THE NOTRE DAME STUDENT NEWSPAPER, the “Observer.” recently ran a series of articles on the state of recruiting in big time college sports. In the articles, Notre Dame head football coach Gerry Faust, head basketball coach Digger Phelps and athletic director Gene Corrigan all noted that the world of NCAA sports has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. As Phelps noted in one interview, major college sports are big business. Today’s major college football and basketball players are. in some ways, just as professional as their counterparts in the NFL or NBA. Yet they are still referred to as amateurs —a status that benefits universities more than athletes. v NCAA rule changes in 1973 allowed universims to award athletic scholarships on a oneyea r basis. These scholarships are renewed on the basis of athletic performance. Thus, a college football player may well find that his scholarship has not been renewed because he had a bad season. In that regard, he is no different from a professional who finds himself without a team when the statistics lose their glitter. That creates a situation in which athletes at many of the NCAA Division I schools are no more than workers under contract with a university. Yet, unlike professionals they are not recognized as employees and have no bargaining power. They can be ‘Tired” (removed from their scholarship) if coaches see fit, but they have no right to bargain for compensation should they be injured on the job. So-called amateurism is really a convenient way for colleges and universities to get away with hiring players to generate revenue without giving them the rights that other workers enjoy. Athletes have become pawns in the battle for NCAA athletic prominence, and only a few of the lucky ones are able to reap the beneifts by making it to the professional ranks. If the NCAA is going to operate sports on a big-time level, it should treat athletes accordingly. The NCAA needs to come to terms with the state of major college sports. Continuing to operate under the guise of amateurism only hurts the athletes in the long run. PIGSKIN PREDICTIONS The North Wood Panthers are putting on an impressive offensive display thus far into the 1984 season.
