AUG. 28.1074 The tax rate for the town of Syracuse, approved Monday night by the town board at a public hearing at which only two taxpayers turned out, will be $2.46 per SIOO of assessed valuation. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Cripe.and Mary Ann of Melbourne, Fla.,left Monday to return to their home following a three-week stay in Syracuse at the home of her mother, Mrs. Earl Treadway, and other relatives. A family dinner was held August 7 at the home of Mrs. Frances Timmer of Goshen, celebrating the 60th wedding anniversary of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merl Laughlin of Syracuse. The honored couple was three other children, Mrs. Robert Wiles and Dewey and Merl Laughlin, all of Syracuse, six grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. The Dale Shocks of Cliff., N.M., have returned to their home there following a vacation at Syracuse. Mr. Shock is a 1927 graduate of Syracuse high school and fanner Syracuse resident. Merl Smith was named to the Turkey Creek advisory board last Wednesday night by board members Virgil Bobeck and Jack Ridings to fill the vacancy left by James Fry when he was appointed to the Lakeland school board. 20 YEARS AGO, AUG. 27,1964 The first full day of school in the Lakeland Community School corporation will be Thursday, Sept. 10, with registration to be on Wednesday morning, Sept. 9. Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Schneider and family of Davenport., lowa, who have been visiting the J. E. Kern, Sr.’s, for the past week are spending a few days with Mrs. Schneider’s sister and family, the W. W. Baughers, at Highland Park, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. William E. Luegge and sons, and Mrs. H. D. McClintic of Kalamazoo, Mich., spent Sunday here. Carolyn Joy Luegge accompanied them home after spending the week with Mrs. Lydia Deardorff and Mrs. B. J. Julier.
