At Grace Brethren Church — 'Rag' Man adds new touch
By JO STURGIS Staff Writer ' A Christian. It’sa big word to live up to, but Rick Glass fits the description in every sense. To exteriorly describe Rick Glass of Warsaw; he is a husband, father of five, manager at NAPA Auto Parts in Warsaw and a member of the Grace Brethren Church in Leesburg. But, beneath the surface, he is a whole lot more. Glass performs stories and incorporates magic tricks into these stories, which he performs at churches and schools throughout the county. , j Glass's performance career started 10 years ago when he was living in Virginia. His mother, who is a teacher of special needs children, asked Glass to tell a story to her class. Glass thought instead of just tell a story, he might as well act one out and add different voices and movements to the story. He told the story, “The Three Little Pigs,” with a few cfcmges such as naming all the characters in the story after his relatives. That’s where his storytelling all began and now he has lived in Warsaw for the past eight years, after being born here, and he is still performing stories. "This is the busiest fall I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been doing an average of one to two shows a week,” said Glass. Glass can perform 53 different stories and 75 different magic tricks, so he can perform in front of the same group several times with an entirely different show. He thinks he performs animal stories the best and one of hisfavorite animal stories is called “The Wall.” This story has eight different animals in it and they all have a different voice. The wall in the story symbolizes sin and all the animals try to get through the wall and fail. They don’t realize there is a door in the wall and with Jesus's help they could find it. But, Glass said his all around favorite story is still “The Three Little Pigs.” His favorite magic trick is one called Spotty. It is the kind of trick that doesn't work and doesn’t work until the very end. He said the children usually boo him
Changes signify Syracuse Nazarene Church
By JO STURGIS Staff Writer The first word that comes to mind when thinking about the Wawasee Community Church of the Nazarene is change. This church has increased its membership from eight to a Sunday attendance of 63 recently, changed its name to Wawasee Community Church of the Nazarene approximately a year ago, hired a new minister seven months ago and is now planning to move to a new location. One traditional practice still left at the church is the mid-week service or as the Wawasee Community Nazarene Church has named it — Christian Living Studies. “The mid-week service is traditiqnal to the Nazarene roots of over 100 years ago,” said Rev. Ron Blake, pastor at the Nazarene Church. Rev. Blake said the mid-week service is an indepth study of the Bible. ’ For the first three months that Rev. Blake conducted the studies, the group studied prayer. They are now studying, "What is the New Testament?’’. Beginning with Acts, the group is urged to read passages from the Bible and categorize the passages into two categories; Evangelism or Edification or both. Evangelism passages tell why the church exists’in the world and Edification passages tell why the church

until the very end of the trick and then they are really amazed. Glass’s stage name, “RAG” Man, comes from the fact that he uses a lot of silk cloths in his magic tricks and that RAG are his initials for his name. The Leesburg Grace Brethren Church has been his favorite performance, said Glass. He performed there last spring and did three shows in 14 hours. He said by the time he got done he couldn’t even talk, but every audience was just great. He has also performed at area schools for Fire Prevention Week. For these shows, he incorporated safety fire rules into all his magic tricks. “I can fit my show for almost any audience but, I like the kids the best because they give instant feedback,” said Glass. Glass is also the Children’s Coordinator at Leesburg Grace Brethren. This involves coordinating the nursery thru sixth grade Sunday School classes and activities. Glass said he selects the curriculum, advises the teachers and meets with the teachers about every 14 months to discuss new approaches to teaching. He said he just tries keep the teachers fired up. As if all these activities aren’t enough to keep Glass busy, he is also a volunteer Winona Lake Fireman, an avid soccer player, a softball player and a basketball player. He broke his foot this year playing soccer, his first major injury, but he’ll be right back out there playing as soon as it heals, he said. Glass also writes poetry. He has written 13 poems. The first poem he ever wrote is entitled, “Ode To a Sofa.” He said most of his poems have a family theme and some are to make you cry and some are to make you laugh. He would like to write 10 more poems, have them illustrated and then published. “I’ve never had so much fun living as right now. I'm having a blast,” Glass related. These aren’t just words he speaks either, his joy for life shines through every word he speaks. Glass said the reason for his happiness is because Jesus Christ has become very close to him. “Jesus Christ is my crutch and what a crutch to have.” This words can pretty much sum up Rick Glass and his life.
r HHH■■ n I fl ~ jev*- -My JW REV. RON BLAKE exists as a gathered community. The last 20 to 90 minutes of the service are spent praying for others. Rev. Blake also encourages testimonies from members who want to make one. Rev. Blake said the mid-week service varies from week to week. Sometimes it is much more structured than other weeks. One thing he is trying to avoid is having the Wednesday evening service be just a miniature

He f<dhe)is not trying to compete with school functions or the TN?, but if a need is out there, he hopes the midweek service can meet that netjd. mid-week servtoe-is'nible oriented and a personal time, said Rev. Blake. He added they don’t cover doctorate material or anything too in-depth. He is trying to meet the needs of all church members. He said all denominations could gain from the Wednesday service. Rev. Blake has only been with the Syracuse-based Nazarene Church since mid-March. Since that time he is happy with the advancements the church has made. He attributes the increase in membership to the solid lay leadership in the church. “This church has the most solid group of nuclei I’ve ever seen in a church,” said Blake. Although the church is still in the talking stages of constructing a new church building, they are all anxiously awaiting the start of construction. The church purchased 10 acres of land on SR 13 S., across from the Harris Funeral Home on which to build the new church. Blake said this should increase their membership and visibility in the community even more. The Wawasee Community Church of the Nazarene —a lot of changes, but also a lot of tradition.
