'Hey Stupid!' or why doesn't my child have any self-confidence?
By KENNETH ESKOW, PH.D. Your child’s’ self-concept is a very delicate and fragile aspect of his/her personality. It will help shape the rest of his/her life in terms of decisions to make, chances to take, interpersonal relationships, ambition and more. You are, as parents, who your child will look to in the of his/her selfcoricept. A big responsibility isn’t Too often we make success the condition to earn praise., Now, there is nothing wrong with success put what about the enjoyment received when doing something just for the sake of doing it? What about the child who fails? When a failure occurs we may consider it to be insignificant, but what does the child think? Is theft the feeling they've let you down? Does the child feel that you’ve lost confidence in

him/her? This is quite likely, actually. When this happens the child often becomes afraid of failure. Very often children will avoid attempting something new because of this fear. These are some suggestions for avoiding this cycle: • Emphasize the fun obtained from participation. After a game, for example, the first question asked should be, “Did you have fun?” not “Did you win?” • Don’t put unfair expectations on your child. Realistically, what can you expect from your child’s ability? • Don’t be sarcastic. Encouragement and love work much better • Never imply that your love is dependent upon accomplishments. Your child shouldn’t have to earn your love. Show .this to your child in your actions, not just words.
• I
• Let your child express his/her discouragement. It’s imErtant to let those feelings out. len, point out skills he/she has; st accomplishments; and the fun involved. • Provide realistic challenges. Make some of them big and some small. When playing games together don’t “let” your child

By DORIS MCMANIS CAMDEN Guest Writer We are de-junking our home. We haven’t moved for 23 years and don’t plan to move, so we need to “dig out from under.” Most households have far too much stashed away. One day I was wondering what could happen to my “treasures.” I refer not to the real things that mean something to the family, but the old maps, broken souvenirs, out-of-date patterns and rotten nylon left from someone’s project. But mainly I was thinking of my genealogy materials and collections. To a non-genealogist, this could appear to be worthless junk. What a burden all of this could be to busy family members. My piling system must soon become a filing system — maybe not soon, but at least start work. I don't want someone else sorting my “treasures.” Large boxes in our basement now have labels on them. Some things will go to charities. Others will go to the historical society and its genealogy section. Husband, Bill, has gotten into it, and we are bidding farewell to old checks, driedup cans of paint and worn-out paint clothes. A short time each day or so is making a dent. I even found our ping-pong table! The hula skirt went to a daughter for Hallowe’en. Old sheets left over from years of tent camping, small remnants of materials and some old clothing are going to Alma Weimer, the 80-some-year-old lady who has made hundreds of guilts for our church to give to World Relief. Clean, worn-out nylons go to the DAR for their contribution to the Veterans Administration craft projects at Marion, Indiana. Square dance dresses, shoe boxes, black negatives must go. Now to get to the point of this Gifts for the gourmet cook If you have several gourmet . cooks on your holiday shopping list, there's no need to rack your brain for gift ideas. Nowadays, specialty shops and housewares departments of stores offer ail kinds of gadgets to delight culinary artists. Opening clams is a cinch with a steel clam opener that does the job easily for your favorite cook, comes apart for cleaning A cleaver set that includes boning and paring knives, cleaver and slicer will make the amateur chef feel like a real professional Your favorite cook can reap added compliments on his or her pasta, with a noodle maker for turning out homemade spaghetti or fettucim. Copper cookware with aluminum core offers the advantage of even heat distribution plus the beauty of gleaming copper to display.
win — that could make him/her feel that you don’t have any confidence in him/her at all. • Show your child that you are human and can fail also. • Set a good example. * An atmosphere of warmth and unconditioned love is a big element in establishing confidence. Together, you and your child can
story. Buried among YOUR things that need de-junking may be newspaper clippings, old Bibles with family records in them, snapshots and photographs, school pictures and yearbooks that would delight your family genealogist. Label the pictures, being careful not to make indentations from the back. Sort through everything, because little things have a tendency to get lodged between bigger things. Why not start today? You will feel better about it, and what you were always going to get done will at least be started. The first place we start in genealogy is looking in our own home, bn closet shelves, in boxes and in desk drawers. Please make a gift to someone who will truly appreciate it. To genealogists: Old refrigerators and freezers make good storage places for record books, pictures, charts and family Bibles. They are more or less fireproof, and they would at least shed water in case of a fireT Things that we collect are not replaceable. Just be sure The locks are removed before you put them into use so thata child cannot get trapped inside. 112. My mother was Ruth
