Spikers tip LaSalle in opening match
By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor They looked a little shaky at times, but the Wawasee Lady Warrior volleyballers got rolling in the second game to record their first win of the'season on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Wawasee. Coach Barb Brouwer’s squad dropped the opening contest to South Bend LaSalle 15-8 and then rallied to take the final two games by scores of 15-7 and 15-11. Wawasee is now 1-0 for the year and travels to Plymouth on Thursday, Sept. 6, for an important conference match.' The Lady Warriors nearly let the match slip out of their hands in the second game. two kill spikes to put Wawasee ahead by two and added a beautiful dink to raise the team’s lead to three, points. Christy Speicher followed with a service winner and Wawasee went on to post a 15-7 win. The third game was close all the way. LaSalle moved out to early leads of 6-3, 7-4 and 8-6 before the Lady Warriors could put thejr offense together. Speicher, perhaps the team's most versatile hitter, kept Wawasee close with two kill spikes and two dinks in the middle of the contest. Wawasee evened the score at 8-8 on a Harris kill and evened it again at 9-9 on a Lori Galloway block. Speicher added a well-placed dink for a winner to put Wawasee ahead for good at 12-11. Junior Michelle Harter then finished off the game with three serves, including a service winner for the final point.
Speicher and senior setter Anita Swope lead the Wawasee attack. Speicher completed 24 of 28 spikes with 12 kills and Swope was perfect on 69 of 70 sets. Harris nailed 13 of 14 spikes with 12 kills.* Harter was the leading server, scoring 10 points on the night. Sandy Payne and Greta Hilker lead in passing. Golfers lose at Warsaw
All good things must come to an end. For Wawasee's girls golf team, its 15-match winning streak was halted by a group of Warsaw Tigers Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Maxwelton. with covering dinks and off-speed hits. “We weren’t really out of position,” Brouwer said. “They just didn’t hit the ball hard. We are going to have to work at being on our toes.” “Some of the kids seemed a bit tentative out there,” Brouwer added in reference to a few shots which nobody covered. “We just have to learn to go after all of the opponents’ shots.”
Hostetter with a 47 and Heidi Musser chipped in with a 56. Other girls finishing for the Warriors were Jennifer Jorczak, 62, and Kriss Gregory, 69. Warsaw was paced by Jennifer Deeter and Brenda Kachlick, both shooting a 48 for the day. Christy Smith and Jennifer Brown added a 56 score to assist in the upset victory.

Tigers sweep Warrior harriers
The Warsaw Tigers pounced on the Wawasee boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams and scored a double victory in Northern Lakes Conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Warsaw. The Tigers won the girls’ meet by a score of 22-34 and the boys’ meet by a 20-41 count. The Wawasee girls are now 0-1 and the boys dropped to 1-1. “Warsaw is a tough team because they have so many runners back from last year,” noted Wawasee coach Jerry Minton. “Their kids ran a good race and we just aren’t quite in shape yet.” The overall winner in the boys’ race was Warsaw’s Jerry Rhodes in a time of 16:28. That time established a new course record. Following him were Wheiler (War) in 16:29, Ballinger (Waw) 17:04, Lewis (War) 17:21, Roucti (Waw) 17:26, Fairfield (War) 17:30, Smith (War) 17:35, Henn (War) 17:42, Fuller (War) 17:44 and Minton (Waw) 17:48. The girls’ winner was Warsaw’s Groves who covered the 4,000-meter course in 16:51. Since this is the first time that girls have run that distance, her time counted as a new course and school record.
