Concord Minutemen Turnovers were the name of the game last year as the Warriors coughed up the pigskin seven times en route to a 14-0 loss. Wawasee’s last win over Concord was a 48-6 rout in 1976. The Concord defense turned in a fine performance last week against Rochester and coach Myron Dickerson knows that the Warriors will have to display some offensive versatility in order to move the football. We definitely need to throw the ball more in order to relieve the pressure on our running game," he noted. “And if we are able to keep our running game in good shape. | think that we can move the ball " t The Minutemen like to run an option offense As was the case at Goshen. Wawasee’s defense can expect to see a quarterback who is not afraid to run the football. ‘ They use the option a lot like Goshen does,’’ Dickerson said in fact. I expect to see a lot of things like we did at Goshen That means we are going to have to get good lateral pursuit out of our linemen and linebackers. ” H arrior Injuries — Ben Beer suffered a separated shoulder last week and his status is not clear. Spikers end Brouwer's five-year drought

B) MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer F or Wawasee High School head volleyball coach Barb Brouwer, last Thursday s victory over Goshen was a long time coming — five years to be exact The victory marked the first time that a Brouwer-coached Wawasee volleyball team had defeated a Redksin unit And what a relief for the fifthyea r coach "We broke the jinx.” said an elated Brouwer, minutes after the impressive triumph over the Redskins "It was evident that the team wanted to xyjn They played as a team, and played pretty well.” In the victory. Wawasde exemplified the true meaning of team play, dominated the entire match and went on to crush Goshen 15-9, 15-8. in what was a crucial Northern Lakes Conference clash for both teams. ' 7 Tuesday Results The Warriors continued to win, and win big Tuesday. Sept 18 Traveling to South Whitley, the Warriors had no problems in routing the the Whitko Wildcats 15-5, 15-3. The victory over the Wildcats improved Wawasee’s overall record to 5-1 The Warriors remain 2-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference Goshen Recap At the outset of the Goshen match, one of Brouwers’ concerns was her team's composure.

Harriers score double win over NLC foes

By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor The Wawasee boys’ crosscountry team downed Bremen and Rochester in an NLC triangular meet at Rochester on Tuesday, Sept 18. The wins raised Wawasee’s record to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Warriors topped the previously undefeated Lions 23-34 and easily downed the Zebras, 15-42 - Wawasee’s Mike Ballinger led the race from start to finish. His winning time of 16:47 was 20 seconds faster than second place finisher Scott Chamberlain of Bremen The top ten was rounded out by Darin Cook (B). in 17:17, Carl Rouch in 17:38, Brian Popenfoose in 17:48, Jeremy Corson in 17:53, Troy Minton in 18:00, Kevin Pugh (R> in 18:09, Matt Shriver (B) in 18:14 and Bob Ulery (R) in 18:15. Steve Hapner was 12th in 18:20. ‘‘Everybody ran well,” said coach Jerry Minton. “At the end of five minutes we had seven guys in the top 10 and after 10 minutes we had four runners within four seconds of each other. I think that sort of blew Bremen away.” Ballinger’s winning time was one second slower than his time at the West Noble Invitational

help the Warriors to a 14-6 win over the Bremen Lions on a rainy night last Friday in Syracuse. The win raised ; Wawasee’s record to 2-2 overall heading into Friday night’s Cluster AAA-20 clash at Concord. The Warriors

especially if Goshen opened the contest with a lead. But a lead at the outset was all that Goshen could handle all evening The visitors dashed out to a qtuck 4-0 advantage by causing defensive problems for Wawasee But the Warriors’ defense pulled together, the offense got on track, and for Wawasee, it was all over except for the shouting. The Warriors caught Goshen at 9-9 and then ran off six straight points to claim the win. Anita Swope keyed the victory as she served for the final points of the contest, while setting the ball for her teammates on offense Shelly Harris and Sandy Payne contributed key spikes, both winners, in the winning spurt Rip Whitko Against Whitko, Brouwer was able to rest her regulars and still come up with a lopsided win. "We played pretty well,” Brouwer said. "But it is tough to get up for a team like Whitko.” Greta Hilker paced the winning effort by serving 12 of 12. Harris, Swope and Michelle Harter all chipped in with a six-of-six serving performance. Swope aLo set 21 of 24 and had nine winners. Speicher finished the evening with five of five spikes and no winners Payne totaled two winners from her 4-5 effort and Lori Galloway hit two winners from her five-of-six effort

last Saturday, but Minton felt he had a better race this time out “This is a tougher course than what we had at West Noble.” Minton said “Mike ran a very good race. ” Rouch and Popenfoose also turned in good times and Minton is optimistic about the team's progress heading into the end of the dual meet schedule. “We are in real good shape at this point,” commented Minton. “Popenfoose has a bit of a foot problem and may have to take it easy for a bit. but Corson and Hapner have been running well. I think we are right where we want to be. ” The team travels to Columbia City on Thursday, Sept. 20, and then defends its crown in the Culver Military Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22. > West Noble Both Wawasee teams turned in fine performances at one of the area’s largest meets, the West Noble Invitational, on Saturday, Sept. 15. Twenty-one teams participated in the boys’ varsity meet and 14 teams ran in the girls' varsity competition. Mike Ballinger, Brian Popenfoose and Carl Rouch finished in the top 20 runners to lead the boys to a fifth place finish overall. Eastside won the meet with 82

