Wed., November 14,1984 — THE MAIL-JOURNAL

Norris Named as World Open Honoree by Chuck Pezzano Joe Norris, at 76 one of the most amazing athletes in the world, will be honored by Brunswick during the 1984 Brunswick World Open in November. Norris was one of the most feared match game competitors in the days when the best showed their ability by taking on each other in head to head, home and home matches. He also excelled as a team player and a team leader, serving as captain of some of the most famous teams of alltime in Detroit and Chicago. He still rolls in the annual American Bowling Congress Championship as he has for more than 50 years with an incredible lifetime average of well over 190, a long list of outstanding performances, and a good shot at knocking down more than 100,000 pins before he’s through. But with all his great telent, and he also showed this as a young man bowling for the United States team in Germany in 1936 in a 14 nation mixing in conjunction with the Olympic Games, the side of Norris that has kept him young is his sense of humor. Norris always has given bowling instruction clinics and exhibitions and as Andy Varipapa showed, personality is as important as knowledge and ability. In addition to his talent as Norris was one < the top lane men in the country and thus often Supervised lane conditioning for the major tournaments, ABC, All-Star, World Invitational etc. Anyone who bowls knows this is a no-win situation because the lane man always gets blamed for any bad bowling. And in every event you can only make one bowler real happy, the winner. So Norris also became an expert at practical jokes. At one event he nailed a dead fish under the massage table, and after one visit, the bowlers failed to return, and the man in charge almost went crazy looking for the cause of the stench and the person responsible. The late Joe Smolen was the longtime tournament director for the annual ABC tourney, and he and Norris traveled together often. One-time as they were driving along, Smolen at the wheel, Norris handed him a brown bag, supposedly containing cookies. When Smolen stuck his hand in it came out with a live snake. Norris was always switching equipment on bowlers, scaring them until the last minute. He thought nothing of bringing strange animals not only to places where they didn’t belong, but places no one ever expected to see them. One of his most ambitious projects was to have esupenters start building a garage around Smolen’s car, in the bowling center’s parking lot. A smiling, always carefree man, Norris has been honored by national state and regional Halls of Fame across the nation. He is always, interestand entertaining. These days he usually travels with a young bowler giving advice to senior groups as to how they can stay young. His partners are under 30 most of the time, and all agree he helps keep them young jvith his bowling, his smile, and his pranks.
