Wawasee whips Bethany, awaits North Wood
By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer Wawasee’s volleyball team ran its record to 11-2 Tuesday, Oct. 9, by whipping Bethany Christian t 15-9, 15-12, in a non-conference clash in Goshen. Wawasee’s senior-laden lineup paced the Warriors in the first game of the match, but Coach Barb Brouwer went to her bench in the finale. In doing so, Bethany Christian raced out to a 11-5 lead, and seemingly had Wawasee on the

TERRY MEADS, SYRACUSE LANGUAGE ARTS teacher, has be hired to fill the basketball coaching vacany on the Wawasee High School staff. Meads is a Grace College graduate and is in his first year of teaching in the Lakeland Corporation. Meanwhile, the basketball program at North Webster is in need of two coaches for the upcoming season. Both the boys’ and girls’ seventh grade teams are without coaches. SEVERAL WAWASEE AND JUNIOR HIGH ATHLETES have written their own chapter in the school’s record books this fall and deserve some special recognition. WHS girls’ swim team members Jeanine Gunn and Pam Foyle have already set new records with part of their season left to go. Gunn, a junior, established a new diving record of 261.10 points in a meet against North Wood. Classmate Foyle set school standards in the 200 freestyle (2:08.87) and the 500 freestyle (5:41.11). Wawasee cross-country runners Mike Ballinger and Sheila Kleinrichert have also set school records with a few meets yet to run- Ballinger lowered the standard for the boys’ 5,000-meter course to 16:12 in a meet at Whitko. Kleinrichert owns the girls’ record of 16:29 for 4,000 meters. The undefeated Lakeland Junior High School cross-country team also set three new records during its season. Jeff Carey set a new record for 3,000 meters with a time of 10:18. Brian Jones established a new 4,000 meter record of 14:06.8. The team of Carey, Jones, Jason Douglas, Cuong Reed and Rod Coy set a new five-man record with a combined time of 53:33. PIGSKIN PREDICTIONS This week’s only area game with any postseason significance is at Nappanee where the North Wood Panthers play host to the Whitko Wildcats. The winner will advance to the playoffs as the Cluster AA-34 representative. The Panthers are currently 2-0 in the cluster and the 'Cats are 1-1. Last week’s results were Concord 14, Warsaw 9; East Noble 10, Wawasee 7; Plymouth 21, North Wood 20; Northridge 10, Fairfield 6; Jim-

Wawasee Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 20 during regular bowling hours. Proceeds from the benefit will be used to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude is actively involved in research on childhood cancer. Local bowlers are now searching for sponors who will back their efforts with a pledge of one penny for each point they score. Sponsors need to register before the bowling takes place. Anyone who is interested in contributing to the cause should contact either Pam Blosser (856-4788) or Suzi Pachynski (457-4131). NOTEWORTHY SCORES AND HAPPENINGS from the past week included some fine split conversions in the Thursday Night Ladies League. Colleen Schwalm picked up the 5-7 split, Effie Kiefer converted the 3-7-10 combination and Kathryn Knisley got the 2-7 split. Betty Swihart rolled a 567 series as part of the Monday Nite Early Birds league on Oct. 8. Her high game was 206.

Whitridge was also nine-of-10 in the serving department and Darlene Justice was six-of-six. “We didn’t play that well, but this was the first time some of our girls saw their gym,” said Brouwer after the victory. “I am pleased that some of the girls played and received some varsity experience.” In the junior varsity match, Wawasee defeated the Braves 15-13, 12-15, 15-3. proved the Warriors’ record to 12-3 for the year. Defeat Rochester “We didn’t play well, but we won anyway,” said Brouwer. “It was an important game for us, because it was a conference match.” Anita Swope keyed the 15-7, 6-15,15-5 victory over the Zebras with 48-of-49 sets and 11 winners. Swope consistently set up her teammates on offense. Christy Speicher was the leading hitter for Wawasee with
Foyle breaks records
By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer Wawasee’s swim team suffered its third straight loss Tuesday, Oct. 9, as the host Plymouth Pilgrims defeated the Warriors 99-73. The defeat drops Wawasee’s record to 6-4. Wawasee earned just four first place spots in the meet with the Pilgrims. The medley relay team of Chris Neff, Danielle Iwankowitsch, Christy Rowe and Pam Foyle won the event with a time of 2:08.7. The only Warriors to win an event were Jeanine Gunn and Foyle. Gunn, of course, captured the diving competition as expected while Foyle was the winner in the 50 and 500 yard fresstyle events. In the 50 freestyle, Foyle was clocked at 27.9 seconds while in the 500 freestyle, she finished with a time of 5:49.3. “I know the girls don’t like losing three straight,” said Caldwell. “I am sure they will put a stop to this noise real soon.” One of the Warrior swimmers trying her hardest to stop the losing ways is Foyle. Against Concord she set two school records, nevertheless, they were not good enough to propel Wawasee past Concord. The Warriors dropped the Northern Lakes Conference swim meet to the visiting Minutewomen 106-66 in the Wawasee pool. Foyle provided Wawasee fans and coaches something to cheer about as she nipped Jennifer Darr’s 1981 school mark in the 200 yard freestyle event. With Caldwell cheering from the sidelines, Foyle finished the event in 2:08.87, eclipsing the old mark of 2:08.88. But one record was not enough

an 18-of-20 performance and 10 kills. Sandy Payne was 15-of-17 and three kills and she was also perfect in serving (12-of-12). Shelly Harris contributed to the offense with eight of her 10 spikes being effective, although only four were winners. Greta Hilker was 11-of-13 in serves. Wawasee, after a day off, will jump back into Northern Lakes Conference action Thursday evening against North Wood. The Panthers were forced to forfeit eight of their games this season, one being a NLC contest.
for the talented junior. She went after her own 500 yard freestyle record which was set last year. In the longer event, Foyle easily bettered her 1983 record time with a 5:41.11 clocking. Her previous record was 5:47.77. Incidentally, Foyles’ school record in the 200 yard frestyle did not net her top honors against the Minutewomen. Concord’s Jill Welter finished ahead of Foyle with a 2:05.8 time. But in the record-breaking 500 yard freestyle performance, Foyle easily won the event. Both Concord swimmers were well behind the Wawasee champ. The only other first place finish for Wawasee came from the diving board. Although it was not Jeanine Gunn’s most impressive performance of the year, the junior still had plenty of points to win. She netted 225.45 points and outdistanced Julie Schmahl for the victory. In the meet, Caldwell witnessed 12 lifetime best times for his girls, despite two of his top swimmers being out with injuries. Christy Rowe, a butterfly specialist and Charlene Fisher, a backstroker, both missed the meet. Central Wins • “We went to a clinic and didn’t have to pay for admission,” said Caldwell after his Warriors were destroyed by top-ranked Elkhart Central 130-42. Foyle was the only Wawasee winner in the meet, winning the 100 yard freestyle in 59.5 seconds. She also finished second in the 200 yard freestyle event. The only other Warrior to gain., a second-place finish was Jeanine Gunn. Ironically, Gunn, who is ranked first in the state in the most recent power ratings was defeated by the second best diver in the state, Central’s Connie Minzey.