are 0-1 in the cluster. Quick Strike The first half was basically a defensive struggle as both teams had trouble sustaining any offensive threats. The Warriors had three drived halted by fumbles and the Lions advanced beyond midfield only once. But the Warriors started the second with a bang, striking for a touchdown on the opening kickoff. Senior Jeff Moore fielded the kick at his own 21, cut up the middle and then broke to the outside and raced 79 yards for the score. “We worked hard on our kick returns in practice,” noted Wawasee coach Myron Dickerson. “In fact, our practice session on Wednesday night ended with Moore returning a kickoff for a touchdown." Wawasee’s lead didn’t last too long, however, as the Lions put together a seven-play, 64-yard drive late in the third period to knot the score at 6-6. The Warriors appeared to have Bremen in trouble with a third down and seven at their own 39. but Ken Phillips scrambled and hit Dan Coblentz for a 22-yard gain to keep the drive alive. Four plays later, tight end Tim Feldman hauled in another Phillips' pass, this one from 25 yards out. for the tying touchdown with :05 left in the period Cortland Lynch’s extra point attempt was wide to the left. In see-saw fashion, the Warriors came right back and strung together their best drive of the

THROUGH THE DEFENSE — Wawasee’s Christy Speicher slams a spike through the attempted block of Goshen’s Jan Kolb (15) and Kim Kurtz (21) in a match at Wawasee on Thursday. Sept. 13. Speicher had 14 spikes and four kills as the Lady Warriors beat Goshen

points, followed by Warsaw (105), DeKalb (107), East Noble (119) and Wawasee (131). In placing 11th, Ballinger ran a season-best time of 16:46 for the 5,000-meter course Brian Popenfoose was only four seconds behind Ballinger in 14th place. Rouch crossed the finish line six seconds behind Popenfoose, good enough for the number 18 spot. The Warriors’ fourth and fifth runners, Troy Minton and Jeremy Corson, finished in 17:33 and 17:44 respectively. Both runners established season bests with their times. Record Falls Meanwhile, the girls are running a longer distance in meets this year — 4,000 meters. And the two members of the Wawasee team are battling to own the school record over that distance. Senior Sheila KJeinrichert set the record at 17:09 in a dual meet with Warsaw on September 4. But that mark fell on Saturday as junior Becca Stiver oovered the West Noble course in 16:55. She finished in 12th place overall. Led by Stiver’s fine effort, the Lady Warriors managed to secure the fifth spot in a field of 15 teams. Columbia City won the team title with 39 points, followed by Carroll (87), Homestead (111), Warsaw (114) and Wawasee (151).

night on the ensuing possession. Starting at their own 35, the Warriors marched 65 yards in 15 plays for what proved to be the winning score. Dickerson elected to keep the ball on the ground for most of the drive as Ron Gerber and Steve Yoder were succesful in grinding out yardage in three and fiveyard chunks. They each carried the ball four times on the drive. Yoder netting 12 yards and Gerber gaining 15. Quarterback Brad Traviolia kept the Warriors' drive alive with an 11-yard scramble on a fourth and 10 situation at the Bremen 26. Two plays later, he fired a 13-yard strike to Lance Lantz and the Warriors were on top 12-6. Traviolia then hit Kevin Tracey for the two-point conversion. The Lions failed to mount any offense after the second Wawasee touchdown. As was the case for most of the night, the Warriors were able to get good penetration and pressure Phillips as he set up in the backfield. “Before the game, we charged our defensive linemen with the responsibility of getting more involved in the game," Dickerson said. “We felt that we had to get good penetration in order to help out our secondary. I thought our pass rush was what did it for us.” The defensive line rush frustrated Phillips continually in the first half. One of the conference’s top passers, he failed to complete a pass in the first half and finsihed the night 7-19 for 95 yards.

Sheila Kleinrichert was the second Wawasee runner to finish. She also lowered her season's best time to 17:01 and finished 14th overall. Following Kleinrichert were Amy Clouse. 33rd in 17:41, Mindy Wakeland, 44th in 18:13 and Marcie Coy. 18:45. The overall girls winner was Central Noble’s Lori Leatherman who covered the course in record time 14:45.

“We had hoped to open on Wawasee,” said Bremen grfach Don Bunge. “But Phillips was throwing the ball too soon and we weren’t getting any kind of blocking. We just broke down.” Sophomore tackle Scott McDowell had perhaps the finest game of his career to lead the defensive performance. He was credited with four solo tackles and six assists in addition to three important quarterback sacks. “Scott had some big plays us tonight,” Dickerson said. "He made some big tackles behind the line of scrimmage in important situations.” But the defensive effort was far from limited to McDowell. Todd Yeager contributed one solo and 11 assists. Brad Mitchell had three solos and 11 assists and Brad Traviolia chipped in with five solos and two assists. Rick Peterson had a fumble recovery and Yeager was credited with causing a fumble. Offensively, the Warriors compiled 200 yards, 101 of which came in the air. Traviolia was 4-5 in the game with several long gainers accounting for his high yardage total. “I thought it was great passing weather,” Dickerson said. “We felt prepared for their defenses and I think that our receivers ran good routes." Traviolia's longest completion of the evening came on a 52-yard toss to sophomore tight end Ben Beer late in the first quarter However, Beer was hit hard on the play, separating his shoulder and fumbling the ball.
