Milford Deputy Rich Schneiders was traveling south on SR 15 when the collision with Chris Newhouse, Peru, occurred. According to the police report, the van driven by Newhouse was turning north from SR 15 onto CR 400 North when Schneiders collided with Newhouse. Damage to the Newhouse van was estimated between 11,000-82,500 and between $5,000-110,000 to the Milford Police car. Schneiders bumped his knee in the accident and Gretchen Newhouse, 11, a passenger in the van, bumped her head. Study says spinal cord injuries could be reduced

Diving accidents cause some 500 spinal cord injuries a year, principally in lakes and streams rather than man-made pools, and can be reduced by diver training. The overwhelming majority of swimming pool diving injuries occur in the shallow water and their vicitms are largely males between the ages of 13 and 23. These are the key findings of an 8-year study conducted by Arthur D. Little, Inc., for the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF). With pools and other recreational areas opening for the summer, the study has led this nonprofit group to initiate a major public diving . education campaign.

According to the Arthur D. Little study, all water diving accidents account for one out of eight serious spinal cord injuries in the U.S. each year. Os the estimated 500 serious divingrelated injuries, about 250 result in quadriplegia, or paralysis below the neck. Some 75 percent of these occur in streams, lakes and other natural aquatic environments, the study reported. More than half of the spinal injuries resulting from diving, and from all causes, involve persons between 15 and 25 years of age, the study said. Males suffer 85 percent of the injuries, six times as many as females. Divers between the ages of 13 and 23 are 100 times more likely to suffer spinal cord injuries than are children under the age of 13. The study also estimated that 95 percent of diving-related injuries occur in six feet of water or less, and three of four such injuries occur in less than four feet of water.

Wed., Augustß, 1984 - THE MAIL-JOURNAL

While the study looked carefully at pool design and diving bnoards as possible factors in diving accidents in man-made pools, it determined that requiring deeper pools would do little to solve the problem. Among the diving tips developed by NSPF as a result of its research are the following: if you dive down, steer up immediately with head and hands up; keep hands tipped up, head back and the back arched when diving; keep hands in front of the head; plan your dive path into the water before you dive; don’t dive into unknown waters and don’t do back dives or running dives.

THINK AHEAD — Divers should think ahead when they dive. They must be ready to steer up. As a diver enters the water, arms must be extended over the head, hands flat and aiming up. Hold the head up and arch the back.
