional baseball in the Houston Astros organization but made his professional debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played on the 1980 World Championship team in Pittsburgh before being traded to Boston at the start of last season. JEFF LONG AND WORTH PACKER are not enjoying their greatest basketball seasons this year at Grace College. That is one reason why coach Jim Kessler’s team is off to a rocky 4-5 start. Long, shooting at a 83 percent clip from the foul line, is the leading free throw shooter for the Lancers. From the field he has connected on 46 percent of his attempts while scoring at a 8.8 clip. Meanwhile, Packer has concentrated on his rebounding skills, instead of his offensive scoring this season. His 8.13 point per game average reflects his 45 percent field goal shooting and 64 percent accuracy from the charity stripe. Despite the lackluster statistics, both players remain optimistic about the season ahead “We are going through some rough times right now, but I am confident that we will turn this around," said Long. "We have a great amount of talent and coach ‘K’ is a great coach. We just can’t panick at this point." The Lancers’ next home action will be Saturday, Dec. 8, against IUPUI. Tip-off has not been set. THE MAIL-JOURNAL’ MARKSMEN will make their 1984-85 debut Wednesday. Dec. 5, at when they face the TimesUnion/WRSW Media Maniacs. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. The Marksmen finished last season with a 1-1 record, but thisxseason is full of question marks. Tom Charlefc, Randy Jacobs, Mike Clevenger. Kirk Stichter, Scott Wise and Mike Brill will not be in uniform when the Marksmen open their season.
MKii SMT Mm -> COACHES' PHILOSOPHY — John Wysoag, varisty basketball coach at Wawasee High School, spoke to the Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club Tuesday. Dec. 4. about his philosophy of coaching and teaching. Wysoag said it is important to look at the total picture of the students with whom he works. “It to hard to set standards which the players must react when there to such a variance in the teams which are played," commented Wysong. He ways the imported thing to to see that the kids fed they have done the very best they can do. The important thing, win or lose, to whether the intensity of play is what it should be. “There to a need for a'commitment to excellence." When this commitment to there, he to satisfied with what his team has done. His rewards come from the people he works with, both the staff and faculty as well as the students. He feds good about “the kids he has to work with at Wawasee.” Shown in the photo are Bob Kocker. program chairman; Wysong; and James Caskey, president of Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary. (Photo by Col. Willaman’s claim to fame was that he went to the same high school as Todd Blackledge, now a quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. While in college, Willaman was a very fine intramural basketball player. He had a shot at making the Grace Lancer squad, but missed the layup.
While Charles is enjoying the Colorado sunshine on his vacation he is hoping his picks turn out to be as enjoyable. Winners: Warsaw, Goshen, Wawasee, Concord, Adams, Manchester. Illinois, IUPUI, Indiana and Purdue. It seems as though tein is starting to get some, breaks with his picks. The’ Grace graduate is on Charles’ coat tails and could move into a first-place tie should the Lancers upend IUPUI. Winners: Warsaw, Goshen, Wawasee. Concord, Adams, Manchester, Illinois, Grace, Indiana and Purdue. Willaman is looking to bring the guest back into contention. The first-year teacher’s only problem is that he knows more about Ohio basketball than Indiana basketball. Nevertheless, he is going with Warsaw, 1 Goshen, Wawasee, Concord. Warsaw, Rochester, Illinois, Grace, Indiana and Purdue. Kuhn suffered through a miserable week as he correctly scored on four of his nine picks. Nevertheless, he remains ahead of the boastful Rich Rhodes, who remained in the celler. Kuhn’s winners: Warsaw, Lakeland, Triton, Concord, Adams, Manchester, Illinois, IUPUI, Indiana and Pty-due. Sturgis, although only correctly picking four of the nine contests, improved her percentage. She is counting on Warsaw. Goshen, Wawasee. Concord, Adams, Manchester, Illinois,- IUPUI, Indiana and Purdue to pull her up in the standings. Rhodes has fallen upon jiard times Two weeks ago he was on top of the pile, now he is at the bottom. The darkroom expert sees Warsaw, Lakeland. Wawasee, Concord, Warsaw, Manchester, Illinois, IUPUI, Indiana and Purdue winning.
