By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer For the majority of Wawasee’s girls’ swim team, the season is over. They must now work hard during the off-season in anticipation of what could be a very promising 1985 season. But the swimming season is not over for one Warrior — Jeanine Gunn. The junior diver qualified for this weekend’s state meet at the Indiana-Purdue University Natatorium in Indianapolis with fine aperformance at the Elkhart Sectional. Although it was not her best performance of the season, it was very close. She consistently hit her dives and kept constant pressure on the front runners. This is the second consecutive year that Gunn has earned a berth in the finals. Last year she finished near the middle of the field, but Caldwell feels she could move up considerably this time around. “She performed really well at Elkhart,” said Caldwell about his most consistent diver. “She has worked hard all season, and it is fitting for her to make it to the state.” Team Standings In the team standings, host Central captured the sectional championship with a convincing 330* 2 points. Northern Lakes Conference foes, Goshen and Concord placed second and third while the Warriors finished fifth. Pam Foyle and Gunn paced the Wawasee effort. Foyle finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle event and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle. Meanwhile, Gunn was the fourth best diver in the sectional. Kris Neff also turned in another outstanding performance for the Warriors. By placing fourth in the breaststroke, Neff was able to perform up to Caldwell’s expecml ' Zri SANDY PAYNE Second Team
92 percent of her passes, 35 percent of her spikes and 36 percent of her blocks. Payne was one of the team’s top back-row players in addition to being a fine hitter. She was named the team’s best defensive player. This is the second consecutive year that Speicher and Swope have been named to the first team. Payne was also a second team selection last year. The Lady Warriors finished 4-3 in the NLC and tied for third with North Wood and Rochester. Concord and Bremen shared the title' with 5-2 records, Plymouth was 3-4, Goshen was 2-5 and Warsaw was 1-6. Plymouth fared the best of any team in post-season play. The Pilgrims advanced all the way to the state finals before losing the championship match in two games.
JEANINE GUNN State Qualifier tations while dropping her time slightly. “I was pleased with everyone's performance,” said Caldwell after the meet. “I would have liked to have seen more qualify for the state meet, but that's how things go sometimes.” Although Gunn was the lone Warrior to advance to the final meet of the year, another Warrior will be at the special meet. Caldwell Honor Caldwell will serve two functions at the meet in Indianapolis. Not only will he be there to give Gunn some encouragement, but he will also be representing the coaches from the Elkhart Sectional. He was named "Coach of the Year” at the sectional meet“I was very much surprised by the honor,” said a nearly speechless Caldwell. “I never dreamed about such an award, it is quite an honor.”
Warriors, Lady Warriors poised for openers
By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor As far as John Wysong amd Dale Brannock are concerned, history would be welcome to repeat itself this weekend. Both Wawasee head coaches will guide their basketball teams iqto opening contests against teams they defeated during the 1983-84 Season The Warriors

A special honor indeed, and quite fitting for the rookie coach. Caldwell took over a team that hovered near the .500 mark, at best, last season. In one year’s time, he has turned the Lady Warriors swim program into a very competitive program. The team finished with a final record of 9-5-1. Brannock and his charges dumped the Falcons by a lopsided 74-3 f count last year" at Wawasee. Four players were in double figures, with Christy Speicher’s 18 points leading the way. Speicher, like Koble, will be a central figure in her team’s success. Different Stories Wysong and Brannock are confronted with different situations

as they head into the new season. Brannock enjoys the return of nind letterwinners off last year’s 21-2 team that made a trip to the Fort Wayne Semistate. Wysong, on the other hand, must build his squad around three returnees from last year’s 15-6 team. Rebuilding, however, is nothing new for Wysong and the fourth-year coach is concerned about creating strong, solid fundamentals in his players. “What we have to do is work as a team and learn what good basketball really is,” Wysong sard. “That is our goal, to learn what good basketball is.” In addition to Koble, Wysong will count on seniors Seth Swihart, John Jones and John Hapner and junior Dave Kistler to carry much of the Warriors’ fortunes this year. Tim Mangas is also expected to see a lot of playing time. While the Warriors may be able to sneak up on some people due to their lack of experience, the Lady Warriors will be a prime target for most of the teams they face. They are currently ranked fourth in the state and should draw plenty of attention. “You don’t win games by being ranked,” cautioned Brannock. “The only way you win is to go out and get the job done. I’m not going to approach this season any differently than I have the other four (at Wawasee).” Guards Anita Swope and Sandy Payne will join Speicher and Michelle Harter as four sure starters for the team. Seniors Sheila Kleinrichert and Karla Stichter are also expected to see plenty of action.
