A IVANA is geared to youth

By JO STURGIS Staff Writer Workmen Are Not Ashamecr (II Timothy 2:15) is the phrase the national program of the AWANA’s is based on. The Wawasee Heights Baptist Church, Syracuse, participates in this program geared to the youth. The AWANA’s meet every Thursday evening at the Wawasee Heights Baptist Church from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This year, the largest group ever - 75 kids — showed up for the first night of AWANA’s, said Rev Norman McVey, pastor at Wawasee Heights Baptist. The 75 kids are divided up into / four sections. First, grades three thru five are split into the Chums for the girls and the Pals for the boys Grades six thru eight are divided into the Guards for the girls and the Pioneers for the boys. Kindergarten thru second grade are taught separately and are called the Sparkies. The purpose of the AWANA’s is found in their pledge First, it is to reach boys and girls with the Gospel of Christ and second, to train the participants to serve Christ Each night of AWANA’s is divided into three sections or time slots Tribe time gives the students a chance to work in their individual books memorizing and reciting passages plus other exer-

cises. Game time is spent competing in games such as bean toss, hopping, running backwards and running with their legs tied together. Council time involves receiving a devotional message from the scriptures. AWANA Olympics are held once a year between the different AWANA clubs in Northern Indiana. The different clubs compete against each other, usually at North Wood and Triton High Schools. The students compete in sectionals, semi-finals and finals. Trophies are awarded to the winning teams. Rev. McVey is one of the AWANA leaders, along with 25 other He said over a half of the students in AWANA are not even members of the church and added the AWANA program gets a lot of cooperation from the schools to bolster its popularity. Rev. McVey sees the greatest benefit of AW’ANA’s in the scriptures the students learn He believes the scriptures are the rule of life. Other benefits of the AWANA program is that it seeks to bring the students into a relationship w’ith the Lord for life, enables them to know how to have fellowship with other kids their own age and instills moral and spiritual values on the students, he said.

A LETTER TO YOU POSTMARKED: "HEAVEN" Write a letter to the leader of the church at Ephesus and tell him this: "I write to inform you of a message from him who walks among the churches and holds their leaders in his right hand. "He says to you: I know how many good things you are doing. I have watched your hard work and your patience; I know you don’t tolerate sin among your members, and you have carefully examined the claims of those who say they are apostles but aren't. You have found out how they lie. You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. "Yet there is one thing wrong; you don't love me as at first! Think about those times of your first love (how different now!) and turn back to me again and work as you did before; or else I will come and remove your candlestick from its place among the churches. "But there is this about you that is good: You hate the deeds of the licentious Nicolaitans, just as I do. "Let this message sink into the ears of anyone who listens to what the Spirit is saying to the churches: To everyone who is victorious I will give fruit from the Tree of Life in the Paradise of God." /Revelation 2:1-7]
