Humanly speaking — Children of divorce
By BETSY STARKES. A.C.S.W. Clinical Social Worker Youth Services Since 1956, the number of children involved in divorce has more than tripled. It is estimated that nearly half of all children born today will spend some portion of their lives before the age of 18 in a single parent household. Most therapists, lawyers, and parents agree that ideally a child should be raised by two loving and compatible parents. They also agree that maintaining a combative marriage is in the best interests of neither parents nor children. Subsequent research has supported the idea that the emotional trauma children suffer in a longterm troubled family leads to more significant emotional problems than the short-term trauma children experience with divorce. There are nevertheless,

special problems which affect the children. A common question separating parents have is, “How will this affect my child?” Children’s reactions to divorce (separation) will be heavily influenced by how the parents handle the separation. Other factors depend on a number of things. Age, quality of early life, amount7nt of predivorce stress, number and depth of relationships with others are all important to the child’s response to the actual parental separation. Children express inner pain and conflict in various ways. Preschool age children, roughly 2*£ to 6 years, are the most fearful of loss of parents. Preschoolers are very aware of their nurturance needs and are extremely fearful of separation from their parents. Divorce crisis is often expressed by the preschoolers through some form of aggression. Tantrums

about going to nursery school or being left with the babysitter are, during the divorce crisis, frequently related to a fear of abandonment. It helps to be tolerant of these fears. Once in a while parents can respond to the child’s fearfulness by allowing vacation from nursery school or by coming home early when the child is with a babysitter. Either being constantly exasperated with the preschooler’s fears or never being apart from him/her only increases the child’s fearfulness. Elementary school age children, from about 6 to 12, are at the height of magical thinking. They believe their thoughts and wishes are the causes of most events. Denial might be expressed by the child “forgetting” about the divorce, or by the child acting as if nothing is or will be changing. Another form of denial, is the “brave little soldier” front in which the child acknowledges the divorce but acts more grown-up and supportive than they really feel. The problem with children’s use of denial is that they do not grieve for their losses, though grieving is an appropriate and healing thing to do when children or adults suffer a loss. The most helpful thing a parent can do with elementary school aged children is a lot of realistic talking about the divorce, along with other forms of reassurance. Parents should assume that the elementary school age child has both many questions and distorted views about the divorce. Regardless of whether the child verbalises guilt about the divorce, the parent should talk with the child about how marital problems did not happen because of anything the child has said or done. Whether or not the child talks or demonstrates feelings of loss, the parents should discuss with them how parents can divorce spouses but not children. Parents cneed to allow teenagers some emotional space, but still be available to them at those times when the teenager needs adult parental help or support. Often divorcing adults are prone, because they are forming their own new identities, to forget the pains of adolescent identity struggles. Os all the developmental phases humans go through, the adolescent period tends to be the most stormy and traumatic in spite of the facade of it being a time of fun-filled freedom. Other behaviors that usually indicate a problem in children are withdrawal and silence, loss of interest in friends, delinquency, bedwitting, refusal toygo to school, loss of appetite, trouble in sleeping, and nightmares. If children exhibit these symptoms consistently parents should seek professional guidance on how to help them resume normal emotional development.
