By JACKIE STIVER Field Representative Surviving dependents of a deceased worker should apply for Social Security benefits as soon as possible following the worker’s death. Applying promptly will allow benefits to start in the shortest possible time. In addition, some benefits cannot be paid more than a month before the application is filed. Social Security benefits can be paid to these survivors: Unmarried children under 18, or under 19 if a full-time high school student Home Artsr€lub dine afareol restaurant Seventeen members and guests of the Home Arts Club met for a luncheon at a restaurant in North Webster. This meeting was a preChristmas party, held before’ some members leave for Florida for the winter. Gifts were exchanged and contests and games were enjoyed by all. The group will meet in November at the home of Pauline Cormany. Donation for Winter Carnival Syracuse-Wawasee Winter Carnival committee recently received a cash contribution from Augsburger’s Super Valu, Syracuse, for activities, support and appreciation for the carnival. Each year the two-day carnival provides sledding, skating, crosscountry skiing, snowmobile events and fireworks for people of all ages. The 1985 Carnival is scheduled for Saturday, and Sunday, Jan. 26-27. US economy closely related to farmers What sort of message would farmers like to give voters in the city during this short time remaining before November election? And why should someone in the city care about what is happening down on the farm? The relationship between the farm economy and the total US and world economies is much closer and more complex than most people realize. Today what happens on Main Street or Wall Street greatly affects the well being of the farmer. And a healthy farm economy provides a boost to the US economic outlook. “We see farmers having less and less control of their own economic situation,” Dr. Kenneth Bader, chief executive officer of the American Soybean Association in a recent speech in St. ' Louis to the Mercantile Bancorporation. “High interest rates have created financial havoc for farmer who are heavily dependent on credit for operating and real estate loans.”

opinion as to its necessity. Medicare will help pay for a second opinion in the same way it pays for other services by doctors. Q. I've just started a small business and will soon have to hire my first employee. What information should 1 get from him? A. Ask to see your new employee’s Social Security card. Record the name and Social Security number exactly as they are shown on the card. Don’t rely merely on the employee’s memory. In addition, always record his or her home address. If your employee has never had a card or has lost it, he or she should get in contact with any Social Security office to apply for one. Q. I'm retired and I've got Medicare. Recently I got a phone call from someone wanting to sell me “Supplemental Medicare” insurance. He said it was government-approved. What does that mean? A. It is common for state insurance commissions or agencies to certify that a policy or company complies with laws or regulations established by the state: Beware, however, of claims that a particular policy is government-sponsored. Neither the federal nor any state government sells or services a policy to supplement Medicare.
