Winona Lake: Circa 1900 and today
By CLARENCE R. MCNEIL Guest Feature Writer “Blow out your lamp and come to bed, Billy. Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy and wise you know. ” Obedience was immediate due to recollections of the razor strap that had made an impression on him earlier. Unbottoning ankle high shoeupstairs there was still a warmth from the nickel-plated sides of the coal stove where they had rested. Over-the-knee black cotton stockings were next. Then came the knee length trousers that buttoned to a blouse ($2.50 in the mail order catalog). Itchy woolen underwear came next and then quickly into the flannel nightgown. There is no space to describe the same procedure for sis and Mom. Avant-grade ‘ hour-glass” figures took another person to handle the bone corset (50 cents — mail order) of the svelte 18-inch diameter waistline. Dressing for bathing at the turn of the century only brings laughs now. Men’s woolen suits had sleeves to the elbows and legs to

Special treasures make cherished Yule memories
’ Christmas The very word is magic. It conjures up all the past, present and future delights of that very special holiday. Each generation of children has a treasure trove 6f memories about Christmas, says the Jewelry Industry Council Years ago. the Christmas tree was a real tree, pungent with the smell of the outdoors mingling with all the other delightful smells of Christmas — the roasting turkey, the hot mince pies, and glowing bayberry candles. Festoons of homemade popcorn and freshly baked gingerbread men hung gaily from the tree branches. Today’s trees may be imitation. with manufactured decoraUps for fire safety Don’t let your Christmas go up in smoke. Protect your family byfollowing these tips, which are part of the Burger King Fire Safety Program. • Buy only a fresh Christmas tree — one whose needles are moist and soft. Stand it in a water-filled container to keep it from drying out. • If you buy an artificial tree, be sure it is certified as flame retardant. • Place the tree in a cool area. NEVER near a heater or the fireplace. • Never set up electrical toys, such as trains, near the tree where sparks could ignite them. Check Christmas lights for worn wires and loose sockets. • Don’t leave the tree lights on at night or when no one is around to watch. • Avoid sudden flare-ups-jn the fireplace which can be causedby burning wrapping paper or cardboard boxes. • Always keep a screen in front of the fireplace, even when the logs are just smouldering. New Year's renewal New Year’s, as the beginning of a new cr endar cycle, is a time to stop thinking of me and begin remembering you. It is a time to re-assess our goals and make new plans for arriving at goals fallen short of in the past. It is a time to make good honest resolutions, the kind that last.

the knees plus a skirt. Ladies had to try to swim with a dress-like outfit with a cap resembling today’s shower cap that kept the hip length hair together. Had any young lady appeared back then attired in a current bikini she would have been charged with indecent exposure by police. Short hair, lipstick and rouge were the trademarks of the pro-r-agtftute and were vigorously shunned by a proper lady. Gentlemen removed their hats in the presence of a lady. In public transportation gentlemen gave their s eats to a lady if none were available. In contrast today young men have been seen to race an elderly lady to a seat Paved streets are a modern luxury. In the period under scrutiny automobiles were scarce. Horse-drawn fireequipment, milk wagons, delivery wagons etc. required every town to have a Sanitation Department and a sprinkler tank wagon to settle the dust on the unpaved streets. Christmas trees were lighted by candles in a holder-clamp. Nearby was the ever present bucket of water if the tree should
tions, but many of the old holiday traditions remain the same. Christmas is usually the time when young men give their girl friends that very special diamond engagement ring. It’s also the time when very young ladies get their first piece of real jewelry —a gold locket on a chain And their brothers delight in their first wrist watch. Christmas is a time for families gathering together and meeting with dear friends. It’s a festive, joyful, loving time of year, and a time when hearts are happiest. Small wonder that Christmas is the time when people choose to present their loved ones with gifts of love that have a special meaning. and will be treasured for all the years to come The magic of Christmas Is not over once one is out of childhood. It’S also the time when older couples celebrating 30 or 40 or more years of marriage commemorate their union with a diamond anniversary ring for her. while he may be favored with his birthstone in a ring flanked with diamonds. All in all. Christmas is a time when many special memories are made — often with small packages from the jeweler that will go on year after year giving pleasure, says the Council.

catch fire. This was the Winona Lake scene as Billy Sunday rose to prominence. Young people today cannot imagine living without TV, radio, electric lights, outboard motors and dozens of other conveniences. Many people built summer homes just for the Chautauqua and Bible Conference season. Inside walls were often unfinished except for the more affluent. Os

these later John M. Studebaker (autos) and H. J. Heinz (pickles) owned summer homes in Winona Lake. The pioneer Beyer Family originally owned a large part of what is now the town of Winona Lake. Their imposing home, now part of the Assembly, overlooks the Hillside concourse and the Billy Sunday Tabernacle. The small home to the north has been in the pioneer Funk family for four generations and is typical of the strictly summer home construction of early years. Winona Lake filled the void in the above scene that is now taken up by sports and television. Sunday then was more of a holy day than a holiday. On Sunday afternoon church people took a leisurely stroll — the only activity. In .fact when R. G. LeTourneau became president in 1945 of the Assembly all athletics and swimming on Sunday were forbidden. Strict limitations were put on any activity. Today the Winona scene has lost most of its former significance. Pictures of Billy and Nell Sunday no longer grace the stage of the Billy Sunday Tabernacle The summer schedule once started on Memorial Day and ended on Labor Day. This year Moody week started activity the first week of July with AAJE concluding the conference season in the middle of August. However a new optimistic note is evident with the coming of Ronald J. Busch to the newly created position of executive director. Present plans call for the 1985 season to start earlier. The IFCA conference starts June 22 and activities will end again with AAJE on August 17. Future plans call for renovation of the hotel, additionaljiarking space and more athletic facilities. A large building constructed over the lake shore formerly used as a cafeteria and skating rink will become an exhibition hall. A publicity thrust toward area churches for yearround banquets, retreats, seminars etc. is in the works. Prospects for the future are bright as many letters of inquiry for 1985 are already appearing. Winona Lake is looking up to a rosy future.
