Church’s “Sheaves for Christ” youth organization. Rev. David Hudson, pastor at the Syracuse United Pentecostal Church, is the state youth president. Two teams participated in the event. One team started in South Bend and the other team started in Jeffersonville. Both teams met in Fortville, Ind. The marathon began Thursday morning, Aug. 2, and the final two runners finished at 6:40 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3. A rally was held when the last two runners finished tjie marathon. Summer camps are held in Fortville all summer and this race coordinated with the ending of the final camp. A total of 175 to 200 runners participated in the event. To run, each runner had to raise SIOO to run one mile. The runners carried a lighted torch as they ran and each runner received a replica of a torch to keep as a memento. The youngest runner was seven-year-old Nathaniel Binion of Walkerton, and the oldest runner was 72-year-old Clarence Jackson of Richmond. David Hudson and his son Nathaniel and his assistant pastor, Mark Abernathy, ran from the local Syracuse church. Mark Abernathy also ran one mile for Greg Smith, who is the section II state youth director from Hartford City. Smith suffers from a brain tumor, so could not participate in the marathon. Ten people sponsored Abernathy for SIOO each making Abernathy’s run for Greg Smith worth SI,OOO. Stan Conkle of the Warsaw United Pentecostal Church raised the highest amount for a one mile run. He raised $1,060. Rev. Floyd Henson of the Warsaw Church raised $825. The total amount raised from the church was over $3,200. The entire project raised over $20,000. Rev. Hudson said, “On a small scale, it was almost like the passing of the Olympic torch.” Rev. Hudson tried to coordinate the marathon with the Olympics and decorated the tabernacle with flags and a red, white and blue theme. During the final ceremonies on Friday night, all the runners formed a double line with their torches held together, giving the last two runners a “bridge” to run under. A 14 foot image of Indiana was lit with the two blazing torches, also. Rev. Hudson called it “Blazing the State of Indiana." A choir director wrote a song entitled, “Keepers of the Flame,” which was sung as the State of Indiana was being lit. Rev. Hudson estimated 3,000 people attended the rally and said

the whole event was “... dynamic to say the least.” Baldwins write about airplane Another letter was recently received from Chuck and Debby Baldwin, missionaries in West Africa. The Baldwins are formerly from the local area. Their letter said the following: “There was that unwanted morning when Chuck would fly Pastor Bambo across the border to catch the commercial Air Senegal flight out to the port city of Dakar. Bambo was in need of some extensive heart testing which could not be done in Mali. Even though his family knew this was going to be a two-week trip to the doctor in Dakar, still, it was as though they would never again see him. Then there was the special day when the airplane was to bring Pastor Bambo back from Dakar. You never saw any happier children than Bambo’s seven. The oldest boy, Ibrahima, rode his bike out to the airstrip to make sure his dad was on board when the plane touched down. Yes, Bambo was on board. How we thank the Lord for the small plane. We have watched it used in some very special ways the past few weeks. I doubt if Pastor Bambo would have had the strength to travel over these horrible roads for medical help. His heart attack earlier this year had left him much too weak. But with our plane, he came and went, his condition was diagnosed and there is hope. Just this week, a tragic accident took the life of our precious pastor, Daniel Keita. Because of the plane, his family was brought together almost immediately. There was time to prepare and bury the body as a family yet that night. A difficult six-hour walk to Kenieba was turned into ten minutes for the sorrowing family. The Lord is so good in blessing us with our Cessna 180. For the sake of His glory we work and minister here through the Aviation Program. Lives are helped, saved, touched. We thank each of you for your prayers and financial support, for caring about the needs of our Malian family here. Do remember to continue praying for flight safety during these months of thunderstorms. Flights such as these must be subsidized. Your faithful contributions, designated to the “Airplane Ministry” make them possible. Serving the Lord in Mali, Chuck and Debby Baldwin

EVEN FAMILIES WITH DIVERGENT LIVES CAN UNITE IN FAITH*]
s a result of their busy lifestyles, modern families are able to enjoy very little togetherness. What with school and related activities, jobs, recreation, committee meetings, etc., family members seldom even sit down to a meal at the same time. Os course, some of the reasons for this can’t be helped; for example, Dad’s work may force him to travel a great deal. Also, we must commend such things as volunteer work for a worthy cause; or sports, music lessons, etc., which could lead to a brilliant career. Nonetheless, families should try to get together whenever possible; certainly by attending their House of Worship. It will provide the inspiration to solve family as well as individual problems and reinforce that eternal bulwark of our civilization, the family circle. Thus, with the help of faith it may bend and stretch a little, but it will never break.
