LOUISA'S letter (’AJ
Dear Louisa, We moved to this town a year ago and I have been invited to join a bridge club and a luncheon club each of which meets once a week. I accepted and enjoy the companionship of these women very much. As my husband is not home for lunch I get a babysitter on those two days. My sister-in-law has made several ugly remarks about my wasting my time instead of attending to my house and family but my husband doesn’t feel that way. He thinks that my contact with these women has helped his business. In fact, we have ben invited to some of their homes in the evening and he has been able to meet ad get to know business men whom he would not have known if I hadn’t been a friend of their wives. But I do resent my sister-in-law’s remarks. J.B.—Texas

Answer: No woman should be expected to spend every minute of her time in the home with the family. Such makes for a dull companion for the husband who is out in the world meeting new people and hearing and discussing new ideas. You husband sounds to me as a very intelligent man and if I were you I would not let anyone else’s remarks worry me at all. Men who think the wife should stay home all of the time should have lived in the Victorian age but as laws and customs have changed since then as far as women are concerned, it would be well for them to wake up before they find their homes falling apart. Card games which are being played for recreation and not for high stakes are good ways to relieve tension just as. golfing, swimming or another form of recreation may be.
