Netters set sights on NLC tourney
Wawasee’s hard luck in Nor-, thern Lakes Conference tennis action continued this week as the Warriors fell to Bremen 5-0 on Monday, Sept. 17. The Warriors are now 1-12 overall and 0-6 in the NLC heading into tonight’s home match with North Wood. The Wawasee number one doubles combination of Lachlan McLean and Bill Hutchinson won one set in their match, but it was the lone set won by the Warriors on the afternoon. The duo dropped their match by the score of 1-6, 7-*5, 6-7 (5-7). “I thought we had a shot at winning several of the positions,” Siler said. "Mark McLean played well and our number one doubles team had a good match. But overall we could have played better.” Following tonight’s home match, the Warriors will prepare for this weekend’s NLC tournament at Plymouth Singles play will begin on Friday night and doubles will start on Saturday morning Although Wawasee has yet to win a conference match this year. Siler thinks his team has a shot at improving on last year's sixth-place tourney finish "We have a shot at finishing fifth, but I think we’ll have to play well to get that high," he noted. "Winning first round matches is , going to be the key to where we finish." . Swimmers drown opponents
By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer The Wawasee girls’ swim team improved its record to 4-1 on the season with a pair of easy ‘victories the past week. The Warriors’ drowned Tippecanoe Valley, 132-31, Monday, Sept. 17, and then came back the following evening to bury Bremen 115-57 “For being a low-pressure meet, I was pleased with our performance,” said Wawasee head coach Tim Caldwell in reference to the Bremen meet. “We created some interesting races, but it wasn't a tough meet.” Wawasee captured nine of the 11 first place spots in the meet. Only in the 100-yard backstroke and freestyle relay did a Bremen Lion place higher than a Wawasee swimmer. Pam Foyle, once again, paced the winning effort by capturing two first place spots. Foyle was declared the winner in the 50 and 500-yard freestyle events. Kris Neff also faired well at the meet as she was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team. She also captured the individual medley and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke. Perhaps the moment that most pleased Caldwell was the performance of Steph Berkey. The underclassman won the 100-yard

Stacey Boles earned two second place spots in the meet. Valley Drowns Against Valley, Wawasee had everything its way throughout the meet. Eleven first place performances were turned in by the Warriors as Tippecanoe Valley could barely manage three second place finishes. Wawasee’s leader throughout the season, Foyle, captured two top prizes against the Vikings, the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. Kris Neff also turned the trick by winning the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle. “It was almost embarrassing for us to beat them like we did,” confessed Caldwell. “But there was nothing that I could do. Our girls swim too hard at practice not to let them compete because our opponent is weak.” Caldwell tried to juggle the lineup of events around, hoping to create a tighter meet, but that didn’t even work.
