Doing more with less — Bootstrap businesses
The Mother Earth News has always encouraged people to start cottage industries and home businesses. So we especially like to hear and pass along the success stories reported by readers who have used ideas from the magazine to begin their own com-' mercial endeavors. It’s our hope that these independent people will inspire others to start their own at-home moneymaking enterprises. In Murphy, North Carolina, Jan Worley says she has a bootstrap business she can pick up anytime she needs to by simpJy grabbing a tack hammer and staple gun. “My enterprise was born many years ago when my father asked my sister and me to reupholster a couple of old sofas. Even though I balked at the time, that experience began my upholstering career, and I’m still at it (when I need to be) some 20 years later. And though Dad inspired me, The Mother Earth News has kept me going with such articles as ‘ It Pays to Be and Old Sew-and-Sew” in issue 48 of the magazine. It really helped to reaffirm my faith in a person’s ability to take care of herself and her family without having to hold down a regular job “For example, my son recently needed surgery at a hospital nearly 200 miles from home. So during my stay in that town, while he was hospitalized, I bought an old sofa sor <; $45, reupholstered, and sold it for SSOO. That certainly helped us get the budget back in balance! “I can find the sort of work I do almost i anytime, and since my customers, as a rule, supply both furniture and fabric, the cost of the tools I mentioned has been my only investment: one tack hammer, 25 cents at a flea market, and one electric stapler, sl9 95.’’ A reader from Cerritos, California, started a home business after completing her veterinary-assistant training. “I decided I'd Hit my skills and my love of animals to work by caring for ofher people’s pets in my home. But because of the location and sizgedf my house, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to handle

winners and various categories with a grand prize going to the most original to be presented. animals that would need a backyard in which to exercise,” she wrote. “I figured I could, however, take in smaller guests such as birds, reptiles, and rodents that are commonly kept in cages. After receiving several caged critters at my home, I also began to visit other people’s houses to care for their pets there. Before accepting responsibility for any person’s animal, though, I require the owner’s signature on a form releasing me from any liability in case of an accident, and written permission to take the animal to a vet in an emergency. “Because I want to keep my pet-sitting business on a small scale for now, I don’t make a fortune, but I do make extra cash. Expanding the enterprise would be as easy as stepping up my advertising, and I can do so quickly if ever I need or want to.” For free additional information on bootstrap busineaaea and on The Mother , Earth News magazine, send your name and address and ask for Reprint No. 2329: "Bootstrap Businesses " Write to Doing More With Leas!, 105 Stoney Mountain Road.
