Syracuse League honors coach Marilyn finlinson, mother of a Syracuse Kiwanis Youth League team member, composed the following poem: Our Coach We’re glad you were our coach this year, we think you’re really great. We saw that smile you tried to hide each time we crossed home plate! You helped us with our batting, our pitching and our bunting. Even though you could have been out fishing or out hunting. Our practices two times a week took you from your work. We’re sorry if more than once, we acted like a jerk. We started off the season with bats a little slow. But after you had worked with us, we won four in a row! The tournament is coming up. we’d really like to win. And if we do, it’s cause of you and the shape you got us in. You went to several meetings, the Moms made many calls. And, yes, you had to cart around all those bats and balls. As coaches go, we all know, Rick Baker is a winner. So we chipped in to buy for him a real nice prime rib dinner. We’re glad that there are Dads like you and Tom and Larry too. And so, from your Kiwanis team, our hats are off to you!

Rain improves com and soybeans Last week’s rains resulted in a sharp improvement in the condition of corn and soybeans. The com condition is now rated four percent poor, 26 percent fair, 63 percent good, and seven percent excellent. Soybeans are rated two percent poor, 26 percent fair, 70 percent good, and two percent excellent. Seventy percent of the com crop has reached the silk stage, which is just about normal for this date. Sixty percent had silked in 1983. About 75 percent of the soybeans have reached the bloom stage. This figure is a little ahead of the 70 percent of a year ago and the five year average. Fifteen percent of the soybeans have started to pod, which is about normal. Cool, wet weather reduces availability of phosphorus and zinc. An actual phosphorus deficiency is quite rare in row crop fields, but not uncommon in pasture and hay fields. There are few reports of zinc deficiency on com early in 1984. Toung farmers run for needy Hoosiers Nearly 300 members of the Indiana Young Farmer’s Association ran 250 miles across the state to raise funds for the Indiana Ronald McDonald House, August 4 through 7. The run began simultaneously in South Bend and Jeffersonville. Runners traveled along US 31, stopping in McDonald’s Restaurants along the way for meals. The two groups met at the intersection of US 31 and

Michigan Avenue in Indianapolis at 10:30 a.m. on the last day of the run. Joining them in the last half mile were Indianapolis Mayor William Hudnut and Bob Book of the Indiana Institute of Agriculture and Nutrition. The Ronald McDonald House, now in its 10th year, is a refuge for families with critically ill children. The Indiana house, opened two years ago in October, services families of children receiving treatment primarily at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. A check was presented to the House manager, Lona Damron, when the runners arrive in Indianapolis. IYFA efforts to reach the $17,500 fundraising goal will continue until August 15. Soil nutrients depends on rain Rainfall, both amount and seasonal distribution, have an influence on nutrient availability. Temperature is closely tied to rainfall, or the lack of it, and consequently, is also related to nutrient availability. Farmer's finish < harvest same as last year Farmers finished combining wheat last week, ending harvest the same as a year ago. One percent usually remains for harvest on this date. Plowing of land intended for next year’s wheat crop is underway with five percent complete. This is the same as last year and the five-year average.
