Humanly speaking — v . ’ • Childhood fears, part of growing up
By DAVID L. ROGERS Coordinator of Consultation Education — Bowen Center Children can be frightened of a number of different things — dark stairways, cats or dogs, snakes, ghosts, loud noises, strangers, death. Most fears are a normal part of growing up — anxiety about the unknown and fear of his/her own vulnerability or of being alone, separated from the security of mother or father is not unusual. A child feels safe testing his/her excitement, trying new things when knowing parents are there to protect him/her. The child may feel O.K. being held by a sti anger as long as parents are close by, but feels fearful if parents are not in sight. Part of the problem is not trusting self to know how to respond to the unfamiliar person. Fears that persist or continue deep and strong may come from worry, anger or heavy insecurity. Persistent fear of dying, of strangers, of playing rough games, of illness, or of being left alone should be studied seriously. Nervous mannerisms like nail biting may result. Later deep fears may cause shyness, withdrawal or sudden aggressive acts. What Causes Fear Fear is caused by experiences one can’t understand and which appear to threaten. Unfamiliar circumstances, illness involving pain, accidents or a loss of some kind cause Overanxious or protective parents give models that encourage fearful attitudes. Focusing on dangers and threats communicates the parents’ lack of confidence in the child’s ability to cope and encourages feelings of inadequacy The failure of an indifferent parent or teacher to provide significant guidance for a child's development hurt his/her confidence in self. The child may be told he/she is too young to paint a chair or to bake biscuits or to pick out clothes to wear. Withdrawal may result. To avoid making a mistake the child may do as little as possible - sitting alone or staring at T.V. Sometimes fear may be demonstrated in the opposite way by hitting other children, by Good news Almost a million college graduates are now entering the job market, and for many of them the future is probably not what they once thought it would be, but it won’t necessarily be bad. breaking things or by being cruel to animals. A powerful cause of fear and anxiety is family tension. Some family conflict is expected, but if bickering and arguing occur often even a young child senses trouble and is frightened by what’s happening between people who mean the most to him/her. A new fear for children and youth is nuclear war. “Psychology Today” (April 1984) reports on a study by child psychiatrists John Mack and William Beardslee in which they reported children as young as 5 or 6 believe that nuclear war is like-
