"CRUZIN AROUND 'CUSE"
(Continued from page 4) that took out a quarter of the uptown business block for a second time. Burned out were: The Pickwick Inn, owned by Tony Guidone and Gene Thompson, with a loss of $40,000; Budget Investments, Inc., whose lease ran out at midnight, .Dec. 31, for a loss of fixtures and furniture; W. R. Thomas store on the corner, loss of ail stock and fixtures on two floors; Jaycees hall above Pickwick Inn, loss minimal. Saved were the Pickwick Theater, S. & N. Plumbing and Heating Co., and Doc’s Shoe Repair. During the fire the theater marquee read: “THAT’S THE WAY IT IS,” heralding a new Elvis Presley movie then running. The fire almost proved a death knell to the ill-fated Pickwick Block. The gaping hole in the ground where the W. R. Thomas store was located continued through 1971 and 1972, until the new* ly-formed Syracuse Development Corp, rounded up enough interest and money to rebuild the block in its present form. (Note: The Thornburg Drug Co. was fortunate in missing both the 1946 and 1971 fires. The drug firm moved into the corner room when the block was rebuilt in 1947, then moved to their new Wawasee Village location in early 1964, according to the January 25,1984, account in The Mail-Jour-nal at the time the business was sold by Ralph W. Thornburg, Charles F. Kroh, and his mother Lucy Kroh to John F. and Gail Kroh.) From a reading of the accounts of past fires in the Pickwick Block, the most recent fire was “a piece of cake,” according to one observer. ■ $ TWENTY-ONE-year-old Gan\ Crafton, son of Jim and Norma Crafton, r 5 Syracuse, has found a new way to pick up some easy money. He sends one-liners to television comedienne Joan Rivers, who has become a somewhat regular substitute for Johnny Carson on late night television. Gary said Joan has accepted seven of the one-liners (at $lO each) of the 42 he sent out in early April, and that last week he sent her 22 more. “They just pop into my head,” says Gary, who seems to view his means of making some easy cash as a snap. —o—“WAS MY face red?” said Carolann Gibbs, clerk at Thornburg Drug Co. when fellow employees pulled a surprise on her for her 31st birthday.

When they called her into the large back store room, she thought the fact that her birthday was that day (last Wednesday), perhaps — just perhaps — they had a small surprise in store for her. Well, it was a surprise all right. It was a male stripper from Fort Wayne. Her face was red, that’s for sure, confided employees who wish to remain anonymous. What got Carolann is that the crowd thinned out dangerously toward the end of the surprise visitor’s act. —o— YOU KNEW a dignitary was in town when you saw the big seven-passenger Cadillac Fleetwood parked uptown in Syracuse. It turned out it belonged to be Dave Coppes of Scottsdale, Arizona, and he was driving the 1973 Cadillac that belonged to his late father Claude Coppes. Besides having a large car, Dave sports an Indiana license plate that reads ARIZ 1. Riding this to and from his Scottsdale real estate office and around the city causes many heads to turn, he confides. Dave sold the family home in Pickwick Park (Kale Island) some years ago, and usually he and Alicia rent a place for a month or so during the summer, when they return to visit old friends in the area. —o— ONE YOU probably won’t believe: Area beauty parlors are getting requests for “Jerry Bobs,” following the hair style of Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro, Democratic candidate for vice president of the United States. —O'UNITED TELEPHONE Co. customer service manager G. E. Rumple sent a big “Thank You for a Job Well Done” to Syracuse and area firemen, following the Pickwick Block fire. He wrote them: “After a visit to the fire site, I found our local and toll cable undamaged, even though they were only 24 inches from what was once a wall. “Thanks to the efforts and expertise of the fire department the town of Syracuse did not lose local or toll telephone service. Which all could have been involved had our cables been damaged. Not to mention the man hours and expense of restoring the telephone service.”

if VI VI hV / TALKING AGRICULTURE — Republican Congressman John Hiler and his wife. Catherine, were at the Jerry Grady farm, Syracuse, on Saturday to hear the concerns of local farmers. The visit also served as a fund-raiser for the Hiler campaign. “I’m getting an earful,” Hiler said during the visit. “The bottom line is that farmers aren’t making enough money. There is a lot of concern about credit, interest rates and our foreign sales.” Hiler also noted that agriculture is likely to be the topic of considerable attention in the upcoming presidential campaign. “I can’t speak for the Democrats, but you will see President Reagan spending more and more time in the Midwestern states speaking with those who are involved in agri-business,” he noted. Approximately 300 people attended the event. (Photo by Tom Charles)

Company. The increased charges resulted from a wholesale electric rate increase petition I & M filed August 9 with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The rates as requested would become effective October 7. NIPSCO said it will intervene, probably with others, in the case. As result of the proposed adjustment, a NIPSCO residential customer using 500 kilowatthours of electricity per month would pay about 43 cents per month more for this service after October 7 if the adjustment is approved by the Public Service Commission.
