'The Diary of Anne Frank' closes 1984 playhouse season
By BILL SPURGEON Guest Writer Not the type of upbeat production that might normally be scheduled to close a season of summer theatre, “The Diary of Anne Frank” nonetheless succeeded in that position last week at Enchanted Hills Playhouse east of Lake Wawasee. The success of the show, which had a one-week run at the bam theatre, can be laid to the talented acting ability of Grace Aiello, a recent Wayne State University graduate from the Detroit area, and the artful direction of EHP director Jeffrey Koep of Indiana University’s South Bend theatre faculty. Miss Aiello played Anne Frank, a girl in her early teens, with a skillful mixture of irreverence and aplomb, and Koep’s direction kept the play, which carries a message of hope that we know cannot be fulfilled, moving at such a pace that the lives of the people portrayed on stage were entwined inextricably with those of the audience members. The play is based on the diary kept by a young Jewish girl during her family’s confinement for nearly three years, in an Amsterdam loft. The Franks - Anne, her mother, father and sister - and the Van Daans - mother, father, son — are there voluntarily, because they feel certain that to try to escape the Netherlands, occupied by the Nazis, would result in death. The Franks and the Van Daans are joined by another Jewish man, a beleaguered dentist named Dussel, and Darryl Maximilian Robinson, in this role, gave a performance overshadowed only slightly by the manner in which Miss Aiello carried the title part. Competent performances were also put in by Gerald Armstrong 11, as the man least able of the loft residents to cope with his confinement and help his spouse cope with hers w and Stephan Monroe as Anne’s father, a part he plays with the dignity it requires. Others in the cast were Nancy Leigh Scoggins, Faith A. Linn, Mark Korres, Elizabeth Lee Taylor, Elena Ferrante and D. F. Crabtree; all did thoroughly professional jobs. The set put together for “The

Diary of Anne Frank” was an imaginative one that conveyed well the confinement of the eight people and the hope that they would eventually find freedom under the liberating armies of the Allies. “The Diary of Anne Frank” brought to a close what surely must be the most ambitious season ever at Enchanted Hills Playhouse: five big-billing musicals in a row, plus a challenging drama. Although the season had a few rough spots (it’s extremely hard for a resident company to work at such a pace for a full summer), the result was a season of good theatrical entertainment, well-staged, well-directed, and well-acted. It will be interesting to see what the summer of 1985 has in store. The standard for quality has been set and maintained in the last few years under producing director Jill Stover and artistic director Koep, and next year will likely be a bellringer, too.
