Humanly speaking — 'Mommy, I had an accident' or the bedwetting problem

Your child has started to wet the bed again! Your child is wetting in school! How do you feel? embarrassed? Frustrated? Worried? O.K. Now stop and think how your child feels. First of all, be sure that you are not showing too much concern over an accident —a real accident This is a real possibility, especially with younger children. There is a chance that there could be a physical cause to this problem. Have this checked. In most cases, however, it is not a physical problem. Look at family histories (parents, grandparents, etc.) to see if this is common to the family. Most bedwetting incidents seem to result from an emotional worry or problem. Gently talk to your child and attempt to discover if he/she is experiencing any fears, upsets, or resentments. Do this indirectly and tastefully. What about brothers, sisters, teachers; have they noticed anything? Is there a new baby at home? Are you having family problems and arguments? How much are you expecting of him/her? Too much? Don’t add to the problem. Bedwetting can be humiliating, frightening and can.produce feelings of guilt and shame. Don’t add to the helplessness your child may be feeling by drawing too TOM PRICKETT

much attention to it. Your child needs help and understanding — not criticism. There are some things you can do together: • Put a plastic sheet under his/her regular sheet and emphasize that it is not a punishment — you’re on his/her side. • Stop all drinks for two hours before bedtime. • Be sure he/she visits the toilet just befpre bed. • If the accident happens at about the same time each night, wake him/her up half an hour before for a trip to the bathroom • Try to keep the child on a
