Games aren't why youth should come to church says McCray
Henry McCray, youth pastor at North Webster Church of God, has achieved his goals as youth pastor and has decided it’s time to move on. McCray has been involved with developing the youth program for the past 54 years at the North Webster Church of God and will be moving to the Tulsa, Okla., area along with his wife, Terry, and their three children, Dan, 11; Mike, 10 and Erin. five. McCray’s accomplishments are many. For example, this past weekend the church organized a special seminar for youth and ” their parents. The seminar was held Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7:30 a m. to 7:30 p.m. The day was spent viewing video cassette tapes done by renown youth minister, Dawson McAllister, Pastor McCray leading the teenagers in an indepth study on getting along with parents, Mrs. McCray leading the parents in discovering some practical ways to really love your teenager and volleyball and personal times. The youth ministry program at the North Webster Church of God is divided into a junior high and a senior high program The junior high group meets regularly on Wednesday nights and Sundays in Sunday School and sometimes through the week

for special activities. A special eighth grade group meets in small groups to learn how to read and interpret the Bible and memorize scriptures and personal devotions. The eighth grade group was started four years ago by Pastor McCray. The senior high group does not spend as much time with social activities such as roller skiing and parties. Pastor McCray said he uses Wawasee High School as a ministry because they have such a full schedule of activities. He refutes the idea of what he terms “rabbit-hole Christians. ’’ He believes Christians have to be out in the public where ministry is needed. For this reason. McCray said the senior high group may only meet once every three months besides on Sundays. This past summer, three of the senior high girls went to Bagoda. South America, to a youth camp in conjunction with Campus Life. Three others worked as youth camp counselors in Akron. In the high school. McCraystarted a program call Prayer Warriors. This was started three years ago and involves meeting at the high school two mornings a week and once or twice a week over the noon hour. McCray said these are not teaching meetings but more a support thing for each

other and a-prayer time. He also started a program in the elementary school called the Good News Club. The youth leaders started holding weekly staff meetings and McCray said this made the biggest difference in their youth program. This is because each of the leaders got to know each other so well and could act as a support group for each other. Each leader found his own spiritual gift and concentrate on that area when teaching the youth. One of the improvements in the youth program was in the whole philosophy said McCray. Before, the church was just a holding tank for the youth. The church just tried to keep the youth in church until they matured. We planned all sorts of parties and took them skating. But, just a bunch of games isn’t why you should come to church. Now our program shows these youth why they should attend church and as a result we have a very mature group of Christians. Looking ahead, the North Webster Church of God is planning on sending 15 youth to the Youth Congress in Washington, D C., next summer. An estimated 25,000 students are expected to attend this conference, sponsored by the Campus Life and Campus

Crusade For Life organizations. Pastor McCray said it was a hard decision to leave, but Christ keeps confirming his decision and he can leave because he. knows the youth program will continue. His goal when he started was to equip leaders who could continue on in his absence and he said that goal has been met. One of the those people equipped to take over as a youth leader is Mike McCoy. McCoy was a member of the youth program at North Webster and has now come back to lead other youth. He will lead the eighth grade growth group and the discipleship growth groups at the high school
GOD MIXED THE AUTUMN PALETTE WITH THE COLORS OF FIRE mH ith the greenness of summer departing the view And the nights turning suddenly cold, Soon the leaves will display a magnificent hue In the brilliance of scarlet and gold. Then ignited by frost, they will fade into brown As a sign of their final hurrah; When propelled by the wind, ever spiraling down They comply with the natural law. level. He also plans to get involved with youth at the junior high level. Pastor McCray said, “the most rewarding part of being a youth minister is seeing the youth over the last five years grow and mature and walk with Christ. He added, “It’s really gratifying when they come back and teach other youth in the program.’’ McCray finished the interview by saying he thought the youth of today are a lot sharper than when he was a youth because they have so much more to deal with. “They (the youth) have developed to the demands'and are rising up to the challenges they face."
