Calling the shots CHARLES
MUCH OF WHAT YOU READ about the 1984-85 Warrior basketball team centers around Brooks Koble. The smooth senior guard is averaging nearly 28 points through three games and has been the Warriors’ main offensive threat. \ As important as Koble is to the Wawasee attack, however, he may not be the real key to how well this team performs. It takes five or more players with confidence to be successful and even a player of Koble’s ability can’t gloss over that fact. . “We want to play with more consistency and we want to feel that we are playing as good as we can play,’’ notes coach John Wysong. “We want to become a better team — we just have to let the wins and losses fall where they may." At this point, one challenge is to get more people involved offensively. Aside from Koble, many of the Warriors are tentative when it comes to shooting the ball. The chances are there, but too many shots are not taken. “It’s entirely a matter of confidence,’’ says Wysong. “All our players will have to work hard at getting open. They can score, they just have to believe they can do it.” —o— THE WAWASEE-CO!\'CORD basketball game scheduled for this Friday night has been postponed due to Concord’s participation in the state football playoffs. The contest will be played on Saturday, Dec. 22, at Concord. Another sports note of interest to NLC watchers is that Concord s Renee Rupnow and Plymouth's Lori Keil were voted to the All-State First Team in volleyball for this year. Lori Wesolek. another Concord product was named to the All-State Academic team The Minutewomen finished 23-6 and lost to Mishawaka Marian in sectional play. Plymouth was the state runner-up —o— THE FIRST WARRIOR WRESTLING CLASSIC was a big success in many ways, but it wasn't without its rough spots One of the main letdowns of the two-day affair was the high number of forfeits in some of the dual meets Several of the schools failed to field entire teams and that meant some Wawasee wrestlers weren't able to see much action Ron Rodeffer and Eloise Roa. as examples, wrestled only three times in six matches “We wanted to have the Classic in order to get some experience early in the year,” said coach Rich Welborn “It kind of defeats that purpose when other teams don't have the wrestlers " Other than that, however, the event went/>ff without a hitch — and it looks as though it will be a good addition to the school s athletic program , — o— KOI NDBALL ROUNDUP The Wawasee Lady Warriors stopped one of the state s longer regular season winning streaks Saturday night with their 57-49 win over the Mishawaka Cavemen Dating back to the 1982-83 season? the Cavemen had won 30 consecutive regular season contests Wawasee, on the other hand, has now won 10 straight regular season encounters. Last week's results were Fairfield 84. Central Noble 53; Mishawaka 62. Wawasee 51; Central 66. Goshen 50; Ohio State 85, Lafayette 67; Rochester 55, Tippe Valley 54; Louisville 75. New Figures Indicate Bowling Is Most Popular Women’s Sport by Jim Dressel WHAT IS THE most popular women's sport extant? If you guessed bowling, give yourself a passing grade. There are not only more women who bowl than participate in any other sport, they also outnumber the men. According to new figures released by the Women’s International Bowling Congress and American Bowling Congress for 'B3-84 league season, the women competing in organized bowling play now total 3,886,716. There were 3,791,081 men who bowled in sanctioned league play last season. Despite its popularity, women bowlers fight for every bit of recognition they can get, especially, among the general sports community. That's why it was such a thrill for many tenpin athletes when Marion Ladewig, generally acknowledged as the finest woman bowler ever, was inducted into the Women’s Sports foundation Hall of Fame this fall. Ladewig. Grand Rapids, Mich., was inducted with diver Pat McCormick into the pioneer category for athletes who performed prior to I 960; Already included in that group are such all-time women sports greats as Babe Didrickson Zaharias, Althea Gibson, Sonja Henie and Amelia Earhart. It was a proud moment for Ladewig, who was proclaimed Woman Bowler of the Year a record nine times in her career before retiring from active competition in the mid-'6os. HE'S GOT A MILLION OF THEM-Will Mark Roth be the Male Bowler of the Year in 1984? Who knows, but he’s having that kind of season. Even if he doesn’t earn that honor for a fourth time in an illustrious career, he says 1984 will surely be another personal milestone. Roth, the second richest pro bowler in history (behind only Earl Anthony), predicts hell become the sport’s newest millionaire before 1985 dawns. “I’ll make six stops this fall, and I’m gonna make it.. .as long as I bowl the way I’ve been bowling all year.” Heading into the fall tour, Roth was the year's top money earner with $105365 and needed just $11333 more to breach the golden 7-figure level and join Anthony as the tour's only millionaires. Ironically, Anthony will supply the color analysis for NBC-TV in its Saturday afternoon live telecasts of the fall tour. Jay Randolph will do the balLby-ball announcing.
